तस्मिन्हते तोयदतुल्यरूपे कृष्णां पुरस्कृत्य नरेन्द्रपुत्राः। भीमं प्रशस्याथ गुणैरनेकै- र्हृष्टास्ततो द्वैतवनाय जग्मुः
When that one, whose form was like a rain-cloud, was slain, the sons of the king, with Krishna at their head, joyfully praised Bhima with many virtues and then set out for the Dvaita forest.
एवं विनिहतः सङ्ख्ये किर्मोरो मनुजाधिप। भीमेन वचनात्तस् धर्मराजस्य कौरव
Thus was Kirmira slain in battle by Bhima, O king of men, at the command of Dharmaraja, O Kaurava.
ततो निष्कष्टकं कृत्वा वनं तदयराजितः। द्रौपद्या सह धर्मज्ञो वसतिं तामुवास ह
Then, having cleared the forest of danger, the righteous one dwelt there with Draupadi, free from fear.
समाश्वास्य च ते सर्वे द्रौपदीं भरतर्षभाः। प्रहृष्टमनसः प्रीत्या प्रसशंसुर्वृकोदरम्
Having comforted Draupadi, the best of the Bharatas, their hearts gladdened with affection, praised Vrikodara.
भीमबाहुबलोत्पिष्टे विनष्टे राक्षसे ततः। विविशुस्ते वनं वीराः क्षेमं निहतकण्टकम्
After the Rakshasa was destroyed by Bhima's mighty arms, the heroes entered the forest, now safe and free of obstacles.
स मया गच्छता मार्गे विनिकीर्णो भयावहः। वने महति दुष्टात्मा दृष्टो भीमबलाद्धतः
As I was traveling on the path, I saw that wicked soul, terrifying and slain by Bhima's strength, lying scattered in the great forest.
तत्राश्रौषमहं चैतत्कर्म भीमस् भारत। ब्राह्मणानां कथयतां ये तत्रासन्समागताः
There I heard this deed of Bhima, O Bharata, as it was being recounted by the Brahmanas who had gathered there.
एवं विनिहतं सङ्ख्ये किर्मीरं रक्षसां वरम्। श्रुत्वा ध्यानपरो राजा निशश्वासार्तवत्तदा
When he heard that Kirmira, the foremost of the Rakshasas, had been slain in battle in this way, the king, absorbed in thought, sighed deeply in his distress.
भोजाः प्रव्रजिताञ्श्रुत्वा वृष्णयश्चान्धकैः सह। पाण्डवान्दुःखसंतप्तान्समाजग्मुर्महावने
When the Bhojas, along with the Vrishnis and Andhakas, heard that the Pandavas had gone into exile and were tormented by suffering, they came together to the great forest.
पाञ्चालस्य च दायादो धृष्टकेतुश्च चेदिपः। केकयाश्च महावीर्या भ्रातरो लोकविश्रुताः
The heir of the Panchalas, Dhrishtaketu the king of the Cedis, and the mighty brothers of the Kekayas, renowned throughout the world,
वने द्रष्टुं ययुः पार्थान्क्रोधामर्षसमन्विताः। गर्हयन्तो धार्तराष्ट्रान्किं कुर्म इति चाब्रुवन्
Went into the forest to see the sons of Pritha, filled with anger and indignation, reproaching the sons of Dhritarashtra and saying, 'What shall we do?'
वासुदेवं पुरस्कृत्य सर्वे ते क्षत्रियर्षभाः। परिवार्योपविविशुर्धर्मराजं युधिष्ठिरम्। अभिवाद्य कुरुश्रेष्ठं विषण्णः केशवोऽब्रवीत्
All those foremost of Kshatriyas, with Vasudeva at their head, surrounded and sat down near King Yudhishthira the Just; after greeting the best of the Kurus, the sorrowful Kesava spoke.
दुर्योधनस्य कर्णस् शकुनेश्च दुरात्मनः। दुःशासनचतुर्थानां भूमिः पास्यति शोणितम्
The earth shall drink the blood of Duryodhana, Karna, the wicked Shakuni, and Duhshasana, the fourth among them.
एतान्निहत्य समरे ये च तेषां पदानुगाः। तांश्च सर्वान्विनिर्जित्य सहितान्स नराधिपान्
Having slain these in battle, and all their followers, and having conquered all those allied kings,
ततः सर्वेऽभिषिञ्चामो धर्मराजं युधिष्ठिरम्। निकृत्याऽभिचरन्वध्य एष धर्मः सनातनः
Then we shall anoint Yudhishthira the Just as king; this is the eternal law, that one who acts with deceit is not to be spared.
