ददामि ते विशालाक्ष चक्षुः पूर्वं मुनिर्भवान्। विजेष्यसि रणे शत्रूनपि सर्वान्दिवौकसः
I grant you, wide-eyed one, the vision that the sage once possessed; you shall conquer all enemies in battle, even those among the gods.
[प्रीत्या च तेऽहं दास्यामि यदस्त्रमनिवारितम्। त्वं हि शक्तो मदीयं तदस्त्रं धारयितुं क्षणात् ।।]
Out of affection, I shall give you that weapon which cannot be resisted; you are indeed capable of bearing my weapon, even for a moment.
ततो देवं महादेवं गिरिशं शूनपाणिनम्। ददर्श फल्गुनस्तत्र सह देव्या महाद्युतिम्
Then Phalguna beheld the great god, Mahadeva, Lord of the Mountain, holding the trident, together with the goddess, radiant with immense brilliance.
स जानुभ्यां महीं गत्वा शिरसा प्रणिपत्य च। प्रसादयामास हरं पार्थः परपुरंजयः
He went down upon his knees to the earth and bowed his head; Partha, conqueror of enemy cities, sought to please Hara.
कपर्दिन्सर्वभूतेश भगनेत्रनिपातन। [देवदेव महादेव नीलग्रीव जटाधर
O Kapardin, Lord of all beings, destroyer of Bhaga's eye, God of gods, great god, blue-necked, matted-haired one,
कारणानां च परमं जाने त्वां त्र्यम्बकं विभुम्। देवानां च गतिं देवं त्वत्प्रसूतमिदं जगत्
I know you as the supreme cause of all causes, O three-eyed Lord; this world, born from you, is the path of the gods.
अजेयस्त्वं त्रिभिर्लोकैः सदेवासुरमानुषैः। शिवाय विष्णुरूपाय विष्णवे शिवरूपिणे
You are unconquerable by the three worlds, with gods, demons, and humans; to Shiva in the form of Vishnu, to Vishnu in the form of Shiva, I bow.
दक्षियज्ञविनाशाय हरिरूपाय ते नमः। ललाटाक्षाय शर्वाय मीढुषे शूलपाणये
To you who destroyed Daksha's sacrifice, who take the form of Hari, I bow; to the one-eyed, to Sharva, to the gracious, to the trident-holder.
पिनाकगोप्त्रे सूर्याय मङ्गल्याय च वेधसे। प्रसादये त्वां भगवन्सर्वभूतमहेश्वर
To the protector of Pinaka, to the sun, to the auspicious, to the creator, I seek your favor, O Lord, great ruler of all beings.
गणेशं जगतः शम्भुं लोककारणकारणम्। प्रधानपुरुषातीतं परं सूक्ष्मतरं हरम्
To Ganesha, to Shambhu, cause of the world's causes, to Hara, who transcends both primordial matter and spirit, subtler than the subtlest.
व्यतिक्रमं मे भगवन्क्षन्तुमर्हसि शंकर। भगवन्दर्शनाकाङ्क्षी प्राप्तोस्मीमं महागिरिम्
O blessed one, you should forgive my transgression, O Shankara; desiring your vision, I have reached this great mountain.
दयितं तव देवेश तापसालयमुत्तमम्। प्रसादये त्वां भगवन्सर्वलोकनमस्कृतम्
Your beloved, O Lord of gods, is the supreme hermitage; I seek your favor, O Lord, revered by all worlds.
कृतो मयाऽयमज्ञानाद्विमर्दो यस्त्वया सह। शरणं प्रतिपन्नाय तत्क्षमस्वाद्य शंकर
Out of ignorance, I committed this conflict with you; I have taken refuge, so forgive me now, O Shankara.
तमुवाच महातेजाः प्रहसन्वृषभध्वजः। प्रगृह्य रुचिरं बाहुं क्षान्तमित्येव फल्गुनम्
The mighty, radiant bull-bannered one, smiling, spoke to him; grasping his beautiful arm, he said to Phalguna, 'You are forgiven.'
परिष्वज्य च बाहुभ्यां प्रीतात्मा भगवान्हरः। पुनः पार्थं सान्त्वपूर्वमुवाच वृषभध्वजः
Embracing Arjuna with both arms, the blessed Lord Hara, his heart full of affection, the Bull-bannered One again spoke words of comfort to Partha.
