एवं संपूजितो जिष्णुरुवास भवने पितुः। उपशिक्षन्महास्राणि ससंहाराणि पाण्डवः
Thus honored, Jishnu dwelled in his father’s house, learning the great and secret weapons, O Pandava.
शक्रस्य हस्ताद्दयितं वज्रमस्त्रं च दुःसहम्। अशनीश्च महानादा मेघबर्हिणलक्षणाः
From Shakra’s hands, he received the beloved and formidable thunderbolt weapon, and the thunderous, cloud-bannered missiles.
गृहीतास्त्रस्तु कौन्तेयो भ्रातॄन्सस्मार पाण्डवः। पुरंदरनियोगाच्च पञ्चाब्दानवसत्सुखी
Having received the weapons, Kaunteya remembered his brothers; by Purandara’s command, he happily stayed there for five years.
ततः शक्रोऽब्रवीत्पार्थं कृतास्त्रं काल आगते। नृत्यं गीतं च कौन्तेय चित्रसेनादवाप्नुहि
Then Shakra said to Partha, now accomplished in weapons and as the time had come: ‘Learn dance and song from Citrarshena, O Kaunteya.’
वादित्रं देवविहितं नृलोके यन्न विद्यते। तदर्जयस्व कौन्तेय श्रेयो वै ते भविष्यति
‘Win for yourself, O Kaunteya, the divine music and instruments unknown in the world of men; this will bring you great benefit.’
सखायं प्रददौ चास्य चित्रसेनं पुरंदरः। स तेन सह संगम्य रेमे पार्थो निरामयः
Purandara also gave him Citrarshena as a companion; joining with him, Partha delighted, free from affliction.
गीतवादित्रनृत्यानि भूय एवादिदेश ह। तथाऽपि नालभच्छर्म तरस्वी द्यूतकारितम्
He again ordered songs, music, and dances to be performed, yet the mighty one did not obtain the skin lost in the game of dice.
दुःशासनवधामर्षी शकुनेः सौबलस्य च। ततस्तेनातुलां प्रीतिमुपागम्य क्वचित्क्वचित्। गान्धऱ्वमतुलं नृत्यं वादित्रं चोपलब्धवान्
Angered by the killing of Duḥśāsana and the deeds of Śakuni, son of Subala, he sometimes found incomparable delight in Gandharva dance and music.
स शिक्षितो नृत्यगुणाननेका- न्वादित्रगीतार्थगुणांश्च सर्वान्। न शर्ण लेभे परवीरहन्ता भ्रातॄन्स्मरन्मातरं चैव कुन्तीम्
Though he was trained in many virtues of dance and all the qualities of music and song, the slayer of enemy heroes found no joy, remembering his brothers and his mother Kuntī.
कदाचित्स हि देवेन्द्रश्चित्रसेनं रहोऽब्रवीत्। पार्थस्य चक्षुरुर्वश्यां सक्तं विज्ञाय वासवः
Once, Indra spoke privately to Citrarśena, having learned that Arjuna's mind was drawn to Urvaśī.
गन्धर्वराज गच्छाद्य प्रहितोऽप्सरसांवराम्। उर्वशीं पुरुषव्याघ्रं सोपातिष्ठतु फल्गुनम्
O king of the Gandharvas, go today, sent by the lord of the Apsarases, and let Urvaśī approach the tiger among men, Phālguna.
यथा न तामभिसृतां विद्यादस्मन्नियोगतः। तथा त्वया विधातव्यं स्त्रीसंसर्गविशारद
So that he does not know she comes at our command, you must arrange it thus, O expert in the ways of union with women.
एवमुक्तस्तथेत्युक्त्वा सोऽनुज्ञां प्राप्य वासवात्। गन्धर्वराजोऽप्सरसमभ्यगादुर्वशीं वराम्
Thus addressed, saying 'So be it,' and having received Indra's permission, the king of the Gandharvas went to the Apsaras Urvaśī.
तां दृष्ट्वा विदितो हृष्टः स्वागतेनार्चितस्तया। सुखासीनः सुखासीनां स्मितपूर्वं वचोऽब्रवीत्
Seeing him, she recognized him and joyfully welcomed him; seated comfortably, she, also seated at ease, smilingly spoke these words.
विदितं तेऽस्तु सुश्रोणि प्रेषितोऽहमिहागतः। त्रिदिवस्यैकराजेन त्वत्प्रसादाभिनन्दिना
Let it be known to you, O lovely-hipped one, that I have come here sent by the sole king of heaven, who delights in your favor.
