स्पृष्टस्य त्र्यम्बकेणाथ फल्गुनस्यामितौजसः। यत्किं गच्छेत्यनुज्ञातस्त्र्यम्बकेण तदाऽर्जुनः
Touched by Tryambaka, Phalguna of boundless energy was permitted by Tryambaka to go wherever he wished.
स्वर्गं गच्छेत्यनुज्ञातस्त्र्यम्बकेण तदाऽर्जुनः। प्रणम्य शिरसा राजन्प्राञ्जलिर्भवमैक्षत
Permitted by Tryambaka to ascend to heaven, Arjuna, O King, bowed his head and looked on with joined palms.
ततः प्रभुस्त्रिदिवनिवासिनां वसी महामतिर्गिरिश उमापतिः शिवः। धनुर्महद्दितिजपिशाचसूदनं ददौ भवः पुरुषवराय गाण्डिवम्
Then the Lord, master of those who dwell in heaven, the wise mountain Lord, Shiva, Uma's consort, gave the great bow Gandiva, destroyer of demons and spirits, to the best of men.
ततः शुभं गिरिवरमीश्वरस्तदा सहोमयाऽसिततटसानुकन्दरम्। विहाय तं पतगमहर्षिसेवितं जगाम स्वं पुरुषवरस्य पश्यतः
Then the Lord of the mountains, together with Uma, left that auspicious mountain, with its black slopes and caves, and departed, as the best of men watched, leaving behind the bird-served place.
तस्य संपश्यतस्त्वेव पिनाकी गोवृषध्वजः। जगामादर्शनं भानुर्लोकस्येवास्तमीयिवान्
As he watched, Pinaki, the bull-bannered one, vanished from sight like the sun setting from the world.
ततोऽर्जुनः परं चक्रे विस्मयं परवीरहा। मया साक्षान्महादेवो दृष्ट इत्येव भारत
Then Arjuna, slayer of foes, was filled with wonder, thinking, 'I have seen Mahadeva directly.'
धन्योस्म्यनुगृहीतोस्मि यन्मया त्र्यम्बको हरः। पिनाकी वरदो रूपी दृष्टः स्पृष्टश्ट पाणिना
I am blessed and favored, for I have seen Tryambaka, Hara, Pinaki, the boon-giver, in form, and touched him with my hand.
कृतार्थं चावगच्छामि परमात्मानमात्मना। शत्रूंश्च विजितान्सर्वान्निर्वृत्तं च प्रयोजनम्
I understand that I am fulfilled, having realized the Supreme Self; all enemies are conquered, and the purpose is accomplished.
इत्येवं चिन्तयानस्य पार्थस्यामिततेजसः। ततो वैडूर्यवर्णाभो भासयन्सर्वतो दिशः। यादोगणवृतः श्रीमानाजगाम जलेश्वरः
As Partha of immeasurable energy was thus reflecting, then, shining in all directions with a hue like beryl, surrounded by hosts of aquatic beings, the glorious Lord of Waters arrived.
नागैर्नदैर्नदीभिश्च दैत्यैः साध्यैर्मरुद्गणैः। वरुणो यादसांभर्ता वशी तं देशमागमत्
Accompanied by serpents, rivers, streams, demons, Sadhyas, and Maruts, Varuna, master of the aquatic beings, arrived at that place.
अथ जाम्बूनदवपुर्विमानेन महार्चिषा। कुबेरः समनुप्राप्तो यक्षैरनुगतः प्रभुः
Then Kubera, the lord, arrived in a golden aerial chariot blazing with great radiance, accompanied by Yakshas.
विद्योतयन्निवाकाशमद्भुतोपमदर्शनः। धनानामधिपः श्रीमानर्जुनं द्रष्टुमागतः
Illuminating the sky and appearing wondrous to behold, the glorious lord of wealth came to see Arjuna.
तथा लोकान्तकः श्रीमान्यमः साक्षात्प्रतापवान्। मर्त्यमूर्तिधरैः सार्धं पितृभिर्लोकभावनैः
In the same way, the illustrious and mighty Yama, the ender of beings, came together with the Pitris, who uphold the worlds, all assuming mortal forms.
दण्डपाणिरचिन्त्यात्मा सर्वभूतविनाशकृत्। वैवस्वतो धर्मराजो विमानेनावभासयन्
Holding the staff, of unfathomable nature, destroyer of all creatures, Vaivasvata, the king of justice, shone forth in his celestial chariot.
