तथेत्युक्त्वाऽब्रुवन्सर्वे यथा नो वदसेऽनघ। त्वं पितृव्यः पितृसमो वयं च त्वत्परायणाः
Having said 'so be it,' all replied, 'As you instruct us, O blameless one. You are our uncle, equal to our father, and we are devoted to you.'
यथाऽऽज्ञापयसे विद्वंस्त्वं हि नः परमो गुरुः। यच्चान्यदपि कर्तव्यं तद्विधत्स्व महामते
As you command, O wise one, for you are our supreme teacher. Whatever else must be done, direct that, O great-minded one.
युधिष्ठिर विजानीहि ममेदं भरतर्षभ। नाधर्मेण जितः कश्चिद्व्यथते वै पराजये
Yudhishthira, know this from me, O bull among Bharatas: No one conquered by unrighteousness suffers distress in defeat.
त्वं वै धर्मं विजानीषे युद्धे जेता धनञ्जयः। हन्ताऽरीणां भीमसेनो नकुलस्त्वर्थसङ्ग्रही
You understand dharma; Dhananjaya will be victorious in battle; Bhimasena will slay enemies; Nakula will gather wealth.
संयन्ता सहदेवस्तु धौम्यो ब्रह्मविदुत्तमः। धर्मार्थकुशला चैव द्रौपदी धर्मचारिणी
Sahadeva will restrain; Dhaumya is the foremost knower of Brahman; and Draupadi is skilled in dharma and artha, and follows righteousness.
अन्योन्यस्य प्रियाः सर्वे तथैव प्रियदर्शनाः। परैरभेद्याः सन्तुष्टाः को वोन न स्पृहयेदिह
All are dear to one another and pleasing to behold; unbreakable by outsiders, content—who here would not desire you?
एष वै सर्वकल्याणः समाधिस्तव भारत। नैनं शत्रुर्विषहते शक्रेणापि समोऽप्युत
This is your all-auspicious resolve, O Bharata. No enemy can withstand it, not even one equal to Indra.
हिमवत्यनुशिष्टोऽसि मेरुसावर्णिना पुरा। द्वैपायनेन कृष्णेन नगरे वारणावते
You were instructed by Himavat, by Meru's golden-hued one, by Krishna Dvaipayana in the city of Varanavata.
भृगुतुङ्गे च रामेण दृष्टद्वत्यां च शम्भुना। अश्रौषीरसि तस्यापि महर्षेरञ्जनं प्रति
By Rama at Bhrigu's peak, by Shambhu at Drishtadvati—you heard from that great sage regarding Anjana.
कल्माषीतीरसंस्थस्य गतस्त्वं शिष्यतां भृगोः। द्रष्टा सदा नारदस्ते धौम्यस्तेऽयं पुरोहितः
You went as a disciple to Bhrigu, who dwells at the bank of Kalmashi; Narada always sees you; Dhaumya is your priest.
माहासीः साम्पराये त्वं बुद्धिं तामृषिपूजिताम्। पुरूरवसमैलं त्वं बुद्ध्या जयसि पाण्डव
You possess great blessings in battle, that wisdom honored by sages; with that wisdom, O Pandava, you surpass Pururavas and Ila.
शक्त्या जयसि राज्ञोऽन्यानृषीन्धर्गोपसेवया। ऐन्द्रे जये धृतमना याम्ये कोपविधारणे
By your power you conquer other kings, by serving sages; in Indra's victory you are resolute, in Yama's you restrain anger.
तथा विसर्गे कौबेरे वारुणे कोपविधारणे।। आत्मप्रदानं सौम्यत्वमद्भ्यश्चैवोपजीवनम्
Likewise, in Kubera's domain, in Varuna's, you restrain anger; you give yourself, show gentleness, and live from the waters.
भूमेः क्षमा च तेजश्च समग्रं सूर्यमण्डलात्। वायोर्बलं प्राप्नुहि त्वं भूतेभ्यश्चात्मसम्पदम्
From the earth, patience and brilliance, all from the solar orb; from the wind, gain strength, and from beings, attain self-possession.
अगदं वोऽस्तु भद्रं वो द्रष्टाऽस्मि पुनरागतान्। आपद्धर्मार्थकृच्छ्रेषु सर्वकार्येषु वा पुनः
May you be free from disease, may you have welfare; I will see you when you return. In times of distress, in matters of dharma and artha, or in any work, again.
