युधिष्ठिरेण संप्राप्तो राजसूयो महाक्रतुः
The great Rajasuya sacrifice was accomplished by Yudhishthira.
सुनयाद्वासुदेवस्य भीमार्जुनबलेन च। घातयित्वा जरासन्धं चैद्यं च बलगर्वितम्
By the wise counsel of Vasudeva and the strength of Bhima and Arjuna, Jarasandha and the proud Chedi king were slain.
दुर्योधनं समागच्छन्नर्हणानि ततस्ततः। मणिकाञ्चनरत्नानि गोहस्त्यश्वधनानि च
Then Duryodhana, coming there, saw the many gifts—gems, gold, jewels, cows, elephants, horses, and wealth.
विचित्राणि च वासांसि प्रावारावरणानि च। कम्बलाजिनरत्नानि राङ्कवास्तरणानि च
He saw also the varied garments, cloaks, coverings, woolen blankets, deer skins, precious rugs, and fine carpets.
समृद्धां तां तथा दृष्ट्वा पाण्डवानां तदा श्रियम्। ईर्ष्यासमुत्थः सुमहांस्तस्य मन्युरजायत
Beholding the great prosperity of the Pandavas, a vast envy arose in him, born of jealousy.
विमानप्रतिमां तत्र मयेन सुकृतां सभाम्। पाण्डवानामुपहृतां स दृष्ट्वा पर्यतप्यत
Seeing the assembly hall, crafted by Maya and resembling a celestial palace, brought to the Pandavas, he was tormented.
तत्रावहसितश्चासीत्प्रस्कन्दन्निव संभ्रमात्। प्रत्यक्षं वासुदेवस्य भीमेनानभिजातवत्
There, in his confusion, he was laughed at as he stumbled, right before Vasudeva and Bhima, as if he lacked noble birth.
स भोगान्विविधान्भुञ्जन्रत्नानि विविधानि च। कथितो धृतराष्ट्रस्य विवर्णो हरिणः कृशः
Enjoying various pleasures and jewels, Dhritarashtra's son was described as pale, thin, and emaciated like a deer.
अन्वजानात्ततो द्यूतं धृतराष्ट्रः सुतप्रियः। तच्छ्रुत्वा वासुदेवस्य कोपः समभवन्महान्
Then Dhritarashtra, fond of his son, approved the game of dice; hearing this, Vasudeva's anger became great.
नातिप्रीतमनाश्चासीद्विवादांश्चान्वमोदत। द्यूतादीननयान्घोरान्विविधांश्चाप्युपैक्षत
His mind was not well pleased, and he took no joy in the disputes; he overlooked the terrible injustices and various wrongs arising from the dice.
निरस्य विदुरं भीष्मं द्रोणं शारद्वतं कृपम्। विग्रहे तुमुले तस्मिन्दहन्क्षत्रं परस्परम्
Rejecting Vidura, Bhishma, Drona, Sharadvata, and Kripa, in that tumultuous conflict, the kshatriyas burned with mutual enmity.
जयत्सु पाण्डुपुत्रेषु श्रुत्वा सुमहदप्रियम्। दुर्योधनमतं ज्ञात्वा कर्णस्य शकुनेस्तथा
When the sons of Pandu were victorious, hearing the great misfortune, and knowing the intentions of Duryodhana, Karna, and Shakuni—
धृतराष्ट्रश्चिरं ध्यात्वा संजयं वाक्यमब्रवीत्। शृणु संजय सर्वं मे नचासूयितुमर्हसि
After long reflection, Dhritarashtra spoke to Sanjaya: 'Listen to everything I say, Sanjaya, and do not take offense.'
श्रुतवानसि मेधावी बुद्धिमान्प्राज्ञसंमतः। न विग्रहे मम मतिर्न च प्रीये कुलक्षये
You are learned, wise, and esteemed for your understanding; I have no desire for conflict, nor do I rejoice in the destruction of our family.
न मे विशेषः पुत्रेषु स्वेषु पाम्डुसुतेषु वा। वृद्धं मामभ्यसूयन्ति पुत्रा मन्युपरायणाः
I make no distinction between my own sons and the sons of Pandu; yet my sons, given to anger, resent me, though I am old.
अहं त्वचक्षुः कार्पण्यात्पुत्रप्रीत्या सहामि तत्। मुह्यन्तं चानुमुह्यामि दुर्योधनमचेतनम्
Out of weakness and affection for my sons, I endure this, though I am blind; I am confused, and I share in the confusion of senseless Duryodhana.
राजसूये श्रियं दृष्ट्वा पाण्डवस्य महौजसः। तच्चावहसनं प्राप्य सभारोहणदर्शने
At the Rajasuya, seeing the splendor and great might of the Pandava, and witnessing his ascent to the throne, my son was humiliated.
