With arms raised, at the vast Badari, O Madhusudana, you stood on one foot, subsisting on air, for a hundred years.
Clad in a black antelope skin, emaciated, with veins showing, you, O Krishna, dwelt on the Sarasvati during the twelve-year sacrifice.
And then, reaching the sacred Prabhasa, revered by the virtuous, there, O Krishna of great energy, you spent a divine thousand years.
There, standing on one foot, steadfast in discipline for the sake of the world's order, so Vyasa told me, you remained.
You are the knower of the field in all beings, O Keśava, the beginning and the end; you are the foundation of austerities, O Kṛṣṇa, and you are the eternal sacrifice.
You are the creator of yoga, O Hṛṣīkeśa, the eternal founder of Sāṃkhya; you are the essence of all disciplines and the cause of restraint.
Having slain Naraka on earth and brought back the jeweled earrings, you first released the sacrificial horse, O Kṛṣṇa.
Having performed that deed for the worlds, O bull among men, conqueror of all realms, you slew in battle all the assembled Daityas and Dānavas.
Then, having conferred the lordship of all beings upon the husband of Śacī, you manifested among humans, O mighty-armed Keśava.
Thus, becoming Nārāyaṇa, you were Hari, O scorcher of foes—Brahmā, Soma, Sūrya, Dharma, Dhātṛ, Yama, and Fire.
You are Vāyu, Vaiśravaṇa, Rudra, Time, space, earth, the directions; you are the unborn, the teacher of moving and unmoving beings, the creator, O supreme person.
With sacrifices beginning with Turāyaṇa, and with gifts of abundant wealth, you, O Kṛṣṇa of great splendor, performed sacrifices in the Citraratha forest.
Hundreds and hundreds of thousands of pieces of gold, O Janārdana, you gave in each of those sacrifices, fully and generously.
Having become the son of Aditi, O joy of the Yadus, you are known as Viṣṇu, the mighty one, younger brother of Indra.
Becoming a child, O scorcher of foes, you traversed heaven, space, and earth in three strides by your radiance, O Kṛṣṇa.
Having reached heaven and the sky, standing in the chariot of the sun, you outshone the sun itself by your own brilliance, O soul of all beings.
In those thousands of manifestations, O mighty one, you slew by the hundreds the Asuras who delighted in unrighteousness, O Kṛṣṇa.
The Maukhās were destroyed, the bonds cut, Niśumbha and Naraka were slain; you made the path to the city of Prāgjyotiṣa safe once more.
Jārūthya, Āhuti, Krātha, Śiśupāla with the kings, Jarāsandha, Śaibya, and Śatadhanvan were all vanquished by you.
Thus, with a chariot resounding like thunder and shining with solar splendor, you seized Rukmiṇī, the Bhaiṣmī, in battle, defeating Rukmin.
Indradyumna was slain in anger, the Yavana and Kaśerumān as well; the lord of Saubha, Śālva, was killed by you, and Saubha was destroyed.
Thus these were slain in battle; now hear of others as well: on the Irāvatī, the Bhoja, equal to Kārtavīrya in battle, and Gopati and Tālaketu were both struck down by you.
And you, Janardana, having made that blessed, sage-beloved city of Dvaraka your own, will cause the ocean to be traversed.
Neither anger nor envy nor falsehood, O slayer of Madhu, nor cruelty, nor unrighteousness, O descendant of Dasharha, abides in you.
As you sat in the midst of the sanctuary, shining with your own brilliance, all the sages approached you, O Acyuta, and sought protection.
At the end of the age, O slayer of Madhu, you withdraw all beings into yourself, making the world your own, O scorcher of foes.
At the beginning of the age, O descendant of Vrishni, from the lotus of your navel was born Brahma, the teacher of the moving and unmoving, by whom this entire world exists; to slay him, the terrible demons Madhu and Kaitabha arose.
Seeing their transgression, as you, Hari, grew angry, from your forehead was born Shambhu, the three-eyed, trident-bearing one.
Thus, these two lords of the gods also arose from your body; both act according to your command—so Narada has told me.
So too, O Narayana, in ancient times you performed a great sacrifice with abundant gifts, O Krishna, in the forest of Caitraratha.
