तत्पुण्यं परमं ब्रह्म तत्तीर्थं त्तपोवनम्। तत्परं परमं देवं भूतानां परमेश्वरम्
That holy place is the supreme Brahman, that sacred ford, that ascetic grove; that highest, supreme god, the supreme lord of beings.
शाश्वतं परमं चैव धातारं परमं पदम्। यं विदित्वान शोचन्ति विद्वांसः शास्त्रदृष्टयः
He is eternal, the supreme, the sustainer, the highest abode; knowing him, the wise, who see through scripture, do not grieve.
तत्र देवर्षयः सिद्धाः सर्वे चैव तपोधनाः। आदिदेवो महायोगी यत्रास्ते मधुसूदनः
There, the divine sages, the perfected beings, and all the ascetics rich in austerity reside, where the primeval god, the great yogi Madhusudana, abides.
पुण्यानामपि तत्पुण्यमत्र ते संशयेस्तु मा। एतानि राजन्पुण्यानि पृथिव्यां पृथिवीपते। कीर्तितानि नरश्रेष्ठ तीर्थान्यायतनानि च
Even among holy places, that is the holiest—let there be no doubt for you in this, O king of the earth; these, O best of men, are the sacred sites and shrines on earth that have been described.
एतानि वसुभिः साध्यैरादित्यैर्मरुदश्विभिः। ऋषिभिर्देवकल्पैश्च सेवितानि महात्मभिः
These have been frequented by the Vasus, Sadhyas, Adityas, Maruts, Ashvins, and by sages equal to the gods, all of great soul.
चरन्नेतानि कौन्तेय सहितो ब्राह्मणर्षभैः। भ्रातृभिश्च महाभागैरुत्कण्ठां विजयिष्यसि
By journeying to these places, O son of Kunti, together with the foremost of Brahmanas and your illustrious brothers, you will overcome your longing.
एवं संभाषमाणे तु धौम्ये कौरवनन्दन। लोमशः स महातेजा ऋषिस्तत्राजगाम ह
While Dhaumya was speaking thus, O joy of the Kurus, the radiant sage Lomasha arrived there.
तं पाण्डवाग्रजो राजा सगणो ब्राह्मणाश्च ते। उपातिष्ठन्महाभागं दिवि शक्रमिवामराः
The eldest Pandava, the king, along with his companions and the Brahmanas, attended upon the illustrious one as the immortals do upon Indra in heaven.
समभ्यर्च्य यथान्यायं धर्मपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः। पप्रच्छागमने हेतुमटने च प्रयोजनम्
Having worshipped him properly, Yudhishthira, the son of Dharma, asked him the reason for his coming and the purpose of his journey.
स पृष्टः पाण्डुपुत्रेण प्रीयमाणो महामनाः। उवाच श्लक्ष्णया वाचा हर्षयन्निव पाण्डवान्
Questioned by the son of Pandu, the great-minded one, pleased, spoke with gentle words, as if gladdening the Pandavas.
संचरन्नस्मि कौन्तेय सर्वांल्लोकान्यदृच्छया। गतः शक्रस्य भवनं तत्रापश्यं सुरेश्वरम्
Roaming all the worlds by chance, O son of Kunti, I reached the abode of Shakra and there beheld the lord of the gods.
तव च भ्रातरं वीरमपश्यं सव्यसाचिनम्। शक्रस्यार्धासनगतं तत्र मे विस्मयो महान्
And I saw your heroic brother, the left-handed archer, seated on half the throne of Shakra; great was my astonishment at that.
आसीत्पुरुषशार्दूल दृष्ट्वा पार्थं तथागतम्। आह मां तत्र देवेशो गच्छ पाण्डुसुतान्प्रति
Seeing Partha arrived there in such a manner, O tiger among men, the lord of the gods said to me, 'Go to the sons of Pandu.'
सोऽहमभ्यागतः क्षिप्रं दिदृक्षस्त्वां सहानुजम्। वचनात्पुरुहूतस्य पार्थस् च महात्मनः
So I have come quickly, desiring to see you and your younger brothers, at the command of Puruhuta and the great-souled Partha.
आख्यास्ये ते प्रियं तात महत्पाण्डवनन्दन। भ्रातृभिः सहितो राजन्कृष्णया चैव तच्छृणु
I shall tell you something dear, O child, O great joy of the Pandavas; listen, O king, together with your brothers and Krishna.
