At that time, Rudras, Maruts, Vasus, the Ashvins, Adityas, Sadhyas, celestial beings, Gandharvas, and other groups of gods, O Bharata, all assembled together.
All those gods, equipped with weapons and shining with their own brilliance, rushed forward, intent on slaying Dhananjaya, led by their lord.
All the great omens that are seen at the end of an age appeared there, O king, every portent manifesting.
Then all the hosts of gods charged toward Arjuna; seeing that divine army, he remained unperturbed.
Swiftly, Phalguna took up his sharp, swift arrows; gazing at Indra and the gods, he stood firm like Time at the hour of destruction.
Then all the gods, along with Indra, showered the human, O king, with volleys of arrows.
Immediately, the mighty Arjuna, seizing Gandiva, quickly repelled the arrows of the gods with his own volleys.
Again, all the enraged gods, possessing great strength, rained various weapons upon that mortal, O king, but Savyasachi stood firm.
Arjuna then cut apart those showers of weapons released by the gods, splitting them in two and three with his sharp arrows.
Again, Arjuna, now furious, with his bow drawn in a circle, sent sharp arrows all around at the groups of gods.
Then all the gods fought repeatedly with Arjuna; realizing that he could not be defeated in battle, they withdrew, O bull among Bharatas.
All the gods, afflicted by Arjuna's arrows, became peaceful; abandoning Indra and his elephant, they fled in every direction.
The Rudras and Gandharvas went east, the Maruts south; the Vasus and Ashvins, frightened, fled west.
The Adityas and Visvedevas fled northward; the Sadhyas, terrified, ascended upward, pondering his arrows.
Thus all the hosts of gods fled in every direction, repeatedly glancing back at Arjuna with his bow.
Seeing those groups of gods fleeing in battle, Indra, enraged and of great energy, then showered Arjuna with arrows.
Partha, though a human, struck Shakra, the lord of the gods.
Then the lord of the gods released a shower of stones; Arjuna, unyielding, countered that rain with his arrows.
Desiring to test Savyasacin’s great strength further, the king of the gods intensified that rain.
But the Pandava, too, with swift arrows, dissolved that fierce stone-rain, delighting the subduer of Paka.
Then Shakra, wishing to slay the white-steeded one, lifted with his hands the mountain named Angada, with its trees, and hurled it.
Thereupon Arjuna shattered the king of mountains into a thousand pieces with blazing, swift, serpent-like arrows.
In that great battle, Partha struck down Shakra with his arrows; then, O king, Shakra saw Dhananjaya as a hero on the field.
Realizing that he could not conquer him, endowed as he was with energy and strength, Vasava thereupon felt supreme joy at his son’s valor.
At that time, O king, there was no one in heaven, not even Prajapati himself, famed as he was, who could defeat him.
Then Partha, of great brilliance, struck down Yakshas, Rakshasas, and serpents with his arrows, casting them continually into the blazing fire.
No one there was able to restrain Partha, seeing that Shakra himself, with the hosts of gods, had been checked.
Just as Suparna once conquered the gods for the sake of Soma, so did Partha, having vanquished the gods, satisfy Agni.
Then Arjuna, by his own prowess, having gratified Vibhavasu, the Pandava received a chariot, a banner, horses, and divine weapons.
Bibhatsu also obtained Gandiva, the foremost bow, inexhaustible quivers, and, O Bharata, fame as well.
