ततोऽहमपि कौरव्य रोषव्याकुललोचनः। निश्चित्य मनसा राजन्वधायास्य मनो दधे
Then I too, O Kauravya, my eyes red with anger, resolved in my mind, O king, to slay him.
आनर्तेषु विमर्दं च क्षेपं चात्मनि कौरव। प्रवृद्धमवलेपं च तस्य दुष्कृतकर्मणः
I considered the violence he had wrought among the Ānartas, the insult to myself, and the growing arrogance of that evildoer.
ततः सौभवधायाहं प्रतस्थे पृथिवीपते। स मया सागरावर्ते दृष्ट आसीत्परीप्सता
Then, O lord of the earth, I set out to destroy Saubha; I saw it, desiring to seize it, in the midst of the ocean.
ततः प्रध्माप्य जलजं पाञ्चजन्यमहे नृप। आहूय साल्वं समरे युद्धाय समवस्थितः
Then, O king, blowing the conch Pāñcajanya, I summoned Śālva to battle and stood ready for combat.
तन्मुहूर्तमभूद्युद्धं तत्र मे दानवैः सह। शवीभूताश्च मे सर्वे भूतले च निपातिताः
For a moment there was battle between me and the Dānavas there; all of them were slain by me and fell to the earth.
एतत्कार्यं महाबाहो येनाहं नागमं तदा। श्रुत्वैव हास्तिनपुरे द्यूतं चाविनयोत्थितम्। द्रुतमागतवान्युष्मान्द्रष्टुकामः सुदुःखितान्
This was the reason, O mighty-armed one, that I did not come then; for I heard in Hastināpura of the dice game and the disgrace that arose, and I came quickly, desiring to see you in your deep distress.
वासुदेव महाबाहो विस्तरेण महामते। सौभस्य वधमाचक्ष्व न हि तृष्यामि कथ्यतः
O mighty-armed Vāsudeva, O wise one, recount in detail the destruction of Saubha; I do not tire of hearing it.
हतं श्रुत्वा महाबाहौ मया श्रौतश्रवं नृप। उपायाद्भरतश्रेष्ठ साल्वो द्वारवतीं पुरीम्
Having heard that the mighty-armed king was slain, O king, Salva, best of the Bharatas, approached the city of Dvāravatī by a certain means.
अरुणत्तां सुदुष्टात्मा सर्वतः पाण्डुनन्दन। साल्वो वैहायसं चापि तत्पुरं व्यूह्य धिष्ठितः
That wicked-hearted Salva besieged the city from all sides, O delight of the Pandus, and stationed his aerial city, arranging his forces.
तत्रस्थोऽथ महीपालो योधयामास तां पुरीम्। अभिसारेण सर्वेण तत्र युद्धमवर्तत
Then, the king, remaining there, began to attack the city, and a battle took place with the entire force advancing.
पुरी समन्ताद्विहिता सपताका सतोरणा। सचक्रा सहुडा चैव सयन्त्रखनका तथा
The city was fortified on all sides, adorned with banners and gateways, with wheels, ramparts, and also equipped with engines and trenches.
सोपशल्यप्रतोलीका साट्टाट्टालकगोपुरा। सचक्रग्रहिणी चैव सोल्कालातावपोथिका
It had bastions and main streets, towers and turrets, mechanisms for seizing wheels, and also devices for repelling fire and attacks.
सोष्टिका भरतश्रेष्ठ सभेरीपणवानका। सतोमराङ्कुशा राजन्सशतघ्नीकलाङ्गला
It had posts, O best of Bharatas, drums and kettledrums, spears and hooks, O king, and implements for killing hundreds, as well as ploughs.
सभुशुण्ड्यश्मगुडका सायुधा सपरश्वधा। लोहचर्मवती चापि साग्निः सगुडशृङ्गिका। शास्त्रदृष्टेन विधिना सुयुक्ता भरतर्षभ
It had battering rams and stone hurlers, was armed with weapons and axes, covered with iron armor, equipped with fire and horned clubs, and was properly prepared according to the prescribed methods, O bull among the Bharatas.
रथैरनेकैर्विविधैर्गदसाम्बोद्धवादिभिः। पुरुषैः कुरुशार्दूल समर्थैः प्रतिवारणे
With many kinds of chariots, maces, and loud-sounding weapons, and men, O tiger among Kurus, capable of defense.
