तूणौ चाप्यक्षयौ भूयस्तव पार्थ करोचितौ। भविष्यति शरीरं च नीरुजं कुरुनन्दन
And for you, Partha, inexhaustible quivers are again appropriate; your body, O joy of the Kurus, shall be free from pain.
प्रीतिमानस्मि वै पार्थ भवान्सत्यपराक्रमः। गृहाण वरमस्मत्तः काङ्क्षितं यन्नरर्षभ
I am pleased with you, Partha, for you are truly valiant; receive from me whatever boon you desire, O bull among men.
न त्वया सदृशः कश्चित्पुमान्मर्त्येषु भारत। दिवि वा वर्तते त्रं त्वत्प्रधानमरिंदम
No man among mortals, O Bharata, is your equal; even among the gods, you stand foremost, O subduer of foes.
वरं ददासि चेन्मह्यं कामं प्रीत्या वृषध्वज। कामये दिव्यामस्त्रं तद्धोरं पाशुपतं प्रभो
If you grant me a boon out of affection, O Bull-bannered One, I desire that divine and terrible weapon, the Pashupata, O Lord.
यत्तद्ब्रह्मशिरो नाम रौद्रं भीमपराक्रमम्। युगान्ते दारुणे प्राप्ते कृत्स्नं संहरते जगत्
That weapon named Brahmashira, fierce and dreadful in might, which, at the end of an age, destroys the entire world.
[कर्णभीष्मकृपद्रोणैर्भविता तु महाहवः। त्वत्प्रसादान्महादेव जयेयं तान्यथा युधि ।।]
[A great battle will occur with Karna, Bhishma, Kripa, and Drona; by your grace, O Mahadeva, may I conquer them in battle as is proper.]
जयेयं येन संग्रामे दानवान्राक्षसांस्तथा। राज्ञश्चैव पिशाचांश्च गन्धर्वानथपन्नगान्
By which I might conquer in battle the Danavas, Rakshasas, kings, Pisachas, Gandharvas, and also the Nagas.
यस्मिञ्शूलसहस्राणि गदाश्चोग्रप्रदर्शनाः। शराश्चाशीविषाकाराः संभवन्त्यनुमन्त्रिताः
In which thousands of spears and maces of terrifying aspect, and arrows shaped like venomous serpents, arise when invoked.
युध्येयं येन भीष्मेण द्रोणेन च कृपेण च। सूतपुत्रेण च रणे नित्यं कटुकभाषिणा
By which I might fight Bhishma, Drona, Kripa, and the son of the charioteer, who always speaks harshly in battle.
एष मे प्रथमः कामो भगवन्भगनेत्रहन्। त्वत्प्रसादाद्विनिर्बृत्तः समर्थः स्यामहं यथा ।। x भव उवाच
This is my foremost wish, O Lord, destroyer of Bhaga's eye: that, by your grace, I may become capable as you have declared.
ददामि तेऽस्त्रं दयितमहं पाशुपतं विभो। समर्थो धारणे मोक्षे संहारेऽपि च पाण्डव
I grant you, O mighty one, the beloved Pashupata weapon; you are capable of bearing, releasing, and withdrawing it, O Pandava.
न तद्वेद महेन्द्रोपि न यमो न च यक्षराट्। वरुणोप्यथवा वायुः कुतो वेत्स्यन्ति मानवाः
Not even Mahendra knows it, nor Yama, nor the lord of the Yakshas; not Varuna, nor Vayu—how then could men know it?
न त्वया सहसा पार्थ मोक्तव्यं पुरुषे क्वचित्। जगद्विनिर्दहेत्सर्वमल्पतेजसि पातितम्
O Partha, you must never release it hastily upon any person; the world would be destroyed if it struck someone of little strength.
अबध्यो नाम नास्त्यस्य त्रैलोक्ये सचराचरे। मनसा चक्षुषा वाचा धनुषा च निपात्यते
There is no one in the three worlds, moving or unmoving, who cannot be bound by it; it can be subdued by mind, eye, speech, and bow.
तच्छ्रुत्वा त्वरितः पार्थः शुचिर्भूत्वा समाहितः। उपसंगृह्य विश्वेशमधीष्वेत्यथ सोऽब्रवीत्
Hearing this, Partha quickly became pure and focused, approached the Lord of all, and said, 'Instruct me.'
ततस्त्वध्यापयामास सरहस्यनिवर्तनम्। तदस्त्रं पाण्डवश्रेष्ठं मूर्तिमन्तमिवान्तकम्
Then he taught him, with all its secret methods of withdrawal, that weapon, O best of the Pandavas, which appeared as if embodied Death.