त्रील्लोकान्गुह्यकांश्चैव गन्धर्वाश्चैव पन्नगान्। द्वितीय इव मार्ताण्डो युगान्ते समुपस्थिते
He illuminated the three worlds, the Yakshas, Gandharvas, and Nagas, like a second sun appearing at the end of an age.
भानुमन्ति विचित्राणि शिखराणि महागिरेः। समास्थायार्जुनं तत्रददृशुस्तपसान्वितम्
Seated upon the radiant and varied peaks of the great mountain, they saw Arjuna there, absorbed in austerity.
ततो मुहूर्ताद्भगवानैरावतशिरोगतः। आजगाम सहेन्द्राण्या शक्रः सुरगणैर्वृतः
Then, after a moment, the blessed Indra, mounted upon Airavata's head, arrived together with Sachi and surrounded by hosts of gods.
पाण्डुरेणातपत्रेण ध्रियमाणेन मूर्धनि। शुशुभे नागराजस्थः सितमभ्रमिव स्थितः
With a white parasol held above his head, Indra, seated upon the king of serpents, shone like a bright cloud in the sky.
संस्तूयमानो गन्धर्वैर्ऋषिभिश्च तपोधनैः। शृङ्गं गिरेः समासाद्य तस्थौ सूर्य इवोदितः
Praised by Gandharvas and ascetic sages rich in penance, he stood upon the mountain peak like the risen sun.
अथ मेघस्वनो धीमान्व्याजहार शुभां गिरम्। यमऋ परमधर्मज्ञो दक्षिणां दिशमास्थितः
Then the wise, thunder-voiced one spoke auspicious words: Yama, knower of supreme righteousness, stood in the southern direction.
अर्जुनार्जुन पश्यास्माँल्लोकपालान्समागतान्। दृष्टिं ते वितरामोऽद्य भवानर्हति दर्शनम्
"Arjuna, Arjuna, behold these assembled guardians of the worlds! Today we grant you our vision; you are worthy to see us."
पूर्वर्षिरमितात्मा त्वं नरो नाम महाबलः। नियोगाद्ब्रह्मणस्तात मर्त्यतां समुपागतः
"You are the ancient sage, of immeasurable soul, now born as the mighty human named Nara, come to mortality by the command of Brahma, dear one."
त्वया च वसुसंभूतो महावीर्यः पितामहः। भीष्मः परमधर्मात्मा जेतव्यश्च रणेऽनघ
"And by you, the mighty Bhishma, born of the Vasus and of supreme righteousness, must be conquered in battle, O sinless one."
क्षत्रं चाग्निसमस्पर्शं भारद्वाजेन रक्षितम्। निवातकवचाश्चैव संसाध्याः कुरुनन्दन
"The Kshatriya force, blazing like fire and protected by Bharadvaja, and the Nivatakavachas too, must be overcome by you, joy of the Kurus."
पितुर्ममांशो देवस्य सर्वलोकप्रतापिनः। कर्णश्व सुमहावीर्यस्त्वया वध्यो धनंजय
"Karna, of great might, born from a portion of my own father, the god who blazes in all worlds, must be slain by you, Dhananjaya."
अंशाश्च क्षितिसंप्राप्ता देवगन्धर्वरक्षसाम्। त्वया निपातिता युद्धेस्वकर्मफलनिर्जिताम्। गतिं प्राप्स्यन्ति कौन्तेय यथास्वमरिकर्शन
"Portions of gods, Gandharvas, and Rakshasas have descended to earth; those you strike down in battle, defeated by the fruit of their deeds, will attain their proper state, O Kaunteya, subduer of foes."
अक्षया तव कीर्तिश्च लोके स्थासय्ति फल्गुन। त्वया साक्षान्महादेवस्तोषितो हि महामृधे
"Your fame, O Phalguna, will remain imperishable in the world, for you have directly pleased the great god in mighty combat."
लघ्वी वसुमती चापि कर्तव्या विष्णुना सह
"And the earth must be made light, together with Vishnu."
गृहाणास्त्रं महाबाहो दण्डमप्रतिवारणम्। अनेनास्त्रेण सुमहत्त्वं हि कर्म करिष्यसि
Receive this weapon, O mighty-armed one, the rod that cannot be resisted; with this weapon, you will accomplish a truly great deed.
प्रतिजग्राह पार्थोपि विधिवत्कुरुनन्दनः। समन्त्रं सोपरोधं च समोक्षविनिवर्तनम्
Partha, the joy of the Kurus, duly accepted it, along with its mantras, its restrictions, and its rules for release and withdrawal.
