Wells, O best of Kurus, and also water reservoirs, were constructed all around within a mile, and the ground was made uneven; all the bridges were destroyed, and the walls were renewed.
By its nature, the fortress was difficult and well-protected, and by its nature, it was well-armed, especially at that time, O sinless one.
Well-protected, well-guarded, and equipped with all weapons, that city, O best of Bharatas, was like the palace of Indra.
No outsider could exit, nor could any outsider enter the city of the Vrishnis and Andhakas, O king, at the time of Saubha's arrival.
O Kaurava, in all the crossroads and squares, the army stood, O king, filled with many elephants and horses.
That army, O lord of men, had received their wages and food, their weapons and equipment were supplied, and their bedding was arranged.
No one was unpaid, nor had anyone received excess wages; no one was favored unduly, nor was there any untested in valor.
Thus, O king, Dvaraka was well administered with generous gifts, and well protected by Ahuka, the lotus-eyed king.
Then, O king, Salva, lord of Saubha, approached and encamped with a great force of men and elephants.
That army, stationed on level ground with abundant water, was equipped with fourfold forces and guarded by King Salva.
Avoiding cremation grounds, shrines, anthills, and sacred places, the army was arrayed.
By dividing the battalions, the roads were well arranged, both the foremost and the rearmost, in Salva's camp, O king.
It was furnished with all kinds of weapons, skilled in every weapon, crowded with chariots, elephants, horses, and throngs of foot soldiers.
Endowed with content and well-nourished troops, marked by the signs of heroes, with splendid banners and varied chariots and bows.
Having arrayed his army thus in Dvaraka, O bull among men, he then advanced swiftly, like the king of birds.
Seeing Salva's army advancing, the sons of the Vrishni clan went out to fight.
Unable to endure the attack of King Salva, O Kaurava, Charudeshna, Samba, and Pradyumna, the mighty charioteer, went forth.
All of them, adorned with diverse ornaments and banners, mounted on chariots, engaged with many leading warriors of King Salva.
Samba, taking up his bow, joyfully fought in battle with Kshemadhurti, the commander of Salva's forces.
Then Jambavati's son released a great shower of arrows upon Kshemadhurti, O best of Bharatas, like the thousand-eyed god pouring rain.
That tumultuous shower of arrows the commander endured, O great king, unmoved like the Himalaya.
Then Kshemadhurti himself, O king, released upon Samba a great network of arrows, conjured by illusion.
Then Sāmba, having pierced the illusory net with his own illusion, showered a thousand arrows upon the chariot.
Thereupon, Kṣemadhūrti, the commander, struck by Sāmba, fled with his swift horses, tormented by Sāmba's arrows.
As that leader of Sālva's forces was driven off by the arrow, a powerful asura named Vegavān rushed at my son.
But Sāmba, scion of the Vṛṣṇi clan, confronted the charge of Vegavān, O king, and the hero stood firm, restraining his force.
Then Sāmba, son of Rukmiṇī, with true valor, hurled his mighty mace at Vegavān with great speed.
Struck by that mace, Vegavān fell to the ground, O king, like a wind-broken, uprooted tree with decayed roots.
When that mighty asura, wounded by the mace, fell, my son entered the great army and began to fight.
A great chariot-warrior among the Dānavas, named Vivindhya, renowned for his mighty bow, engaged in battle with Cārudeṣṇa.
