Trees fell upon their heads and shattered in many pieces, just as lotus petals are scattered by two intoxicated elephants.
Many trees became battered and broken, strewn about like strips of bark, resounding throughout the great forest.
That tree-battle lasted for a moment, O best of Bharatas, between the chief of Rakshasas and the foremost of men.
Then the Rakshasa, enraged, lifted a stone and hurled it at Bhima, who stood firm in battle, and Bhimasena staggered.
The Rakshasa, made dull by the stone's blow, circled around, his arms flailing like Svarbhanu obscuring the sun.
The two, grappling each other and dragging one another, shone forth, both grown fierce like mighty bulls.
Between them arose a tumultuous, dreadful struggle, as if between two proud tigers fighting with claws and fangs.
Because of Duryodhana's insults, his own arm-strength, and seeing Krishna's arrival, Vrikodara's vigor increased.
Then, enraged, he struck with his arms and seized him, like an elephant breaking open the mouth of another elephant with its tusks.
And that powerful Rakshasa also seized him in turn; but Bhimasena, foremost of the strong, dragged him with his might.
From the crushing of their arms, as the two mighty ones grappled, a terrible sound arose in battle, like the cracking of bamboo.
Then Vrikodara, with a sudden force, swung him violently in the middle, just as a fierce wind shakes a tree.
Grasped by Bhima, the strongest in battle, the weakened Rakshasa struggled as best he could and dragged at the Pandava.
Seeing him exhausted, Vrikodara bound him with his arms, as one ties a beast with a rope.
Roaring loudly, his voice broken and wild, the mighty one spun him around for a long time, as he thrashed, senseless.
Perceiving the Rakshasa losing heart, the son of Pandu seized him swiftly with both arms and killed him like a beast at the slaughter.
Mounting the wicked Rakshasa at the waist, Vrikodara pressed his throat with his hands and crushed him with his knee.
Then, with all his limbs shattered and his fierce eyes rolling, he whirled him on the ground and spoke these words:
O sinner among Hidimba's kin, you will not wipe away your tears; you have now gone to the abode of Yama.
Having spoken thus, the best of men, his mind seized by anger, released the Rakshasa's lifeless, thrashing body, his garments and ornaments fallen away.
When that one, whose form was like a rain-cloud, was slain, the sons of the king, with Krishna at their head, joyfully praised Bhima with many virtues and then set out for the Dvaita forest.
Thus was Kirmira slain in battle by Bhima, O king of men, at the command of Dharmaraja, O Kaurava.
Then, having cleared the forest of danger, the righteous one dwelt there with Draupadi, free from fear.
Having comforted Draupadi, the best of the Bharatas, their hearts gladdened with affection, praised Vrikodara.
After the Rakshasa was destroyed by Bhima's mighty arms, the heroes entered the forest, now safe and free of obstacles.
As I was traveling on the path, I saw that wicked soul, terrifying and slain by Bhima's strength, lying scattered in the great forest.
There I heard this deed of Bhima, O Bharata, as it was being recounted by the Brahmanas who had gathered there.
When he heard that Kirmira, the foremost of the Rakshasas, had been slain in battle in this way, the king, absorbed in thought, sighed deeply in his distress.
When the Bhojas, along with the Vrishnis and Andhakas, heard that the Pandavas had gone into exile and were tormented by suffering, they came together to the great forest.
The heir of the Panchalas, Dhrishtaketu the king of the Cedis, and the mighty brothers of the Kekayas, renowned throughout the world,
