Hearing Draupadi’s words, gentle, well-spoken, and auspicious, King Yudhishthira, smiling, spoke to Draupadi.
You are angry for a reason, O wise lady, because of the evil-minded son of Dhritarashtra; you consider anger in many ways and for many reasons—listen to me as I explain the root of anger, which is the enemy, and its causes.
Anger destroys people, and anger also brings them into being again; know, O noble lady, that existence and non-existence both have anger as their root.
He who restrains his anger, O beautiful one, has existence; but he who does not restrain his anger, truly, has non-existence; therefore, anger is the cause of non-existence, O lovely one.
But the man who always gives way to anger, O good lady, for him, anger leads to utter ruin.
Destruction rooted in anger is seen among people here; so how could someone like me give way to anger, which destroys the world?
An angry man may commit sin, may even kill his elders in anger; in anger, with harsh words, he disregards even what is best.
A person enraged never knows what should or should not be said; for the angry, there is nothing that should not be done, nor anything that should not be spoken.
Out of anger, one may harm even those who should not be harmed, and honor those who deserve punishment; in anger, a man may even send himself to the abode of Yama.
Seeing these faults, the wise conquer anger, desiring the highest good both here and hereafter.
How can those like us, Draupadi, whose bodies are composed of restraint, abandon anger as the wise do? Remembering this, my wrath does not increase.
One who does not retaliate against the angry, protects both himself and others from great danger; this is the remedy for those who suffer.
If a foolish man, suffering and powerless, becomes angry, he ultimately abandons himself to the strength of others.
When one abandons himself in this way, he loses his own self, and the worlds are lost to him; therefore, Draupadi, self-restraint in anger is prescribed for the powerless.
If a wise and capable person, suffering, becomes angry, after destroying his enemy, he does not rejoice in the next world.
Therefore, it is said that both the strong and the weak must always forgive, even in adversity, if they possess understanding.
O Krishna, the virtuous praise victory over anger here; the victory of forgiveness is always esteemed by the good.
Truth is superior to falsehood, compassion to cruelty; thus, anger, which is full of faults, is avoided by the good. One like me should abandon it, for it destroys all worlds.
Those wise and far-seeing ones whom the learned call 'radiant' are so because anger does not dwell within them, this is certain.
When anger arises, one restrains it with discernment; those who know reality regard such a person as truly radiant.
O fair-hipped one, when a man is angry, he does not see what ought to be done properly; nor does he see what ought not to be done, nor the limits of propriety.
In anger, one kills even those who should not be killed, and speaks harshly even to elders; therefore, anger must be kept far away when acting with energy.
Skill, endurance, courage, and swiftness are qualities of energy; but when overcome by anger, they cannot be attained easily.
By abandoning anger, a person attains true energy; but for those who are angry, even the wise, energy is difficult to obtain at the proper time.
Anger is always declared by the wise not to be energy; passion is established for the destruction of the world among men.
Therefore, a person acting rightly should always abandon anger; it is certain that one's own duty, even if modest, is better than acting in anger.
If all the ignorant and mindless transgress, how could such transgression be proper for one like me, who is blameless?
If there were not those among men who forgive, equal to the earth, there would be no harmony among people, for conflict arises from anger.
If one who is cursed were to curse in return, or if one slain by a teacher were to slay, then destruction of beings and unrighteousness would become widespread.
If a person who is insulted were to insult everyone in turn, or strike back when struck, or harm when harmed, then—
