O king, a mind free from evil is sufficient for purity; embracing friendship and wisdom, go to the holy places purified.
You all, pure in mind and observing bodily vows, having embraced the divine vow, will obtain the fruit as declared.
The Pandavas, together with Krishna, having promised thus, all performed auspicious rites with the sages, both divine and human.
They approached and touched the feet of Lomasha, of Dvaipayana, of Narada, O king, and of the divine sage Parvata.
The heroes, accompanied by Dhaumya and those dwellers of the forest, departed after the month of Margashirsha, in the month of Pushya.
Taking tough bark garments, wearing skins and matted hair, equipped with impenetrable armor, they then proceeded to the holy places.
With servants like Indrasena and others, with fourteen chariots, and cooks and other attendants likewise,
Armed, with swords fastened, quivers and arrows ready, facing east, the Pandava heroes departed, O Janamejaya.
O best of divine sages, I do not regard myself as devoid of qualities; I am afflicted by sorrow as no other king is.
I also do not consider others devoid of qualities, nor those who follow righteousness; Lomasha, who in this world does not prosper for some reason?
O king, you should not grieve in any way, O Partha, if those who delight in unrighteousness prosper by unrighteous means.
When a man prospers through unrighteousness, he sees good things, defeats his rivals, but in the end perishes with all his roots.
Where kings, O best of kings, prosper through righteousness, they overcome all their rivals, and their realm flourishes.
For I have seen, O ruler of the earth, the Daityas and Dānavas growing by unrighteousness, yet in the end they met with destruction.
In the former age of the gods, O mighty one, I saw everything: the gods cherished righteousness, while the Asuras abandoned it.
The gods entered the sacred fords, but the Asuras, O Bhārata, did not; pride born of unrighteousness had already overtaken them.
From pride arose arrogance, from arrogance came anger; from anger, shamelessness, and then their conduct was destroyed.
Those who became shameless, lost their prosperity, were degraded in conduct, and observed vows in vain, soon lost patience, fortune, and their own duty.
Fortune went to the gods, O king, but misfortune befell the Asuras.
When the Daityas and Dānavas were seized by misfortune and their minds struck down by pride, then even Kali entered them.
Those Dānavas, overtaken by misfortune, defeated by Kali, overwhelmed by pride, devoid of acts and awareness, O son of Kunti, were soon destroyed, overcome by arrogance.
Thus the Daityas, deprived of glory, all perished completely, O king, being attached to unrighteousness and possessed by misfortune.
But the gods, being devoted to righteousness, approached the oceans, rivers, and lakes, and also the holy places.
By austerities, sacrifices, gifts, and blessings, O Pāṇḍava, they cast off all sins and attained prosperity.
Thus, both those who gave and those who did not, all the wise went to the holy places, and thereby attained supreme prosperity.
So you also, O king of kings, having bathed in the holy places with your brothers, will regain that fortune; this is the eternal path.
Just as King Nṛga, Śibi, Uśīnara, Bhagīratha, Vasumanas, Gaya, Pūru, and Purūravas did,
Constantly practicing austerity, touching the sacred waters, purified by visiting holy places and by seeing great souls,
They obtained fame, merit, and wealth, O lord of the people; so you too, O king of kings, having gained abundant prosperity,
Just as Ikṣvāku did, along with his sons, kin, and friends, and as did Mucukunda, Māndhātṛ, and King Marutta.
