तां तथा ब्रुवतीं श्रुत्वा भृशं लज्जान्वितोऽर्जुनः। उवाच कर्णौ हस्ताभ्यां पिधाय त्रिदशोपमः
Hearing her speak in this way, Arjuna, deeply embarrassed, covered his ears with his hands, like a god.
दुःश्रुतं मेऽस्तु सुभगे यन्मां वदसि भामिनि। गुरुदारैः समाना मे निश्चयेन वरानने
Let these words you speak to me, O fortunate lady, be unheard by me, O beautiful one; for in my mind you are as one with the wives of my elders, O lovely-faced one.
[यथा कुन्तीमहाभागा यथेन्राणी शची मम। तथा त्वमपि कल्याणीनात्र कार्या विचारणा]
Just as the blessed Kunti and Queen Shachi are to me, so too are you, O auspicious one; there is no need for further deliberation here.
यच्चेक्षिताऽसि विस्पष्टं विशेषेण मया शुभे। तच्च मे कारणं सर्वं शृणु सत्येन सुस्मिते
O fair one, since you have been seen by me openly and distinctly, hear from me the full reason for this, O smiling lady, and I speak the truth.
इयं पौरववंशस् जननी सुदतीति ह। त्वामहं दृष्टवांस्तत्र विस्मयोत्फुल्ललोचनः
This Sudati, mother of the Paurava line, I saw you there, my eyes wide with amazement.
न मामर्हसि कल्याणि अन्यथा ध्यात्रमप्सरः। गुरोर्गरुतरा मे त्वं मम त्वं वंशवर्धिनी
O auspicious one, you should not think of me otherwise, O celestial nymph; you are weightier than my teacher, you are the enhancer of my lineage.
अनावृताश्च सर्वाः स्म देवराजाभिनन्दन। गुरुस्थाने न मां वीर नियोक्तुं त्वमिहार्हसि
All of us, O delight of the gods, are uncovered before you; you should not, O hero, command me here as one in the place of my teacher.
पितरः सोदराः पुत्रा नप्तारो वा त्विहागताः। तपसा रमयन्त्यस्मान्न च तेषां व्यतिक्रमः
Fathers, brothers, sons, or grandsons who have come here, please us through their austerities, and there is no transgression on their part.
तत्प्रसीद न मामार्तां विसर्जयितुमर्हसि। हृच्छयेन च संतप्तां भक्तां च भज मानद
Therefore, be gracious; do not reject me, who am afflicted, burning with love, and devoted to you, O bestower of honor.
शृणु सत्यंवरारोहे यत्त्वां वक्ष्याम्यनिन्दिते। शृण्वन्तु मे दिशश्चैव विदिशश्च सदेवताः
Hear the truth, O fair-hipped and blameless one, which I will speak to you; let the directions and intermediate directions with their deities listen as well.
यथा कुन्ती च माद्री च शची चैव समा इह। तथा च वंशजननी त्वं हि मेऽद्य गरीयसी
Just as Kunti, Madri, and Shachi are equal to me here, so too, as the mother of my line, you are today even greater to me.
गच्छ मूर्ध्ना प्रपन्नोस्मि पादौ ते वरवर्णिनि। त्वं हि मे मातृवत्पूज्या रक्ष्योऽहं पुत्रवत्त्वया
Go, for I have sought refuge at your feet, O beautiful one; you are to be honored by me as a mother, and I am to be protected by you as a son.
ततोऽवधूता पार्थेन उर्वशी क्रोधमूर्च्छिता। वेपन्ती भ्रुकुटीकक्रा शशापाथ धनंजयम्
Then Urvashi, scorned by Partha, overcome with anger, trembling and her brows knit, cursed Dhananjaya.
तव पित्राऽभ्यनुज्ञातां स्वयं च गृहमागताम्। यस्मान्मां नाभिनन्देथाः कामबाणवशंगताम्
Because, though permitted by your father and having come to your house of my own will, you did not welcome me, overcome by the arrows of desire—
तस्मात्त्वं नर्तकः पार्थ स्त्रीमध्ये मानवर्जितः। अपुंस्त्वेन च विख्यातः पण्ढवद्विचरिष्यसि
Therefore, O Partha, you shall live among women as a dancer, shunned by men, and you shall be known as impotent, moving about like a Pandava.
