उपादाय तु पाणिभ्यामङ्गदं नाम पर्वतम्। सद्रुमं व्यसृजच्छक्रो जिघांसुः श्वेतवाहनम्
Then Shakra, wishing to slay the white-steeded one, lifted with his hands the mountain named Angada, with its trees, and hurled it.
ततोऽर्जुनो वेगवद्भिर्ज्वलमानैरजिह्यगैः। बाणैर्विध्वंसयामास गिरिराजं सहस्रधा
Thereupon Arjuna shattered the king of mountains into a thousand pieces with blazing, swift, serpent-like arrows.
शक्रं च पातयामास शरैः पार्थो महान्युधि। ततः शक्रो महाराज रणे वीरं धनञ्जयम्
In that great battle, Partha struck down Shakra with his arrows; then, O king, Shakra saw Dhananjaya as a hero on the field.
ज्ञात्वा जेतुमशक्यं तं तेजोबलसमन्वितम्। परां प्रीति ययौ तत्र पुत्रशौर्येण वासवः
Realizing that he could not conquer him, endowed as he was with energy and strength, Vasava thereupon felt supreme joy at his son’s valor.
तदा तत्र न तस्यास्ति दिवि कश्चिन्महायशाः। समर्थो निर्जये राजन्नपि साक्षात्प्रजापतिः
At that time, O king, there was no one in heaven, not even Prajapati himself, famed as he was, who could defeat him.
ततः पार्थः शरैर्हत्वा यक्षराक्षसपन्नगान्। दीप्ते चाग्नौ महातेजाः पातयामास सन्ततम्
Then Partha, of great brilliance, struck down Yakshas, Rakshasas, and serpents with his arrows, casting them continually into the blazing fire.
प्रतिषेधयितुं पार्थं न शेकुस्तत्र केचन। दृष्ट्वा निवारितं शक्रं दिवि देवगणैः सह
No one there was able to restrain Partha, seeing that Shakra himself, with the hosts of gods, had been checked.
यथा सुपर्णः सोमार्थं विबुधानजयत्पुरा। तथा जित्वा सुरान्पार्थस्तर्पयामास पावकम्
Just as Suparna once conquered the gods for the sake of Soma, so did Partha, having vanquished the gods, satisfy Agni.
ततोऽर्जुनः स्ववीर्येण तर्पयित्वा विभावसुम्। रथं ध्वजं च सहयं दिव्यानस्त्रांश्च पाण्डवः
Then Arjuna, by his own prowess, having gratified Vibhavasu, the Pandava received a chariot, a banner, horses, and divine weapons.
गाण्डीवं च धनुः श्रेष्ठं तूणी चाक्षयसायकौ। एतान्यपि च बीभत्सुर्लेभे कीर्ति च भारत
Bibhatsu also obtained Gandiva, the foremost bow, inexhaustible quivers, and, O Bharata, fame as well.
भूयोऽपि शृणु राजेन्द्र पार्थो गत्वोत्तरां दिशम्। विजित्य नववर्षांश्च सपुरांश्च सपर्वतान्
Hear further, O king: Partha, having gone to the northern direction, conquered the nine Varshas, with their cities and mountains.
जम्बुद्वीपं वशे कृत्वा सर्वं तद्भरतर्षभ। बलाज्जित्वा नृपान्सर्वान्करे चविनिवेश्य च
Having brought all of Jambudvipa under his control, O bull of the Bharatas, he subdued all the kings by force and made them pay tribute.
रत्नान्यादाय सर्वाणि गत्वा चैव पुनः पुरीम्। ततो ज्येष्ठं महात्मानं धर्मराजं युधिष्ठिरम्। राजसूयं क्रतुश्रेष्ठं कारयामास भारत
Taking all the gems, he returned again to the city; then, O Bharata, he caused his noble elder brother, king Yudhishthira, to perform the Rajasuya, the foremost of sacrifices.
स तान्यन्यानि कर्माणि कृतवानर्जुनः पुरा। अर्जुनेन समो वीर्ये त्रिषु लोकेषु न क्वचित्
Thus Arjuna performed those and other deeds of old; in all the three worlds, there is none equal to Arjuna in prowess.
