अति यज्ञविदां लोकान्क्षमिणः प्राप्नुवन्ति च। अति ब्रह्मविदां लोकानति चापि तपस्विनाम्
The worlds attained by those who know sacrifices, and those attained by the patient, surpass those attained by knowers of Brahman and ascetics.
अन्ये वै यजुषां लोकाः कर्मिणामपरे तथा। क्षमावतां ब्रह्मलोके लोकाः परमपूजिताः
There are worlds for those who follow the Yajur Veda, and others for those who act; but the worlds of the patient in Brahman are supremely honored.
क्षमा तेजस्विनां तेजः क्षमा ब्रह्म तपस्विनाम्। क्षमा सत्यं सत्यवतां क्षमा यज्ञः क्षमा शभः
Forgiveness is the brilliance of the brilliant, forgiveness is Brahman for ascetics; forgiveness is truth for the truthful, forgiveness is sacrifice, forgiveness is purity.
तां क्षमां तादृशीं कृष्णे कथमस्मद्विधस्त्यजेत्। यत्रब्रह्म च सत्यं च यज्ञा लोकाश्च धिष्ठिताः
How could one such as us, O Krishna, abandon such forgiveness, in which Brahman, truth, sacrifice, and the worlds are established?
इज्यन्ते यज्वनां लोकाः क्षमिणामपरे तथा।' क्षन्तव्यमेव सततं पुरुषेण विजानता। यदा हि क्षमते सर्वं ब्रह्म संपद्यते तदा
The worlds of sacrificers are attained, and likewise those of the patient; one who knows should always forgive, for when one forgives all, one attains Brahman.
क्षमावतामयं लोकः परश्चैव क्षमावताम्। इह सन्मानमृच्छन्ति परत्र च परा गतिम्
This world belongs to the patient, and the next as well; here they receive honor, and hereafter they attain the highest state.
येषां मन्युर्मनुष्याणां क्षमयाऽभिहतः सदा। तेषां परतरे लोकास्तस्मात्क्षान्तिः परा मता
Those among humans whose anger is always subdued by forgiveness attain higher worlds; therefore, forgiveness is considered supreme.
इति गीताः काश्यपेन गाथानित्यं क्षमावताम्। श्रुत्वा गाथाः क्षमायास्त्वं तुष्यद्रौपदि मा क्रुधः
Thus were these verses on forgiveness always sung by Kashyapa; hearing these verses about forgiveness, be pleased, Draupadi, and do not be angry.
पितामहः शान्तनवः रशमं संपूजयिष्यति। कृष्णश्च देवकीपुत्रः शमं संपूजयिष्यति
The grandsire, son of Shantanu, will honor restraint; and Krishna, son of Devaki, will also honor restraint.
आचार्यो विदुरः क्षत्ता शममेव वदिष्यतः। कृपश्च संजयश्चैव शममेव वदिष्यतः
The teacher, Vidura, and the charioteer will speak only of restraint; likewise Kripa and Sanjaya will speak only of restraint.
सोमदत्तो युयुत्सुश्च द्रोणपुत्रस्तथैव च। पितामहश्च नो व्यासः शमं वदति नित्यशः
Somadatta, Yuyutsu, and the son of Drona as well; and our grandsire Vyasa always speaks of restraint.
एतैर्हि राजा नियतं चोद्यमानः शमं प्रति। राज्यं दातेति मे बुद्धिर्न चेल्लोभान्नशिष्यति
Urged towards restraint by these men, the king will certainly give back the kingdom, so I believe; otherwise, greed will not let him.
कालोऽयं दारुणः प्राप्तो भरतानामभूतये। निश्चितं मे सदैवैतत्पुरस्तादपि भामिति
This harsh time has come upon the Bharatas for their ruin; I have always thought this, even before.
सुयोधनो नार्हतीति क्षमा मामेव विन्दति। अर्हस्तत्राहमित्येवं तस्मान्मां विन्दते क्षमा
Suyodhana is not worthy, so forgiveness finds me; I am worthy there, thus forgiveness finds me.
एतदात्मवतां वृत्तमेष धर्मः सनातनः। क्षमा चैवानृशंस्यं च तत्कर्ताऽस्म्यहमञ्जसा
This is the conduct of those who possess self-mastery, this is the eternal law; forgiveness and compassion—I am indeed their doer, directly.
