वेणा भीमरथी चैव नद्यौ पापभयापहे। मृगद्विजसमाकीर्णे तापसालयभूषिते
The rivers Venā and Bhīmarathī, indeed, remove sin and fear; teeming with deer and birds, adorned with hermitages.
राजर्षेस्तस् च सरिन्नृगस्य भरतर्षभ। रम्यतीर्था बहुजला पयोष्णी द्विजसेविता
O bull among Bharatas, the river Payoṣṇī of King Nṛga, with delightful banks and abundant waters, is frequented by twice-born ones.
अपि चात्र महायोगी मार्कण्डेयो महायशाः। अनुवंश्यां जगौ गाथां नृगस्य धरणीपतेः
Here, too, the great yogi Mārkaṇḍeya, renowned, sang a lineage song of King Nṛga, O lord of the earth.
नृगस् यजमानस्य प्रत्यक्षमिति नः श्रुतम्। `मरुतः परिवेष्टारः सदस्याश्च दिवौकसः
We have heard that Nṛga, the sacrificer, was visible to us; the Maruts were attendants, and the celestial beings were participants.
पयोष्ण्यां यजमानस्य वाराहे तीर्थ उत्तमे। उद्धृतं भूतलस्थं वावायुना समुदीरितम्। पयोष्ण्या हरते तोयं पापमामरणान्तिकम्
At the excellent Vārāha tīrtha on Payoṣṇī, the water, raised from the earth and stirred by the wind, removes sin leading to death.
स्वर्गादुत्तुङ्गममलं विषाणं यत्र शूलिनः। स्वमात्मविहितं दृष्ट्वा मर्त्यः शिवपुरं व्रजेत्
There, where the pure and lofty horn of Śiva rises above heaven, seeing what is fashioned by one's own soul, a mortal attains the city of Śiva.
एकतः सरितः सर्वा गङ्गाद्याः सलिलोच्चयाः। पयोष्णी चैकतः पुण्या तीर्थेभ्यो हि मता मम
On one side are all the rivers, like Gaṅgā and others, with abundant waters; on the other, Payoṣṇī alone is holy, for among tīrthas, it is my opinion.
माठरस्य वनं पुण्यं बहुमूलफलं शिवम्। यूपश्च भरतश्रेष्ठ वरुणस्रोतसे गिरौ
The sacred forest of Māṭhara, rich in roots and fruits and auspicious, and the sacrificial post, O best of Bharatas, on the mountain by Varuṇa's stream.
प्रवेण्युत्तरपार्स्वे तु पुण्ये कण्वाश्रमे तथा। तापसानामरण्यानि कीर्तितानि यथाश्रुति
On the northern side of Praveṇī, in the holy Kaṇva hermitage, the forests of ascetics are described as heard.
वेदी शूर्पारके तात जमदग्नेर्महात्मनः। रम्या पाषाणतीर्था च पुरश्चन्द्रा च भारत
O dear one, the altar at Śūrpāraka of the great-souled Jamadagni, the delightful stone tīrtha, and Puracandra, O Bhārata.
अशोकतीर्थं तत्रैव कौन्ते य बहुलाश्रमम्। अगस्त्यतीर्थं पाण्ड्येषु वारुणं च युधिष्ठिर
There also is the Ashoka tīrtha, O son of Kunti, with many hermitages; the Agastya tīrtha in the Pāṇḍya land, and the Varuṇa tīrtha, O Yudhiṣṭhira.
कुमार्यः कथिताः पुण्याः पाण्ड्येष्वेव नरर्षभ। ताम्रपर्णी तु कौन्तेय कीर्तयिष्यामि तां शृणु
The holy Kumārya tīrthas are mentioned in the Pāṇḍya land, O best of men; now I will recount the Tāmraparṇī, O son of Kunti, listen to it.
यत्र देवैस्तपस्तप्तं महदिच्छद्भिराश्रमे। गोकर्णमिति विख्यातं त्रिषु लोकेषु भारत
Where the gods, desiring greatness, performed austerities in the hermitage; Gokarṇa, famed in the three worlds, O Bhārata.
शीततोयो बहुजलः पुण्यस्तात शिवश्च सः। ह्रदः परमदुष्प्रापो मानुषैरकृतात्मभिः
That lake, with cold water and abundant, is holy and auspicious; extremely difficult to reach for humans of undisciplined soul.
तत्र वृक्षतृणाद्यैश्च संपन्नः फलमूलवान्। आश्रमोऽगस्त्यशिष्यस्य पुण्यो देवसहे गिरौ
There, furnished with trees and grasses, rich in fruits and roots, is the hermitage of Agastya's disciple, holy and divine on the mountain.