देवदानवयक्षाश्च पिशाचोरगराक्षसाः। भीष्मद्रोणादयः सर्वे कुरवश्च महारथाः
Even the gods, demons, yakshas, spirits, serpents, and rakshasas, all the mighty warriors like Bhishma and Drona, and the great chariot-warriors of the Kuru clan—
लोके सर्वनृपाश्चैव वीराश्चान्ये धनुर्धराः। एते पार्थं रणे युक्ताः प्रतियोद्धुं न शक्नुयुः
—and all the kings of the world, as well as other heroic archers, even if united in battle, would not be able to withstand Partha.
अहं हि नित्यं कौरव्य फल्गुनं हृदि संस्थितम्। अपश्यं चिन्तयित्वा तं समुद्विग्नोऽस्मि तद्भयात्
For I, O Kaurava, always keep Phalguna in my heart; thinking of him, I am filled with anxiety and fear.
गृहे गृहे च पश्यामि तात पार्थमहं सदा। शरगाण्डीवसंयुक्तं पाशहस्तमिवान्तकम्
In every house, O dear one, I constantly see Partha, armed with his arrows and Gandiva, like Death himself holding a noose.
अपि पार्थसहस्राणि भीतः पश्यामि भारत। पार्थभूतमिदं सर्वं नगरं प्रतिभाति मे
Indeed, O Bharata, in my fear I see thousands of Parthas; the entire city appears to me as if it has become Partha.
पार्थमेव हि पश्यामि रहिते तात भारत। दृष्ट्वा स्वप्नगतं पार्थमुद्धमामि विचेतनः
O dear one, even in solitude I see only Partha, O Bharata; seeing Partha in dreams, I wake up bewildered.
अकारादीनि नामानि अर्जुनग्रस्तचेतसः। अश्वाक्षराम्बुजाश्चैव त्रासं सञ्जनयन्ति मे
The very first letters of words, the names, and even the syllables 'ashva,' 'aksha,' and 'ambuja'—all these, as my mind is seized by thoughts of Arjuna, fill me with dread.
नास्ति पार्थादृते तात परवीराद्भयं मम। प्रह्लादं वा बलिं वापि हन्याद्धि विजयो रणे
Except for Partha, O dear one, I have no fear of any other mighty hero; even Prahlada or Bali could be slain by Vijaya in battle.
तस्मात्तेन महाराज युद्धं नस्तात न क्षमम्। अहं तस्य प्रभावज्ञो नित्यं दुःखं वहामि च
Therefore, O great king, for this reason, war with him is not suitable for us; knowing his power, I constantly bear sorrow.
पुरा हि दण्डकारण्ये मारीचस्य यथा भयम्। भवेद्रामे महावीर्ये तथा पार्थे भयं मम
Just as Maricha once feared the mighty Rama in the Dandaka forest, so do I now fear Partha.
जानाम्येव महद्वीयं जिष्णोरेतद्दुरासदम्। एतद्वीरस्य पार्थस्य कार्षीस्त्वं तु विप्रियम्
I know well the great and unconquerable power of Jishnu; yet, O hero, you have acted against Partha's interests.
द्यूतं वा शस्त्रयुद्धं वा दुवाक्यं वा कथञ्चन। एतेष्वेवं कृते तस्य विग्रहश्चैव वो भवेत्
Whether it is dice, battle with weapons, or harsh words—if any of these are done, conflict with him will surely arise for you.
तस्मात्त्वं पुत्र पार्थेन नित्यं स्नेहेन वर्तय। यश्च पार्थेन सम्बन्धो वर्तते चेन्नरो भुवि
Therefore, my son, always act with affection toward Partha; and whoever maintains a relationship with Partha on earth—
तस्य नास्ति भयं किञ्चित्रिषु लोकेषु भारत। तस्मात्त्वं जिष्णुना वत्स नित्यं स्नेहेन वर्तय
—for him there is no fear at all in the three worlds, O Bharata; therefore, my child, always act with affection toward Jishnu.
द्यूते पार्थस्य कौरव्य मायया निकृतिः कृता। तस्माद्वि नो जयस्तात अन्योपायेन नो भवेत्
In the game of dice, O Kaurava, deceit was practiced against Partha by trickery; therefore, victory will not be ours, nor will it come by any other means.
उपायश्च न कर्तव्यः पाण्डवान्प्रति भारत। पार्थान्प्रति पुरा वत्स बहूपायाः कृतास्त्वया
Nor should any further schemes be devised against the Pandavas, O Bharata; in the past, my child, you have already made many attempts against Partha.