नमो धात्रे विधात्रे च यौ मोहं चक्रतुस्तव। पितृपैतामहे राज्ये वोढव्ये तेऽन्यथा मतिः
Homage to the Creator and the Ordainer, who cast delusion upon you; your mind turned otherwise regarding the kingdom inherited from your fathers and grandfathers.
[कर्मभिश्चिन्तितो लोको गत्यांगत्यां पृथग्विधः। तस्मात्कर्माणि नित्यानि लोभान्मोक्षं यियासति ।]
[The world is shaped by actions, with various courses and obstacles; therefore, one should always perform actions, for by greed one seeks liberation.]
नेह धर्मानृशंस्याभ्यां न क्षान्त्या नार्जवेन च। पुरुषः श्रियमाप्नोति न घृणित्वेन कर्हिचित्
Here, a person does not attain prosperity by righteousness, compassion, forgiveness, or honesty, nor ever by pity.
त्वां चेद्व्यसनमभ्यागादिदं भारत दुःसहम्। स त्वं नार्हसि नापीमे भ्रातरस्ते महौजसः
If this unbearable misfortune has come upon you, O Bharata, you do not deserve it, nor do these mighty brothers of yours.
न हि तेऽध्यगमञ्जातु तदानीं नाद्य भारत। धर्मात्प्रियतरं किंचिदपि चेज्जीवितादपि
You have never, O Bharata, at any time, nor even now, held anything dearer than righteousness, not even life itself.
धर्मार्थमेव ते राज्यं धर्मार्थं जीवितं च ते। ब्राह्मणा गुरवश्चैव जानन्त्यपि च देवताः
Your kingdom is for the sake of righteousness alone, and your life too is for righteousness; the Brahmins, elders, and even the gods know this.
भीमसेनार्जुनौ चोभौ माद्रेयौ च मया सह। त्यजेस्त्वमिति मे बुद्धिर्न तु धर्मं परित्यजेः
Bhimasena, Arjuna, the sons of Madri, and I—my mind is that you might abandon us, but never would you abandon righteousness.
राजानं धर्मगोप्तारं धर्मो रक्षति रक्षितः। इति मे श्रुतमार्याणां त्वां तु मन्ये न रक्षति
Righteousness protects the king who protects righteousness; so I have heard from the noble ones, but I think it does not protect you.
त्यक्त्वाऽन्यान्हि नरव्याघ्र नित्यदा धर्म एव ते। बुद्धिः सततमन्वेति छायेवं पुरुषं निजा
O tiger among men, forsaking all others, your mind always follows only righteousness, just as a shadow follows its own person.
नावमंस्था हि सदृशान्नावराञ्श्रेयसः कुतः। अवाप्य पृथिवीं कृत्स्नां न ते शृङ्गमवर्धत
You have never looked down upon those equal to you, nor upon those inferior; how then could you seek greater merit? Even after obtaining the entire earth, your pride did not increase.
स्वाहाकारैः स्वधाभिश्च पूजाभिरपि च द्विजान्। देवताश्च पितॄंश्चैव सततं पार्थ सेवसे
With offerings of svāhā and svadhā, and with acts of worship, O Pārtha, you constantly serve the twice-born, the gods, and the ancestors.
ब्राह्मणाः सर्वकामैस्ते सततं पार्थ तर्पिताः। यतयो मोक्षिणश्चैव गृहस्ताश्चैव भारत
O Pārtha, the brāhmaṇas, ever satisfied with all their desires, the ascetics seeking liberation, and the householders as well, O Bhārata, are always gratified by you.
भुञ्जते रुक्मपात्रीभिर्यत्राहं परिचारिका। आरण्यकेभ्यो वन्यानि भोजनानि प्रयच्छसि। नादेयं ब्राह्मणेभ्यस्ते गृहे किंचन विद्यते
They eat from golden vessels, where I am the attendant; you provide forest produce for food to those dwelling in the woods; and in your house, O king, there is nothing that is not to be given to the brāhmaṇas.
यदिदं वैश्वदेवान्ते सायं प्रातः प्रदीयते। तद्दत्त्वाऽतिथिभृत्येभ्योराजञ्शिष्टेनजीवसि
Whatever remains at the end of the Vaiśvadeva offering, given in the evening and morning, you distribute to guests and servants, O king, and live on what is left.
इष्टयः पशुबन्धाश्च काम्यनैमित्तिकाश्च ये। वर्तन्ते पाकयज्ञाश्च सदा यज्ञाश्च तेऽनघ
Sacrifices, animal offerings, and those performed for desire or occasion, as well as cooked offerings and constant sacrifices, O sinless one, are always maintained by you.
