ऋषिरेष मेहातेजा नारायणसहायवान्। पुराणः शास्वतो देवस्त्वजेयो जिष्णुरच्युतः
This one is a sage of great energy, accompanied by Nārāyaṇa; he is ancient, eternal, a god, unconquerable, victorious, and steadfast.
अस्त्राणीनद्राच्च रुद्राच्च लोकपालेभ्य एव च। समादाय महाबाहुर्महत्कर्म करिष्यति
Having received weapons from Indra, Rudra, and also from the guardians of the worlds, the mighty-armed one will perform a great deed.
वनादस्माच्च कौन्तेय वनमन्यद्विचिन्त्यताम्। निवासार्थाय यद्युक्तं भवेद्वः पृथिवीपते
O son of Kuntī, from this forest, consider another forest for your dwelling, if it would be suitable for you, O lord of the earth.
एकत्रचिरवासो हि न प्रीतिजननो भवेत्। तापसानां च शान्तानां भवेदुद्वेगकारकः
For a long stay in one place does not bring delight, and it may cause disturbance to the peaceful ascetics.
मृगाणामुपरोधश्च वीरुदोषधिसंक्षयः। बिभर्षि च बहून्विप्रान्वेदवेदाङ्गपारगान्
It causes obstruction to the animals, and the destruction of herbs and plants; and you support many Brāhmaṇas learned in the Vedas and Vedāṅgas.
एवमुक्त्वा प्रपन्नाय शुचये भगवान्प्रभुः। प्रोवाच योगतत्त्वज्ञो योगविद्यामनुत्तमाम्
Having thus spoken to the pure-hearted one who had sought refuge, the blessed lord, knower of the essence of yoga, taught him the supreme science of yoga.
धर्मराजाय धीमान्स व्यासः सत्यवतीसुतः। अनुज्ञाय च कौन्तेयं तत्रैवान्तरधीयत
To the king of righteousness, the wise Vyāsa, son of Satyavatī, having given permission to the son of Kuntī, then vanished from there.
युधिष्ठिरस्तु धर्मात्मा तद्ब्रह्म मनसा यतः। धारयामास मेधावी कालेकाले सदाऽभ्यसन्
But Yudhiṣṭhira, righteous-souled and self-controlled, retained that knowledge in his mind, and the intelligent one practiced it always, at the proper times.
स व्यासवाक्यमुदितो वनाद्द्वैतवनात्ततः। ययौ सरस्वतीकूले काम्यकं नाम काननम्
Then, inspired by Vyasa's words, he departed from the Dvaita forest and went to the forest called Kamyaka, on the banks of the Sarasvati.
तमन्वयुर्महाराज शिक्षाक्षरविशारदाः। ब्राह्मणास्तपसा युक्ता देवेन्द्रमृषयो यथा
He was followed, O King, by Brahmanas skilled in learning and letters, devoted to austerity, like sages attending upon Indra.
ततः काम्यकमासाद्य पुनस्ते भरतर्षभ। न्यविशन्त महात्मानः सामान्याः सपदानुगाः
Having reached Kamyaka, O best of the Bharatas, those great souls, along with their attendants, settled there again.
तत्रते न्यवसन्राजन्कंचित्कालं मनस्विनः। धनुर्वेदपरा वीरा गृणाना वेदमुत्तमम्
There those high-minded heroes, devoted to the science of archery, dwelled for some time, reciting the supreme Veda.
चरन्तो मृगयां नित्यं शुद्धैर्बाणैर्मृगार्थिनः। पितृदैवतविप्रेभ्यो निर्वपन्तो यथाविधि
Constantly engaging in the hunt with pure arrows, seeking game, they offered the proper shares to ancestors, deities, and Brahmanas, as prescribed.
कस्यचित्त्वथ कालस्य धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः। संस्मृत्य मुनिसंदेशमिदं वचनमब्रवीत्
Then, after some time, King Yudhishthira, recalling the sage's instruction, spoke these words.
विविक्ते विदितप्रज्ञमर्जुनं पुरुषर्षभ। सान्त्वपूर्वं स्मितं कृत्वापाणिना परिसंस्पृशन्
In a secluded place, to Arjuna, whose wisdom was well known, the best of men, he gently spoke, first with a smile, touching him with his hand.
