Who is this god? Is he Rudra himself, a yaksha, a celestial, or an asura? For on this great mountain, the gathering of the gods is seen.
No one except the god Pinaka-wielder can withstand the force of the thousands of arrows I have released.
Whether he is a god or a yaksha, or any other than Rudra, I will send him to the abode of Yama with my sharp arrows.
Then, with a delighted mind, the victorious one released hundreds of piercing darts, like rays from the sun, O King.
Those, with a pleased mind, the blessed creator of worlds, holding the trident, received like a mountain receives a shower of stones.
In a moment, Phalguna's arrows were exhausted, and he became fearful, seeing the depletion of his arrows.
The victorious one then thought of the blessed fire-god, recalling the inexhaustible quivers that had been given to him in the Khandava forest.
What shall I shoot with my bow, now that my arrows are spent? And who is this person who devours all my arrows?
With the tip of my bow, as with the sharp end of a spear against an elephant, I will send him to the abode of Yama, the wielder of the staff.
Then, grasping the bow's tip and pulling the bowstring tight, the radiant one struck with fists as hard as thunderbolts.
Kaunteya, slayer of enemy heroes, fought with the bow's tip; yet the mountain-dweller seized his divine bow.
Then Arjuna, his bow seized, stood with sword in hand, desiring the end of the battle, and rushed at him with speed.
Kurunandana, exerting the strength of his arms, struck the sharp sword upon his opponent's head, so forcefully it stuck even in mountains.
Having reached his opponent's head, the excellent sword shattered; then Phalguna fought with trees and stones.
Then the mighty Kirata, in divine form, caught the trees and stones hurled by the powerful Partha.
With fists like thunder, producing smoke from his mouth, the unconquerable Partha struck the Kirata in battle.
Then the divine Kirata, with fierce blows of fists like Indra's thunderbolt, tormented Phalguna.
Then arose a loud, harsh sound from the fists of Pandava and the Kirata as they fought.
For a long time, their battle was hair-raising, filled with blows of the arms, like that of Vritra and Indra.
O King, then mighty Jishnu struck the Kirata with his chest, and the Kirata, in turn, struck the struggling Pandava with force.
From the crushing of their arms and the collision of their chests, fire appeared on their bodies, bearing embers and smoke.
Then Mahadeva, pressing his body against him, overwhelmed him; by his brilliance, might, and wrath, he bewildered his mind.
Thus, with his limbs pressed and gathered together, Phalguna appeared as if molded, his body restrained by the god, O Bharata.
His breath ceased, his great spirit subdued; then, confused, he fell, and Bhava became pleased.
After remaining thus for a moment, he regained consciousness and rose again, his limbs covered in blood, greatly afflicted.
Seeking refuge, he approached the blessed Pinaka-holder; making a clay altar, he worshipped Bhava with a garland.
At that moment, Arjuna saw the garland resting upon the head of the Kirata; the foremost of the Pandavas was filled with joy and returned to his natural state.
The garland fell at the feet of that one, and Bhava was pleased; he spoke to him in words deep as thunder, seeing him amazed and his body weakened.
O Phalguna, I am pleased with you for your incomparable deed; in valor and resolve, no Kshatriya equals you.
Today, O sinless one, your energy and strength are equal to mine; I am pleased with you, mighty-armed, so behold me, O bull among Bharatas.