एवं दत्त्वाऽर्जुने शापं स्फुरितोष्ठी श्वसन्त्यथ। पुनः प्रत्यागता क्षिप्रमुर्वशी स्वं निवेशनम्
Having thus pronounced the curse on Arjuna, her lips quivering and breathing hard, Urvashi quickly returned to her own abode.
पार्थोपि लब्ध्वा शापं तं तां निशां दुःखितोऽवसम्। विवक्षुश्चित्रसेनाय प्रातः सर्वमहृष्टवत्
Having received that curse, Partha spent that night in sorrow, wishing to tell everything to Citrarshena in the morning.
ततः प्रभाते विमले गन्धर्वाय यथातथम्। निवेदयामास तदा चित्रसेनाय पाण्डवः
Then, when the bright morning came, the Pandava related all that had happened, just as it was, to Citrarshena the Gandharva.
तच्च सर्वं यथावृत्तं शापं चैव यथातथम्। अवेदयच्च शक्रस्य चित्रसेनोऽपि सर्वशः
And all that had happened, including the curse exactly as it was, Citrarśena fully reported to Śakra.
तदा त्वानाय्य तनयं विविक्ते हरिवाहनः। सान्त्वयित्वा शुभैर्वाक्यैः स्मयमानोऽभ्यभाषत
Then Harivāhana, bringing his son to a secluded place, comforted him with gentle words, smiling as he spoke.
सुपुत्राद्यपृथा तात त्वया पुत्रेण सत्तम। ऋषयोपि हि धैर्येण जिता वै ते महाभुज
O son, Kuntī is truly blessed to have you as her child, best among men; even the sages have been overcome by your steadfastness, O mighty-armed one.
यं च दत्तवती शापमुर्वशी तव मानद। स चापि तेऽर्थकृत्तात साधकश्च भविष्यति
And the curse that Urvaśī placed upon you, O honourable one, will indeed serve your purpose, O son, and will be accomplished.
अज्ञातवासो वस्तव्यो भवद्भिर्भूतलेऽनघ। वर्पे त्रयोदशे वीर तत्र त्वं गमयिष्यसि
You must dwell on earth in concealment, O sinless one, during the thirteenth year, O hero; there you will fulfill this.
तेन नर्तकवेपेण अपुंस्त्वेन तथैव च। वर्षमेकं विहृत्यैव ततः पुंस्त्वमवाप्स्यसि
With that dancer’s guise, and likewise with loss of manhood, after spending one year thus, you will regain your masculinity.
एवमुक्तस्तु शक्रेण फल्गुनः परवीरहा। मुदं परमिकां लेभे न च शापं व्यचिन्तयत्
Thus addressed by Śakra, Phālguna, destroyer of enemy heroes, felt the highest joy and did not worry about the curse.
चित्रसेनेन सहितो गन्धर्वेण यशस्विना। रेमे स स्वर्गभवने पाण्डुपुत्रो धनंजयः
Together with Citrarśena, the illustrious Gandharva, the son of Pāṇḍu, Dhanaṃjaya, enjoyed himself in the heavenly palace.
य इमां शृणुयान्नित्यं धृतिं पाण्डुसुतस्य वै। न तस्य कामः कामेषु पापकेषु प्रवर्तते
Whoever hears always of the steadfastness of the son of Pāṇḍu, his desire will not turn toward sinful pleasures.
इदममरवरात्मजस्य घोरं सुचि चरितं विनिशाम्य फल्गुनस्य। व्यपगतमददम्भरागदोषा- स्त्रिदिवगताऽभिरमन्ति मानवेन्द्राः
Having observed this pure and terrible conduct of Phālguna, son of the best of the immortals, the kings who have gone to heaven, free from pride, arrogance, and anger, rejoice.
ततो देवाः सगन्धर्वाः समादायार्घ्यमुत्तमम्। शक्रस्य मतमाज्ञाय पार्थमानर्चुर्जसा
Then the gods along with the Gandharvas, bringing the highest offering, honored Pārtha with energy, knowing Śakra’s wish.
पाद्यमाचमनीयं च प्रतिग्राह्य नृपात्मजम्। प्रवेशयामासुरथो पुरन्दरनिवेशनम्
They offered water for washing the feet and for sipping, and, receiving the prince, led him into the abode of Purandara.