यथावत्प्रतिपद्येथाः काले काले युधिष्ठिर। आपृष्टोऽसीह कौन्तेय स्वस्ति प्राप्नुहि भारत
Act as is proper, at each time, O Yudhishthira. You are now dismissed, O son of Kunti; may you prosper, O Bharata.
कृतार्थं स्वस्मिमन्तं त्वां द्रक्ष्यामः पुनरागतम्। न हि वो वृजिनं किञ्चिद्वेद कश्चित्पुराकृतम्
We will see you fulfilled and content when you return. No one knows of any past misfortune done by you.
एवमुक्तस्तथेत्युक्त्वा पाण्डवः सत्यविक्रमः। भीष्मद्रोणौ नमस्कृत्य प्रातिष्ठत युधिष्ठिरः
Thus addressed, the truthful Pandava replied 'so be it,' and, bowing to Bhishma and Drona, Yudhishthira departed.
ततः सम्प्रस्थिते तत्र धर्मराजे तदा नृप। जनाः समन्ताद्द्रष्टुं तं समारुरुहुरातुराः
Then, as King Yudhishthira set out, the people gathered from all sides to see him, their hearts troubled.
ततः प्रासादवर्याणि विमानशिखराणि च। गोपुराणि च सर्वाणि वृक्षानन्यांश्च सर्वशः
They climbed upon the finest palaces, the towers of the mansions, all the gateways, and every tree they could find.
अथाधिरुह्य सस्त्रीका उदासीना व्यलोकयन्। न हि रथ्यास्तदा शक्या गन्तुं ताश्च जनाकुलाः
Ascending with their wives, the onlookers gazed in silence; the streets were so crowded with people that passage was impossible.
आरुह्य स्मानतास्तत्र दीनाः पश्यन्ति पाण्डवान्। पदातिं वर्जितच्छत्रं चेलभूषणवर्जितम्
Climbing up, those distressed ones watched the Pandavas, seeing the prince walking without umbrella, without ornaments.
वल्कलाजिनसंवीतं पार्थं दृष्ट्वा जनास्तदा। ऊचुर्बहुविधा वाचो भृशोपहतचेतसः
When the people saw Partha clad in bark and antelope skin, they spoke many words, their minds deeply afflicted.
यं यान्तमनुयाति स्म चतुरङ्गबलं महत्। तमेकं कृष्णया सार्धमनुगच्छन्ति पाण्डवाः
He whom a great fourfold army once followed as he departed, now the Pandavas follow him alone, together with Krishna.
चत्वारो भ्रातरश्चैव धौम्यश्चैव पुरोहितः। भीमार्जुनौ वारयित्वा निकृत्या बद्धकार्मुकौ
The four brothers and the priest Dhaumya, Bhima and Arjuna restrained, their bows bound by deceit.
धर्म एवास्थितो येन त्यक्त्वा राज्यं महात्मना। या न शक्या पुरा द्रष्टुं भूतैराकाशगैरपि
He who, established in righteousness, abandoned the kingdom with a great soul—whom even beings of the sky could not once behold.
तामद्य कृष्णां पश्यन्ति राजमार्गगता जनाः। अङ्गरागोचितां कृष्णां रक्तचन्दनसेविनीम्
Now the people on the royal road see Krishna, who was accustomed to fragrant ointments and red sandalwood.
वर्षमुष्णं च शीतं च नेष्यत्याशु विवर्णताम्। अद्य नूनं पृथा देवी सत्यमाविश्य भाषते
The heat and cold will soon rob her of color; today, surely, Queen Pritha speaks the truth.
पुत्रान्स्नुषां च देवी तु द्रष्टुमद्याथ नार्हति। निर्गुणस्यापि पुत्रस्य कथं स्याहुः स्वदर्शनम्
The queen ought not to see her sons and daughter-in-law today; how could she witness her son, even one without virtue?
किम्पुनर्यस्य लोकोऽयं जितो वृत्तेन केवलम्। आनृशंस्यमनुक्रोशो धृतिः शीलं दमः शमः
What then of him, whose conduct alone has conquered the world—compassion, kindness, fortitude, character, restraint, and calm?