स मुहूर्तमिव ध्यात्वा वनवासमरिंदमः। धनंजयंधर्मराजो रहसीदमुवाच ह
Having reflected for a moment on their life in the forest, the subduer of foes, King Yudhishthira, spoke these words to Dhananjaya in private.
भीष्मे द्रोणे कृपे कर्णे द्रोणपुत्रे च भारत। धनुर्वेदश्चतुष्पाद एतेष्वद्य प्रतिष्ठितः
O Bharata, in Bhishma, Drona, Kripa, Karna, and Drona's son, the fourfold science of archery now resides.
दैवं ब्राह्मं चासुरं च सप्रयोगचिकित्सितम्। सर्वास्त्राणां प्रयोगं च अभिजानन्ति कृत्स्नशः
They fully know the divine, Brahmanic, and demonic weapons, along with their application and remedies, and the use of all missiles.
ते सर्वे धृतराष्ट्रस्य पुत्रेण परिसान्त्विताः। संविभक्ताश्च तुष्टाश्च गुरुवत्तेषु वर्तते। सर्वयोधेषु चैवास्य सदा प्रीतिरनुत्तमा
All of them, gratified and satisfied by Dhritarashtra's son, are treated as teachers; he shows supreme favor to all his warriors.
आचार्या मानितास्तुष्टाः शान्तिं व्यवहरन्न्युत। शक्तिं न हापयिष्यन्ति ते काले प्रतिपूजिताः
The honored and satisfied teachers conduct themselves peacefully; being properly respected, they will not withhold their power at the right time.
अद्य चेयं मही कृत्स्ना दुर्याधनवशानुगा। सग्रामनगरा पार्थ ससागरवनाकरा ।। भवानेव प्रियोऽस्माकं त्वयि भारः समाहितः
Now, O Partha, this entire earth, with its towns, villages, oceans, forests, and mountains, is under Duryodhana's sway. Only you are dear to us; the burden rests with you.
अत्र कृत्यं प्रपश्यामि प्राप्तकालमरिंदम। कृष्णद्वैपायनात्तात गृहीतोपनिषन्मया
Here I see a task that has come at the right time, O subduer of foes; I have received the Upanishad from Krishna Dvaipayana.
गृहीतया तया सम्यग्जगत्सर्वं प्रकाशते। तेन त्वं ब्रह्मणा तात संयुक्तः सुसमाहितः
With that properly received, the entire world is revealed; by that, O dear one, you are united with Brahman, well concentrated.
देवतानां यथाकालं प्रसादं प्रतिपालय। तपसा योजयात्मानमुग्रेण भरतर्षभ
At the proper time, seek the favor of the deities; devote yourself to severe austerity, O best of the Bharatas.
धनुष्मान्कवची खङ्गी मुनिः साधुव्रते स्थितः। न कस्यचिद्ददन्मार्गं गच्छ तातोत्तरां दिशम्
Armed with bow, armor, and sword, established in the vow of a sage, do not give your path to anyone; go, dear one, to the northern direction.
इनद्रे ह्यस्त्राणि दिव्यानि समस्तानि धनंजय। वृत्राद्भीतैर्बलं देवैस्तदा शक्रे समर्पितम्
For from Indra, O Dhananjaya, all the divine weapons were once entrusted to him by the gods, fearful of Vritra's strength.
तान्येकस्थानि सर्वाणि ततस्त्वं प्रतिपत्स्यसे। `अनेन ब्रह्मणा तात सर्वं संप्रतिपद्यते
All these will be gathered together, and then you will obtain them; with this knowledge, dear one, everything is attained.
शक्रमेव प्रपद्यस्व स तेऽस्त्राणि प्रदास्यति। दीक्षितोऽद्यैव गच्छ त्वं द्रष्टुं देवं पुरंदरम्
Seek refuge in Indra alone; he will grant you the weapons. Today itself, consecrated, go to see the god Purandara.
एवमुक्त्वा धर्मराजस्तमध्यापयत प्रभुः
Having spoken thus, the lord Dharma-king instructed him.
दीक्षितं विधिना तेन यतवाक्कायमानसम्। अनुजज्ञे तदा वीरं भ्राता भ्रातरमग्रजः
Consecrated according to the rite, with restrained speech, body, and mind, the elder brother then permitted the hero.