अमर्षितः स्वयं जेतुमशक्तः पाण्डवान्रणे। निरुत्साहश्च संप्राप्तुं सुश्रियं क्षत्रियोऽपि सन्
Angered and unable to defeat the Pandavas in battle, though a Kshatriya, he lost heart and could not attain such prosperity.
गान्धारराजसहितश्छद्मद्यूतममन्त्रयत्। तत्र यद्यद्यथा ज्ञातं मयां संजय तच्छृणु
Together with the king of Gandhara, he devised the deceitful dice game; whatever I know about what happened there, listen to it, Sanjaya.
श्रुत्वा तु मम वाक्यानि बुद्धियुक्तानि तत्त्वतः। ततो ज्ञास्यसि मां सौते प्रज्ञाटचक्षुषमित्युत
When you hear my words, spoken with reason and truth, then, O son of Suta, you will know me as one who sees with the eye of wisdom.
यदाऽश्रौषं धनुरायम्य चित्रं विद्धं लक्ष्यं पातितं वै पृथिव्याम्। कृष्णां हृतां प्रेक्षतां सर्वराज्ञां तदा नाशंसे विजयाय संजय
When I heard that Arjuna, drawing his bow, struck the target and brought it down to the ground, and that Krishna was won before all the kings, then, Sanjaya, I did not hope for victory.
यदाऽश्रौषं द्वारकायां सुभद्रां प्रसह्योढां माधवीमर्जुनेन। इन्द्रप्रस्थं वृष्णिवीरौ च यातौ तदा नाशंसे विजयाय संजय
When I heard that Subhadra of Dwaraka was seized and married by Arjuna, and that the two Vrishni heroes went to Indraprastha, then, Sanjaya, I did not hope for victory.
यदाऽश्रौषं देवराजं प्रवृष्टं शरैर्दिव्यैर्वारितं चार्जुनेन। अग्निं तथा तर्पितं खाण्डवे च तदा नाशंसे विजयाय संजय
When I heard that Arjuna repelled the king of the gods with divine arrows, and that Agni was satisfied at Khandava, then, Sanjaya, I did not hope for victory.
यदाऽश्रौषं जातुषाद्वेश्मनस्ता- न्मुक्तान्पार्थान्पञ्च कुन्त्या समेतान्। युक्तं चैषां विदुरं स्वार्थसिद्ध्यै तदा नाशंसे विजयाय संजय
When I heard that the five sons of Kunti escaped from the house of lac, and that Vidura aided them for their own good, then, Sanjaya, I did not hope for victory.
यदाऽश्रौषं द्रौपदीं रङ्गमध्ये लक्ष्यं भित्त्वा निर्जितामर्जुनेन। शूरान्पञ्चालान्पाण्डवेयांश्च युक्तां- स्तदा नाशंसे विजयाय संजय
When I heard that Draupadi was won in the arena, after Arjuna pierced the target, and that the brave Panchalas and Pandavas were united, then, Sanjaya, I did not hope for victory.
यदाऽश्रौषं मागधानां वरिष्ठं जरासन्धं क्ष्वमध्ये ज्वलन्तम्। दोर्भ्यां हतं भीमसेनेन गत्वा तदा नाशंसे विजयाय संजय
When I heard that Bhimasena slew Jarasandha, the foremost of the Magadhas, in single combat, then, Sanjaya, I did not hope for victory.
यदाऽश्रौषं दिग्जये पाण्डुपुत्रै- र्वशीकृतान्भूमिपालान्प्रसह्य। महाक्रतुं राजसूयं कृतं च तदा नाशंसे विजयाय संजय
When I heard that the Pandavas subdued the kings of the earth in their campaign, and performed the great Rajasuya sacrifice, then, Sanjaya, I did not hope for victory.
यदाऽश्रौषं द्रौपदीमश्रुकण्ठीं सभां नीतां दुःखितामेकवस्त्राम्। रजस्वलां नाथवतीमनाथव- त्तदा नाशंसे विजयाय संजय
When I heard that Draupadi, weeping, was dragged into the assembly, distressed, in a single garment, menstruating, with protectors yet unprotected, then, Sanjaya, I did not hope for victory.
यदाऽश्रौषं वाससां तत्र राशिं समाक्षिपत्कितवो मन्दबुद्धिः। दुःशासनो गतवान्नैवं चान्तं तदा नाशंसे विजयाय संजय
When I heard that the foolish Duhshasana gathered a heap of garments there, and Duhshasana left without ending it, then, Sanjaya, I did not hope for victory.
यदाऽश्रौषं हृतराज्यं युधिष्ठिरं पराजितं सौबलेनाक्षवत्याम्। अन्वागतं भ्रातृभिरप्रमेयै- स्तदा नाशंसे विजयाय संजय
When I heard that Yudhishthira was defeated at dice by Shakuni, lost his kingdom, and was followed by his incomparable brothers, then, Sanjaya, I did not hope for victory.