यत्त्वयोक्तो महाबाहुरस्त्रार्थं भरतर्षभ। तदस्त्रमाप्तं पार्थेन रुद्रादप्रतिमं विभो
That weapon which you, mighty-armed one, mentioned for the sake of arms, O best of Bharatas, that unmatched weapon has been obtained by Partha from Rudra.
यत्तद्ब्रह्मशिरो नाम तपसा रुद्रमागमत्। अमृतादुत्थितं रौद्रं तल्लब्धं सव्यसाचिना
That which is called the Brahmashira, which Rudra granted through austerity, that fierce weapon arisen from nectar has been gained by the left-handed archer.
तत्समन्त्रं ससंहारं सप्रायश्चित्तमङ्गलम्। वज्रमस्त्राणि चान्यानि दण्डादीनि युधिष्ठिर
With its mantras, its withdrawal, its expiation and auspicious rites, and other weapons like the thunderbolt, and rods, O Yudhishthira.
यमात्कुबेराद्वरुणादिन्द्राच्च कुरुनन्दन। अस्त्राण्यधीतवान्पार्थो दिव्यान्यमितविक्रमः
From Yama, Kubera, Varuna, and Indra, O joy of the Kurus, Partha, steadfast in his vows, has learned divine weapons.
विश्वावसोस्तु तनयाद्गीतं नृत्यं च साम च। वादित्रं च यथान्यायं प्रत्यविन्दद्यथाविधि
From the son of Vishvavasu, he duly acquired song, dance, the Sama chants, and instrumental music according to proper order.
एवं कृतास्त्रः कौन्तेयो गान्धर्वं वेदमात्मवान्। सुखं वसति बीभत्सुरनुजस्यानुजस्तव
Thus, the son of Kunti, having mastered the weapons and the Gandharva Veda, dwells contentedly—Bibhatsu, your younger brother, with his own younger brother.
यदर्थं मां सुरश्रेष्ठ इदं वचनमब्रवीत्। तच्च ते कथयिष्यामि युधिष्ठिर निबोध मे
O Yudhishthira, listen to me: I will tell you the very message for which, O best of gods, you sent me.
भवान्मनुष्यलोकेऽपि गमिष्यति न संशयः। ब्रूयाद्युधिष्ठिरं तत्रवचनान्मे द्विजोत्तम
Without doubt, you yourself will go to the world of men; there, O best of Brahmins, convey my words to Yudhishthira.
आगमिष्यति ते भ्राता कृतास्त्रः क्षिप्रमर्जुनः। सुरकार्यं महत्कृत्वा यदशक्यं दिवौकसैः
Your brother Arjuna, having acquired the weapons, will soon return to you, after accomplishing a great task for the gods—one impossible even for the celestials.
तपसाऽपि त्वमात्मानं योजय भ्रातृभिः सह। तपसो हि परं नास्ति तपसा विन्दते महत्
You too, together with your brothers, should devote yourself to austerity; for there is nothing higher than austerity, and through austerity one attains greatness.
अहं च कर्णं जानामि यथावद्भरतर्षभ। सत्यसन्धं महोत्साहं महावीर्यं महाबलम्
O bull among the Bharatas, I know Karna well—steadfast in truth, of great energy, mighty valor, and immense strength.
महाहवेष्वप्रतिमं महायुद्धविशारदम्। महाधनुर्धरं वीरं महास्त्रं वरवर्णिनम्
Unmatched in great battles, skilled in mighty warfare, a heroic wielder of great bows, master of powerful weapons, and of excellent appearance.
महेश्वरसुतप्रख्यमादित्यतनयं प्रभुम्। तथाऽर्जुनमतिस्कन्धं सहजोल्वणपौरुणम्
Resembling the son of Maheshvara, lordly as the son of the Sun, so too is Arjuna—of surpassing prowess, with innate and fierce manliness.
न स पार्तस्य संग्रामे कलामर्हति षोडशीम्
In battle, he is not worthy even of a sixteenth part of Partha.
यच्चापि ते भयं कर्णान्मनसिस्थमरिंदम। तच्चाप्यपहरिष्यामि सव्यसाचिन्युपागते
And whatever fear you hold in your heart regarding Karna, O subduer of foes, I will dispel that too when Savyasacin returns.