उपतस्थे महात्मानं यथा त्र्यक्षमुमापतिम्। प्रतिजग्राह तच्चापि प्रीतिमानर्जुनस्तदा
He stood before the great-souled one as one would before the three-eyed Lord, Uma's consort; Arjuna then received it with joy and respect.
ततश्चचाल पृथिवी सपर्वतवनद्रुमा। ससागरवनोद्देशा सग्रामनगराकरा
Then the earth trembled, along with its mountains, forests, and trees, its oceans, wildernesses, towns, and cities.
शङ्खदुन्दुभिघोषाश्च भेरीणां च सहस्रशः। तस्मिनमुहूर्ते संप्राप्ते निर्घातश्च महानभूत्
Conch-shells and drums resounded, and thousands of bheris; at that moment, a great thunder occurred.
अथास्त्रं जाज्वलद्धोरं पाण्डवस्यामितौजसः। मूर्तिमद्विष्ठितं पार्श्वे ददृशुर्देवदानवाः
Then the blazing, dreadful weapon of the Pandava, of immeasurable energy, appeared embodied at his side, seen by gods and demons.
स्पृष्टस्य त्र्यम्बकेणाथ फल्गुनस्यामितौजसः। यत्किं गच्छेत्यनुज्ञातस्त्र्यम्बकेण तदाऽर्जुनः
Touched by Tryambaka, Phalguna of boundless energy was permitted by Tryambaka to go wherever he wished.
स्वर्गं गच्छेत्यनुज्ञातस्त्र्यम्बकेण तदाऽर्जुनः। प्रणम्य शिरसा राजन्प्राञ्जलिर्भवमैक्षत
Permitted by Tryambaka to ascend to heaven, Arjuna, O King, bowed his head and looked on with joined palms.
ततः प्रभुस्त्रिदिवनिवासिनां वसी महामतिर्गिरिश उमापतिः शिवः। धनुर्महद्दितिजपिशाचसूदनं ददौ भवः पुरुषवराय गाण्डिवम्
Then the Lord, master of those who dwell in heaven, the wise mountain Lord, Shiva, Uma's consort, gave the great bow Gandiva, destroyer of demons and spirits, to the best of men.
ततः शुभं गिरिवरमीश्वरस्तदा सहोमयाऽसिततटसानुकन्दरम्। विहाय तं पतगमहर्षिसेवितं जगाम स्वं पुरुषवरस्य पश्यतः
Then the Lord of the mountains, together with Uma, left that auspicious mountain, with its black slopes and caves, and departed, as the best of men watched, leaving behind the bird-served place.
तस्य संपश्यतस्त्वेव पिनाकी गोवृषध्वजः। जगामादर्शनं भानुर्लोकस्येवास्तमीयिवान्
As he watched, Pinaki, the bull-bannered one, vanished from sight like the sun setting from the world.
ततोऽर्जुनः परं चक्रे विस्मयं परवीरहा। मया साक्षान्महादेवो दृष्ट इत्येव भारत
Then Arjuna, slayer of foes, was filled with wonder, thinking, 'I have seen Mahadeva directly.'
धन्योस्म्यनुगृहीतोस्मि यन्मया त्र्यम्बको हरः। पिनाकी वरदो रूपी दृष्टः स्पृष्टश्ट पाणिना
I am blessed and favored, for I have seen Tryambaka, Hara, Pinaki, the boon-giver, in form, and touched him with my hand.
कृतार्थं चावगच्छामि परमात्मानमात्मना। शत्रूंश्च विजितान्सर्वान्निर्वृत्तं च प्रयोजनम्
I understand that I am fulfilled, having realized the Supreme Self; all enemies are conquered, and the purpose is accomplished.
इत्येवं चिन्तयानस्य पार्थस्यामिततेजसः। ततो वैडूर्यवर्णाभो भासयन्सर्वतो दिशः। यादोगणवृतः श्रीमानाजगाम जलेश्वरः
As Partha of immeasurable energy was thus reflecting, then, shining in all directions with a hue like beryl, surrounded by hosts of aquatic beings, the glorious Lord of Waters arrived.
नागैर्नदैर्नदीभिश्च दैत्यैः साध्यैर्मरुद्गणैः। वरुणो यादसांभर्ता वशी तं देशमागमत्
Accompanied by serpents, rivers, streams, demons, Sadhyas, and Maruts, Varuna, master of the aquatic beings, arrived at that place.
