Fathers would kill sons, and sons likewise their fathers; husbands would kill wives, and wives their husbands as well.
In such a world, filled with anger, there would be no birth, O auspicious one; know that birth is the root of harmony among people.
All such people, O Draupadi, would quickly perish; therefore, anger leads to destruction and the extinction of beings.
Because patient ones, equal to the earth, are seen in the world, birth and existence of beings are thus established.
One should forgive in every adversity, O beautiful one; for the birth of beings is attributed to those who possess forgiveness.
He who, though insulted, struck, or angered, forgives with greater strength, and who always conquers anger, wise and noble, even if powerful, attains eternal worlds.
But the angry man, of little understanding, perishes both here and after death.
Here, too, these verses are cited, always recited among the patient, sung by the great-souled Kashyapa to Krishna.
Forgiveness is righteousness, forgiveness is sacrifice, forgiveness is the Vedas, forgiveness is learning; whoever knows this, attains all through great forgiveness.
Forgiveness is Brahman, forgiveness is truth, forgiveness is what has been and what will be; forgiveness is austerity, forgiveness is purity, by forgiveness this world is sustained.
The worlds attained by those who know sacrifices, and those attained by the patient, surpass those attained by knowers of Brahman and ascetics.
There are worlds for those who follow the Yajur Veda, and others for those who act; but the worlds of the patient in Brahman are supremely honored.
Forgiveness is the brilliance of the brilliant, forgiveness is Brahman for ascetics; forgiveness is truth for the truthful, forgiveness is sacrifice, forgiveness is purity.
How could one such as us, O Krishna, abandon such forgiveness, in which Brahman, truth, sacrifice, and the worlds are established?
The worlds of sacrificers are attained, and likewise those of the patient; one who knows should always forgive, for when one forgives all, one attains Brahman.
This world belongs to the patient, and the next as well; here they receive honor, and hereafter they attain the highest state.
Those among humans whose anger is always subdued by forgiveness attain higher worlds; therefore, forgiveness is considered supreme.
Thus were these verses on forgiveness always sung by Kashyapa; hearing these verses about forgiveness, be pleased, Draupadi, and do not be angry.
The grandsire, son of Shantanu, will honor restraint; and Krishna, son of Devaki, will also honor restraint.
The teacher, Vidura, and the charioteer will speak only of restraint; likewise Kripa and Sanjaya will speak only of restraint.
Somadatta, Yuyutsu, and the son of Drona as well; and our grandsire Vyasa always speaks of restraint.
Urged towards restraint by these men, the king will certainly give back the kingdom, so I believe; otherwise, greed will not let him.
This harsh time has come upon the Bharatas for their ruin; I have always thought this, even before.
Suyodhana is not worthy, so forgiveness finds me; I am worthy there, thus forgiveness finds me.
This is the conduct of those who possess self-mastery, this is the eternal law; forgiveness and compassion—I am indeed their doer, directly.
Homage to the Creator and the Ordainer, who cast delusion upon you; your mind turned otherwise regarding the kingdom inherited from your fathers and grandfathers.
[The world is shaped by actions, with various courses and obstacles; therefore, one should always perform actions, for by greed one seeks liberation.]
Here, a person does not attain prosperity by righteousness, compassion, forgiveness, or honesty, nor ever by pity.
If this unbearable misfortune has come upon you, O Bharata, you do not deserve it, nor do these mighty brothers of yours.
You have never, O Bharata, at any time, nor even now, held anything dearer than righteousness, not even life itself.
