As that hero, lion-shouldered and broad-chested, set out, Krishna, with joined palms, offered salutations to the gods for the Pandava, and spoke words of the highest purity and blessing.
Homage to the Creator and the Ordainer; may you go safely from forest to forest. May Dharma favor you, O Partha, and the Sun and Fire as well; may Brahma and the Brahmanas protect you, O Dhananjaya.
Having honored the word of your elder brother, and acting as the younger should, you should seek refuge in the Vasus, Rudras, Adityas, Maruts, the Visvedevas, and the Sadhyas, for the sake of peace, O bull among the Bharatas.
May good fortune come to you from the beings of the mid-space and the heavens, O bull among the Bharatas, and from all those on earth, including any who may be adversaries.
I consider this suffering—being exiled from one's sons—even greater than being confined, dwelling in the forest, or having all one's possessions taken away.
May there never again be birth in our Kshatriya line; I bow to the Brahmanas, whose livelihood is not by the weapon.
This is my greatest sorrow: that wicked Suyodhana, seeing me, laughed in the royal assembly and called me 'cow.'
Therefore, I consider this grief even heavier than all others: that he spoke such grave insults in the midst of the assembly.
Cast out from our homes and kingdom, O bull among the Bharatas, you have taken up residence in the forest, yet you remain steadfast out of friendship.
He who conquered all enemies and satisfied the fire with offerings—now people see you departing, O bull among the Bharatas.
Surely, in this great forest, your brothers and friends, as well as wandering bards and sages, will recount your deeds.
Whatever your mother Kunti desired for you at your birth, O mighty-armed Dhananjaya, may all that be yours, and whatever you yourself desire, O son of Kunti.
May the noble lady, sister of Vasudeva, see you returned, O Partha, just as Aditi beheld Indra of a thousand eyes.
Surely, all your brothers will delight through the night in stories of you, repeatedly praising your deeds.
O Partha, neither in pleasures, nor in wealth, nor even in life itself, will we find satisfaction or peace of mind while you are away for so long.
In you, O Partha, are established for all of us both happiness and sorrow, life and death, as well as the kingdom and its splendor.
You have taken leave of us, O son of Kunti; may you attain well-being, O Pandava. I shall see you return, accomplished in arms and blessed with good fortune.
You should not contend with those who are powerful, O faultless one; go swiftly, without hindrance, to victory, O mighty one.
Modesty, fortune, fame, steadfastness, nourishment, Uma, Lakshmi, and Sarasvati—may these goddesses guard your path, O Dhananjaya.
Having thus spoken her blessings, the illustrious Krishna fell silent.
Then, having circumambulated his brothers and Dhaumya, the mighty-armed Pandava set out, taking up his splendid bow.
Slowly, O best of Bharatas, the hero moved northward, forcefully clearing away trees, creepers, and vines, yet without getting entangled among them, the exceedingly strong one advanced.
As he went, all creatures withdrew from his path, for he was empowered by Indra's yoga, advancing with great energy.
He reached mountains frequented by ascetics, the divine, golden Himalaya, sacred and beloved of the gods, O scorcher of foes.
With a resolute mind, endowed with yogic power and moving as swiftly as the wind, he traversed the sacred mountain in a single day.
Crossing over Himavat and Gandhamadana, he passed through difficult regions tirelessly, by day and by night.
Arriving at Indrakila, Dhananjaya halted there; after traveling for six days and nights, on the seventh day, the Pandava reached his destination.
At the auspicious summit of Indrakila, he devoted himself to ascetic practice and yoga, standing with arms upraised, not moving any part of his body.
With mind composed and self-controlled, the steadfast son of the thousand-eyed one, Achyuta, heard a voice in the sky saying, 'Halt!'
Hearing this, Pandava looked all around, and then Savyasachi saw an ascetic at the foot of a tree.
