Having saluted those two heroes, they spoke to the wielder of the thunderbolt: 'All the divine weapons are to be obtained from Vasava; acquire the weapons, O son of Kunti, whatever you desire in your mind.'
All your words are firm, flawless, and esteemed by the virtuous; today, among the Pandavas, you alone have attained, O Dhananjaya.
The gods do not wish to be seen by one ignorant of dharma, nor by one who is unsuccessful, nor by one lacking austerity, nor by one whose mind is fickle or deceitful, O son of Kunti.
One who roars harshly, is envious, speaks bitter words, is deceitful, boastful, a slanderer, a killer, and doubtful.
A destroyer of trust, deceitful, wrathful, a speaker of falsehoods, excessively greedy, faithless, ungenerous, betrayer of friends, and suspicious of all—
One who abuses others, is arrogant, fierce, covetous, and insatiable; a thief, a drunkard, a slayer of the unborn, and one who violates the teacher’s bed—
A person who is excessively self-conceited and cruel—such men, O Dhananjaya, do not attain the worlds; they are cast out from all realms.
Compassion, sympathy, truthfulness, sensitivity to suffering, self-restraint, steadfastness, fortitude, righteousness, forgiveness, and the highest conduct—
Kindness, tranquility, virtue, reverence for elders, gratitude, friendship, devotion to the twice-born—all these dwell in you, Phalguna; impartiality toward all beings, mercy, generosity, intelligence, and memory as well.
Therefore, O son of Kuru, you will meet with Shakra, O Dhananjaya; for a meeting with one like you is praiseworthy even for the gods.
You are the supreme refuge, O bull of the Bharatas, for all friends and brothers; just as the slayer of Vritra is for the Maruts, so are you for them, dear one.
In that thirteenth year, mighty-armed one, your brothers and friends will all seek shelter in your strength of arms.
Therefore, O Partha, go to your father, the thousand-eyed subduer of foes; receive the grasp of his hand and obtain all weapons from Vasava.
Then Maghavan spoke these words at Shatasringa, O mighty-armed one, in the hearing of all beings, after embracing you and smelling your head.
Known to all beings, you will ascend to heaven, dear one; having attained the worlds of the virtuous, you will rejoice, O foremost of conquerors.
Honored by the gods, O Partha, you will delight greatly in heaven; having obtained supreme weapons, you will return again to earth.
O dear one, as Vasava burned Khandava, he repeatedly spoke of your virtues in the hearing of all beings.
O best of men, you should fulfill that vow of Vasava; having reached some place from here, set your mind on ascetic discipline.
You should act according to the beneficial words of Maghavan, O son of Kuru; having undertaken the vow today, go—you will see Purandara.
Then Bibhatsu, embracing both Krishna and the others, and taking leave of them all in his mind, departed, O best of men.
As that hero, lion-shouldered and broad-chested, set out, Krishna, with joined palms, offered salutations to the gods for the Pandava, and spoke words of the highest purity and blessing.
Homage to the Creator and the Ordainer; may you go safely from forest to forest. May Dharma favor you, O Partha, and the Sun and Fire as well; may Brahma and the Brahmanas protect you, O Dhananjaya.
Having honored the word of your elder brother, and acting as the younger should, you should seek refuge in the Vasus, Rudras, Adityas, Maruts, the Visvedevas, and the Sadhyas, for the sake of peace, O bull among the Bharatas.
May good fortune come to you from the beings of the mid-space and the heavens, O bull among the Bharatas, and from all those on earth, including any who may be adversaries.
I consider this suffering—being exiled from one's sons—even greater than being confined, dwelling in the forest, or having all one's possessions taken away.
May there never again be birth in our Kshatriya line; I bow to the Brahmanas, whose livelihood is not by the weapon.
This is my greatest sorrow: that wicked Suyodhana, seeing me, laughed in the royal assembly and called me 'cow.'
Therefore, I consider this grief even heavier than all others: that he spoke such grave insults in the midst of the assembly.
Cast out from our homes and kingdom, O bull among the Bharatas, you have taken up residence in the forest, yet you remain steadfast out of friendship.
He who conquered all enemies and satisfied the fire with offerings—now people see you departing, O bull among the Bharatas.
