घृणी कर्णः प्रमादी च आचार्यः स्थविरो गुरुः। अमर्षी बलवान्पार्थः संरम्भी दृढविक्रमः
Karna is proud and reckless, the teacher is aged and our elder; Partha is passionate, strong, fierce, and resolute in action.
भवेत्सुतुमुलं युद्धं सर्वस्याप्यपराजितम्। सर्वे ह्यस्त्रविदः शूराः सर्वे प्राप्ता महद्यशः
The battle will be fierce and unconquerable for all; for all are skilled in weapons, all are heroes, all have gained great fame.
अपि सर्वेश्वरत्वं हि न वाञ्छेरन्पराजिताः। वधे नूनं भवेच्छान्तिरेतेषां फल्गुनस्य वा
Even if they did not desire lordship over all, having been defeated, only the death of Phalguna could bring them peace.
न तु हन्ताऽर्जुनस्यास्ति जेता वाऽस्य न विद्यते। मन्युस्तस्य कथं शाम्येन्मन्दान्प्रति समुत्थितः
There is no slayer of Arjuna, nor is there anyone who can conquer him; how could his wrath subside, once roused against the foolish?
त्रिदशेशसमो वीरः खाण्डवेऽग्निमतर्पयत्। जिगा पार्थिवान्सर्वान्राजसूये महाक्रतौ
That hero, equal to the lords of the gods, satisfied Agni at Khandava, and subdued all kings at the great Rajasuya sacrifice.
शेषं कुर्याद्गिरेर्वज्रो निपतन्मूर्ध्नि संजय। न तु कुर्युः शराः शेषं क्षिप्तास्तात किरीटिना
Sanjaya, the thunderbolt falling on a mountain might leave something behind, but the arrows loosed by the diademed one will leave nothing.
यथा हि किरणा भानोस्तपन्तीह चराचरम्। तथा पार्थभुजोत्सृष्टाः शरास्तप्स्यन्ति मत्सुतान्
Just as the rays of the sun scorch all that moves and does not move, so too will the arrows released by Partha's arm burn my sons.
अपि तद्रथघोषेण भयार्था सव्यसाचिनः। प्रतिभाति विदीर्णेव सर्वतो भारती चमूः
At the very sound of Savyasacin's chariot, the entire Bharata army seems stricken with fear, as if torn apart on every side.
समुद्धरन्प्रवपंश्चैव बाणान् स्ताताऽऽततायी समरे किरीटि। सृष्टोऽन्तकः सर्वहरो विधात्रा भवेद्यथा तद्वदवारणीयः
As the diademed one draws and releases his arrows in battle, he seems like Death himself, created by the Creator to destroy all, and cannot be resisted.
यदतत्कथितं राजंस्त्वया दुर्योधनं प्रति। सर्वमेतद्यथातत्त्वं नतु मिथ्या महीपते
All that you have said to me, O king, regarding Duryodhana, is entirely true and not false, O lord of the earth.
मन्युना हि समाविष्टाः पाण्डवास्त्वमितौजसः। दृष्ट्वा कृष्णां सभां नीतां धर्मपत्नीं यशस्विनीं
Indeed, the Pandavas, possessed of immense energy, have been seized by wrath, having seen Krishna, their illustrious wife, dragged into the assembly.
दुःशासनस्य ता वाचः श्रुत्वा वै कटुकोदयाः। कर्णस्य च महाराज न स्वप्स्यन्तीति मे मतिः
Hearing the harsh and bitter words of Duhshasana, and also of Karna, O King, I think they will not sleep.
श्रुतं हि ते महाराज यथा पार्थेन संयुगे। एकादशतनुः स्थाणुर्धेनुषा परितोषितः
You have heard, O King, how in battle Partha pleased the eleven-formed Sthanu with a cow.
कैरातं वेषमास्थाय योधयामास फल्गुनम्। जिज्ञासुः सर्वदेवेशः कपर्दी भगवान्स्वयम्
Assuming the form of a Kirata, the Lord of all gods, the matted-haired, himself fought with Phalguna, wishing to test him.
लेभे पाशुपतं चापि परमास्त्रं महाद्युतिः।' तत्रैनं लोकपालास्ते दर्शयामासुरर्जुनम्। अस्त्रहेतोः पराक्रान्तं तपसा कौरवर्षभम्
That radiant one obtained the supreme weapon, the Pashupata; there, the guardians of the worlds showed Arjuna, striving for the weapon, to the gods, as he was advanced in asceticism, the bull among the Kurus.