यः स देवमनुष्येषु प्रख्यातः सहजैर्गुणैः। श्रिया शीलेन रूपेण श्रुतेन च बलेन च। प्रख्यातः शौर्यवीर्याभ्यां प्रपन्नः प्रतिभानवान्
He who among gods and men is renowned for his innate virtues—by his splendor, conduct, beauty, learning, and strength, famed for courage and valor, and possessed of intelligence—
तेजस्वी सौम्यीलश्च क्षमावाञ्जितमत्सरः। साङ्गोपनिषदान्वेदांश्चतुराख्यानपञ्चमान्
Radiant, gentle, patient, free from envy, learned in the Vedas with their limbs and Upaniṣads, and the four and five histories—
योऽधीते गुरुशुश्रूषां मेधां चाष्टगुणाश्रयाम्। ब्रह्मचर्येण दाक्ष्येण प्रसवैर्वयसाऽपि च
He who studies, serves his teacher, possesses eightfold intelligence, through chastity, skill, sacrifices, and even by his age—
एको वै रक्षिता चैव त्रिदिवं मघवानिव। अकत्थनो मानयिता स्थूललक्ष्यः प्रियंवदः
He alone is the protector of heaven, like Maghavan; not boastful, honoring others, steadfast in purpose, and gentle in speech.
सुहृदश्चान्नपानेन विविधेनाभिवर्षति। सत्यवागूर्जितो वक्ता रूपवाननहंकृतः
He showers his friends with various foods and drinks, speaks truthfully, is energetic, eloquent, handsome, and free from pride.
भक्तानुकम्पी कान्तश्च प्रियश्च स्थिरसंगरः। प्रार्थनीयैर्गुणगणैर्महेन्द्रवरुणोपमः
Compassionate to devotees, charming, dear, firm in resolve, possessing desirable virtues, he is like Mahendra and Varuṇa.
विदितस्तेऽर्जुनो वीरः स स्वर्गफलमाप्तवान्। तव शक्राभ्यनुज्ञातः पादावद्यप्रपद्यताम्
You know Arjuna, the hero, who has attained the fruit of heaven; by Śakra's command, he should now approach your feet.
एवमुक्ता स्मितं कृत्वा स्वात्मानं बहुमान्य च। प्रत्युवाचोर्वशी प्रीता चित्रसेनमनिन्दिता
Thus addressed, smiling and honoring herself, the blameless Urvaśī, pleased, replied to Citrarśena.
यत्त्वस्य कथितः सत्यो गुणोद्देशस्त्वयाऽनघ। तं श्रुत्वाऽन्यं प्रियं नारी वृणुयात्किमतोऽर्जुनं
O sinless one, the enumeration of his virtues you have spoken is true; hearing this, what other woman would choose anyone else over Arjuna?
तस्य चाहं गुणौघेन फल्गुने जातमन्मथा। गच्छत्वं हि याथाकाममागमिष्याम्यहं सुखम्
Because of his many virtues, O Phalguna, I was overcome with love for him; let him go as he wishes, for I will come to him happily.
ततो विसृज्यगन्धर्वं कृतकृत्या शुचिस्मिता। उर्वशी चाकरोत्स्नानं पार्थप्रार्थनलालसा
Then, having dismissed the Gandharva and accomplished her purpose, the lovely-smiling Urvashi, eager for Partha's request, took her bath.
स्नानालङ्कारनेपथ्यैर्गन्धमाल्यैश्च शौभनैः। धनंजयस्य रूपेण शरैर्मन्मथचोदितैः
With auspicious baths, ornaments, attire, fragrant unguents, and garlands, and adorned in the form of Dhananjaya, she was stirred by love's arrows.
अतिविद्धेन मनसा मन्मथेन प्रदीपिता। दिव्यास्तरणसंस्तीर्णे विस्तीर्णे शयनोत्तमे
Pierced deeply in her heart and inflamed by love, she, on a divine, wide, and excellent bed spread with celestial coverings—
चित्तसंकल्पभावेन सुचित्ताऽनन्यमानसा। मनोरथेन संप्राप्तं रमयन्तीव फल्गुनम्
With a mind intent and undistracted, shaped by her own desire, she delighted in Phalguna as if he had come to her by the power of her longing.
निशाम्य चन्द्रोदयनं विगाढे रजनीमुखे। प्रस्थिता सा पृथुश्रोणी पार्थस्य भवनं महत्
Seeing the moon rise at the deep beginning of night, that broad-hipped lady set out for the great mansion of Partha.