अतिख्यातकुलैर्वीरैर्दृष्टवीर्यैश्च संयुगे। मध्यमेन च गुल्मेन रक्षिभिः सा सुरक्षिता। उत्क्षिप्तगुल्मैश्च तथा हयैश्च सपताकिभिः
With warriors from renowned families, whose valor was proven in battle, and with a moderate force of guards, it was well protected, along with raised detachments and horses bearing banners.
आघोषितं च नगरे न पातव्या सुरेति वै। प्रमादं परिरक्षद्भिरुग्रसेनोद्धवादिभिः
It was proclaimed in the city: 'Let nothing be neglected!' by Ugrasena, Uddhava, and others, who guarded against carelessness.
प्रमत्तेष्वभिघातं हि कुर्यात्साल्वो नराधिपः। इति कृत्वाऽप्रमत्तास्ते सर्वेवृष्ण्यन्धकाः स्थिताः
For if they were careless, Salva, the king, would strike; thus, all the Vrishnis and Andhakas remained vigilant.
आनर्ताश्च तथा सर्वे नटनर्तकगायकाः। बहिर्निर्वासिताः सर्वे रक्षद्भिर्वित्तसंचयम्
All the Anartas, as well as dancers, actors, and singers, were expelled outside, while the guards protected the treasury.
संक्रमा भेदिताः सर्वे नावश्च प्रतिषेधिताः। परिखाश्चापि कौरव्य कीलैः सुनिचिताः कृताः
All the bridges were destroyed, boats were prohibited, and the moats, O descendant of Kuru, were carefully fortified with stakes.
उदपानाः कुरुश्रेष्ठ तथैवाप्यम्बरीषकाः। समन्तात्क्रोशमात्रं च कारिता विषमा च भूः। `संक्रमा भेदिताः सर्वे प्राकाराश्च नवीकृताः
Wells, O best of Kurus, and also water reservoirs, were constructed all around within a mile, and the ground was made uneven; all the bridges were destroyed, and the walls were renewed.
प्रकृत्या विषमं दुर्गं प्रकृत्या च सुरक्षितम्। प्रकृत्या चायुधोपेतं विशेषेण तदाऽनघ
By its nature, the fortress was difficult and well-protected, and by its nature, it was well-armed, especially at that time, O sinless one.
सुरक्षितं सुगुप्तं च सर्वायुधसमन्वितम्। तत्पुरं भरतश्रेष्ठ यथेन्द्रभवनं तथा
Well-protected, well-guarded, and equipped with all weapons, that city, O best of Bharatas, was like the palace of Indra.
न चामुद्रोऽभिनिर्याति न चामुद्रः प्रवेश्यते। वृष्ण्यन्धकपुरे राजंस्तदा सौभसमागमे
No outsider could exit, nor could any outsider enter the city of the Vrishnis and Andhakas, O king, at the time of Saubha's arrival.
अनुरध्यासु सर्वासु चत्वरेषु च कौरव। बलं बभूव राजेन्द्र प्रभूतगजवाजिमत्
O Kaurava, in all the crossroads and squares, the army stood, O king, filled with many elephants and horses.
दत्तवेतनभक्तं च दत्तायुधपरिच्छदम्। कृतोपधानं च तदा बलमासीद्विशांपते
That army, O lord of men, had received their wages and food, their weapons and equipment were supplied, and their bedding was arranged.
न कृप्यवेतनी कश्चिन्न चातिक्रान्तवेतनी। नानुग्रहभृतः कश्चिन्न चादृष्टपराक्रमः
No one was unpaid, nor had anyone received excess wages; no one was favored unduly, nor was there any untested in valor.
एवं सुविहिता राजन्द्वारका भूरिदक्षिणैः। आहुकेन सुगुप्ता च राज्ञा राजीवलोचन
Thus, O king, Dvaraka was well administered with generous gifts, and well protected by Ahuka, the lotus-eyed king.
तां तूपयातो राजेन्द्र साल्वः सौभपतिस्तदा। प्रभूतनरनागेन बलेनोपविवेश ह
Then, O king, Salva, lord of Saubha, approached and encamped with a great force of men and elephants.
समे निविष्टां सा सेना प्रभूतसलिलाशये। चतुरङ्गबलोपेता साल्वराजाभिपालिता
That army, stationed on level ground with abundant water, was equipped with fourfold forces and guarded by King Salva.