वैडूर्यपर्वतस्तत्र श्रीमान्मणिमयः शिवः। अगस्त्यस्याश्रमश्चैव बहुमूलफलोदकः
There is the Vaiḍūrya mountain, splendid, made of gems and auspicious; and the hermitage of Agastya, abundant in fruits, roots, and water.
सुराष्ट्रेष्वपि वक्ष्यामि पुण्यान्यायतनानि च। आश्रमान्सरितश्चैव सरांसि च नराधिप
In the Suraṣṭra region, I will also speak of holy shrines; hermitages, rivers, and lakes, O king.
चमसोद्भेदनं विप्रास्तत्रापि कथयन्त्युत। प्रभासं चोदधौ तीर्थं त्रिषु लोकेषु विश्रुतम्
The sages also recount the bursting of the Camasa; and Prabhāsa, the tīrtha by the ocean, renowned in the three worlds.
तत्र पिण्डारकं नाम तापसाचरितं शिवम्। उज्जयन्तश्च शिखरी क्षिप्रं सिद्धिकरो महान्
There is the holy Piṇḍāraka, abode of ascetics, and the great Ujjayanta peak, swiftly bestowing success.
तत्र देवर्षिवीरेण नारदेनानुकीर्तितः। पुराणः श्रूयते श्लोकस्तं निबोध युधिष्ठिर
There, by the heroic sage Nārada, a verse from ancient tradition is recited; listen to it, Yudhiṣṭhira.
पुण्ये गिरौ सुराष्ट्रेषु मृगपक्षिनिषेविते। उज्जयन्ते स्म तप्ताङ्गो नाकपृष्ठे महीयते
On the sacred mountain in Surāṣṭra, frequented by beasts and birds, Ujjayanta, Taptāṅga once shone, exalted in the heavenly realm.
एष नारायणः श्रीमान्क्षीरार्णवनिकेतनः। नागपर्यङ्कमुत्सृज्यह्यागतो मधुरां पुरीम्
This glorious Nārāyaṇa, dweller in the ocean of milk, having left the serpent couch, came to the city of Madhurā.
पुण्या द्वारवती तत्रयत्रासौ मधुसूदनः। साक्षाद्देवः पुराणोसौ स हि धर्मः सनातनः
There is holy Dvāravatī, where Madhusūdana dwells; he is the ancient god himself, the eternal Dharma.
ये च कवेदविदो विप्रा ये चाध्यात्मविदो जनाः। ते वदन्ति महात्मानं कृष्णं धर्मं सनातनम्
Those who know the Vedas, the learned priests, and those versed in the spiritual path, declare that the great Kṛṣṇa is the eternal Dharma.
पवित्राणां हि गोविन्दः पवित्रं परमुच्यते। पुण्यानामपि पुण्योसौ मङ्गालानां च मङ्गलम्। त्रैलोक्ये पुण्डरीकाक्षो देवदेवः सनातनः
Govinda is said to be the supreme purifier among all that is pure, the most auspicious among all that is auspicious; in the three worlds, Puṇḍarīkākṣa is the eternal god of gods.
अव्ययात्मा व्ययात्मा च क्षेत्रज्ञः परमेश्वरः। आस्ते हरिरचिन्त्यात्मा तत्रैव मधुसूदनः
Hari, whose nature is both imperishable and perishable, knower of the field, supreme lord, abides there as Madhusūdana, of unfathomable essence.
अवन्तीषु प्रतीच्यां वै कीर्तयिष्यामि ते दिशि। यानि तत्रपवित्राणि पुण्यान्यायतनानि च
In the western region of Avantī, I will recount for you the sacred and holy places found there.
प्रियङ्ग्वाम्रवणोपेता वानीरफलमालिनी। प्रत्यक्स्रोता नदी पुण्या नर्मदा तत्र भारत
There, O Bhārata, is the holy river Narmadā, adorned with groves of Priyaṅgu and mango trees, and rich with clusters of vanīra fruit.
त्रैलोक्ये यानि तीर्थानि पुण्यान्यायतनानि च। सरिद्वनानि शैलेन्द्रा देवाश्च सपितामहाः
All the sacred bathing places, holy shrines, rivers, forests, mountain lords, and gods with their ancestors found in the three worlds—
नर्मदायां कुरुश्रेष्ठ सहसिद्धर्षिचारणैः। स्नातुमायान्ति पुण्यौधैः सदा वारिषु भारत
On the Narmadā, O best of Kurus, countless perfected sages and ascetics always come to bathe in its holy waters, O Bhārata.