पार्तानामभिषङ्गेण तथा क्रुद्धं जनार्दनम्। अर्जुनः शमयामास दिधक्षन्तमिव प्रजाः
When Janardana was thus enraged on behalf of the sons of Pritha, Arjuna calmed him, as if restraining a fire about to consume the people.
संक्रुद्धं केशवं दृष्ट्वा पूर्वदेवेषु फल्गुनः। कीर्तयामास कर्माणि सत्यकीर्तेर्महात्मनः
Seeing Kesava so angered, Phalguna began to recount the deeds of the great-souled Satyakirti among the ancient gods.
पुरुषस्याप्रमेयस्य सत्यस्यामिततेजसः। प्रजापतिपतेर्विष्णोर्लोकनाथस्य धीमतः
Of that immeasurable, truthful, and infinitely radiant being—Vishnu, lord of creatures, master of the worlds, and wise—
दशवर्षसहस्राणि यत्रसायंगृहो मुनिः। व्यचरस्त्वं पुरा कृष्ण पर्वते गन्धमादने
For ten thousand years, you, O Krishna, once wandered as a sage with evening rites, on Mount Gandhamadana.
दशवर्षसहस्राणि दशवर्षशतानि च। पुष्करेष्ववसः कृष्णं त्वमपो भक्षयन्पुरा
For ten thousand years and a hundred decades more, you once dwelt at Pushkara, O Krishna, subsisting on water alone.
ऊर्ध्वबाहुर्विशालायां बदर्यां मधुसूदन। अतिष्ठ एकपादेन वायुभक्षः शतं समाः
With arms raised, at the vast Badari, O Madhusudana, you stood on one foot, subsisting on air, for a hundred years.
कृष्णाजिनोत्तरासङ्गः कृशो धमनिसंततः। आसीः कृष्ण सरस्वत्यां सत्रेद्वादशवार्षिके
Clad in a black antelope skin, emaciated, with veins showing, you, O Krishna, dwelt on the Sarasvati during the twelve-year sacrifice.
प्रभासमप्यथासाद्य तीर्थं पुण्यजनार्चितम्। तत्र कृष्ण महातेजा दिव्यं वर्षसहस्रकम्
And then, reaching the sacred Prabhasa, revered by the virtuous, there, O Krishna of great energy, you spent a divine thousand years.
आतिष्ठस्त्वमथैकेन पादेन नियमस्थितः। लोकप्रवृत्तिहेतोस्त्वमिति व्यासो ममाब्रवीत्
There, standing on one foot, steadfast in discipline for the sake of the world's order, so Vyasa told me, you remained.
क्षेत्रज्ञः सर्वभूतानामादिरन्तश्च केशवं। निधानं तपसां कृष्ण यज्ञस्त्वं च सनातनः
You are the knower of the field in all beings, O Keśava, the beginning and the end; you are the foundation of austerities, O Kṛṣṇa, and you are the eternal sacrifice.
योगकर्ता हृषीकेशः सांख्यकर्ता सनातनः। शीलस्त्वं सर्वयोगानां करणं नियमस्य च
You are the creator of yoga, O Hṛṣīkeśa, the eternal founder of Sāṃkhya; you are the essence of all disciplines and the cause of restraint.
निहत्य नरकं भौममाहृत्य मणिकुण्डले। प्रथमोत्पादितं कृष्ण मेध्यमश्वमवासृजः
Having slain Naraka on earth and brought back the jeweled earrings, you first released the sacrificial horse, O Kṛṣṇa.
कृत्वातत्कर्म लोकानामृषभः सर्वलोकजित्। अवधीस्त्वं रणे सर्वान्समेतान्दैत्यदानवान्
Having performed that deed for the worlds, O bull among men, conqueror of all realms, you slew in battle all the assembled Daityas and Dānavas.
ततः सर्वेश्वरत्वं च संप्रदाय शचीपतेः। मानुषेषु महाबाहो प्रादुर्भूतोऽसि केशव
Then, having conferred the lordship of all beings upon the husband of Śacī, you manifested among humans, O mighty-armed Keśava.
स त्वं नारायणो भूत्वा हरिरासीः परंतप। ब्रह्मा सोमश्च सूर्यश्च धर्मो धाता यमोऽनलः
Thus, becoming Nārāyaṇa, you were Hari, O scorcher of foes—Brahmā, Soma, Sūrya, Dharma, Dhātṛ, Yama, and Fire.