नैतदुत्सहते चान्यो लब्धुमन्यत्र फल्गुनात्। साक्षाद्दर्शनमेतेषामीश्वराणां नरो भुवि
No other man on earth, except Phalguna, is capable of obtaining a direct vision of these lords.
महेश्वरेण यो राजन्न जीर्णो ग्रस्तमूर्तिमान्। कस्तमुत्सहते वीरो युद्धे जरयितुं पुमान्
O King, who, having contended with Maheshvara in battle and survived, still possessing form, would dare to weaken such a hero in combat?
आसादितमिदं घोरं तुमुलं रोमहर्षणम्। द्रौपदीं परिकर्षद्भिः कोपयद्भिश्च पाण्डवान्
This dreadful, tumultuous, and hair-raising event has occurred, with Draupadi being dragged and the Pandavas provoked.
यत्र विस्फुरमाणौष्ठो भीमः प्राह वचोऽर्थवत्। दृष्ट्वा दुर्योधनेनोरू द्रौपद्या दर्शितावुभौ
There, with lips quivering in anger, Bhima spoke meaningful words, having seen both of Draupadi's thighs exposed by Duryodhana.
ऊरुं भेत्स्यामि ते पाप गदया वज्रकल्पया। त्रयोदशानां वर्षाणामन्ते दुर्द्यूतदेविनः
I will shatter your thigh with my mace, as hard as a thunderbolt, at the end of thirteen years, O wicked gambler.
सर्वे प्रहरतां श्रेष्ठाः सर्वेचामिततेजसः। सर्वेसर्वास्त्रविद्वांसो देवैरपि सुदुर्जयाः
All are foremost among warriors, all possess immeasurable energy, all are masters of every weapon, and even the gods would find them hard to conquer.
मन्ये मन्युसमुद्भूताः पुत्राणां तव संयुगे। अन्तं पार्थाः करिष्यन्ति वीर्यामर्षसमन्विताः
I think, O King, that the sons of Pandu, arisen in wrath, endowed with valor and pride, will bring an end to your sons in battle.
किं कृतं सूत कर्णेन वदता परुषं वचः। पर्याप्तं वैरमेतावद्यत्कृष्णा सा सभां गता
What has Karna, the charioteer's son, accomplished by speaking such harsh words? The enmity is already sufficient, since Krishna was brought into the assembly.
अपीदानीं मम सुतास्तिष्ठेरन्मन्दचेतसः। येषां भ्राता गुरुर्ज्येष्ठो विनये नावतिष्ठते
Perhaps now my sons, whose minds are dull, might still stand, though their elder brother and preceptor does not restrain them in discipline.
ममापि वचनं सूत न शुश्रूषति मन्दभाक्। दृष्ट्वा मां चक्षुषा हीनं निर्विचेष्टमचेतसम्
Even my words, O charioteer, are not heeded by that unfortunate one, who, seeing me deprived of sight and helpless, pays me no attention.
ये चास्य सचिवा मन्दाः कर्णसौबलकादयः। ते तस्य भूयसो दोषान्वर्धयन्ति विचेतसः
And those foolish counselors of his, Karna, Saubala, and others, only increase the faults of that senseless one.
स्वैरं मुक्ता ह्यपि शराः पार्थेनामिततेजसा। निर्दहेयुर्मम सुतान्किंपुनर्मन्युनेरिताः
Even if released at will by Partha, possessed of immeasurable energy, the arrows would burn up my sons; how much more so when driven by wrath!
पार्थबाहुबलोत्सृष्टा महाचापविनिःसृताः। दिव्यास्त्रमन्त्रमुदिताः सादयेयुः सुरानपि
Launched by Partha's mighty arms, issuing from his great bow, and uttered with divine mantras, those celestial weapons could bring down even the gods.
यस्य मन्त्री च गोप्ता च सुहृच्चैव जनार्दनः। हनिस्त्रैलोक्यनाथः स किंनु तस् न निर्जितम्
He whose counselor, protector, and friend is Janardana, the slayer and lord of the three worlds—how could such a one ever be defeated?
इदं हि सुमहच्चित्रमर्जुनस्येह संजय। महादेवेन बाहुभ्यां यत्समेत इति श्रुतिः
Indeed, Sanjaya, it is a great marvel here concerning Arjuna, that he was joined in battle by Mahadeva, as the tradition tells.