गङ्गाङ्गितजटः शर्वः पार्थस्यामिततेजसः। प्रगृह्य रुचिरं बाहुं वृत्तं ताम्रतलाङ्गुलिम्
Sharva, whose matted locks bear the Ganga, grasped the splendid, rounded arm of Partha, whose energy is boundless, his fingers coppery at the tips.
नरस्त्वं पूर्वदेहे वै नारायणसहायवान्। बदर्यां तप्तवानुग्रं तपो वर्षायुतान्बहून्
In a former body, you were a man accompanied by Narayana, and at Badari you performed severe austerities for many thousands of years.
त्वयि वा परमं तेजो विष्णौ वा पुरुषोत्तमे। युवाभ्यां पुरुषाग्र्याभ्यां तेजसा धार्यते जगत्
Whether in you or in Vishnu, the Supreme Person, that highest energy abides; by the power of you two foremost men, the world is sustained.
शक्राभिषेके सुमहद्धनुर्जलदनिःस्वनम्। प्रगृह्य दानवाः शस्तास्त्वया कृष्णेन च प्रभो
At the great anointing of Indra, you wielded a mighty bow that roared like thunderclouds; by you and Krishna, O lord, the Danavas were destroyed.
तदेतदेव गाण्डीवं तव पार्थ करोचितम्। भायामास्थाय तद्ग्रस्तं मया पुरुषसत्तम
Therefore, this very Gandiva is fitting for you, Partha; having assumed a fearful form, I myself once bore it, O best of men.
तूणौ चाप्यक्षयौ भूयस्तव पार्थ करोचितौ। भविष्यति शरीरं च नीरुजं कुरुनन्दन
And for you, Partha, inexhaustible quivers are again appropriate; your body, O joy of the Kurus, shall be free from pain.
प्रीतिमानस्मि वै पार्थ भवान्सत्यपराक्रमः। गृहाण वरमस्मत्तः काङ्क्षितं यन्नरर्षभ
I am pleased with you, Partha, for you are truly valiant; receive from me whatever boon you desire, O bull among men.
न त्वया सदृशः कश्चित्पुमान्मर्त्येषु भारत। दिवि वा वर्तते त्रं त्वत्प्रधानमरिंदम
No man among mortals, O Bharata, is your equal; even among the gods, you stand foremost, O subduer of foes.
वरं ददासि चेन्मह्यं कामं प्रीत्या वृषध्वज। कामये दिव्यामस्त्रं तद्धोरं पाशुपतं प्रभो
If you grant me a boon out of affection, O Bull-bannered One, I desire that divine and terrible weapon, the Pashupata, O Lord.
यत्तद्ब्रह्मशिरो नाम रौद्रं भीमपराक्रमम्। युगान्ते दारुणे प्राप्ते कृत्स्नं संहरते जगत्
That weapon named Brahmashira, fierce and dreadful in might, which, at the end of an age, destroys the entire world.
[कर्णभीष्मकृपद्रोणैर्भविता तु महाहवः। त्वत्प्रसादान्महादेव जयेयं तान्यथा युधि ।।]
[A great battle will occur with Karna, Bhishma, Kripa, and Drona; by your grace, O Mahadeva, may I conquer them in battle as is proper.]
जयेयं येन संग्रामे दानवान्राक्षसांस्तथा। राज्ञश्चैव पिशाचांश्च गन्धर्वानथपन्नगान्
By which I might conquer in battle the Danavas, Rakshasas, kings, Pisachas, Gandharvas, and also the Nagas.
यस्मिञ्शूलसहस्राणि गदाश्चोग्रप्रदर्शनाः। शराश्चाशीविषाकाराः संभवन्त्यनुमन्त्रिताः
In which thousands of spears and maces of terrifying aspect, and arrows shaped like venomous serpents, arise when invoked.
युध्येयं येन भीष्मेण द्रोणेन च कृपेण च। सूतपुत्रेण च रणे नित्यं कटुकभाषिणा
By which I might fight Bhishma, Drona, Kripa, and the son of the charioteer, who always speaks harshly in battle.
एष मे प्रथमः कामो भगवन्भगनेत्रहन्। त्वत्प्रसादाद्विनिर्बृत्तः समर्थः स्यामहं यथा ।। x भव उवाच
This is my foremost wish, O Lord, destroyer of Bhaga's eye: that, by your grace, I may become capable as you have declared.
