जित्वा तु तान्महीपालान्सर्वान्कर्णपुरोगमान्। लेभे कृष्णां शुभां पार्थो युध्वा वीर्यबलात्तदा
Having conquered all those kings, with Karna at their head, Partha then won the blessed Krishna through his valor and strength in battle.
सर्वक्षत्रसमूहेषु अम्बां भीष्मो यथा पुरा। ततः कदाचिद्बीभत्सुस्तीर्ययात्रां ययौ स्वयम्
Just as Bhishma once took Amba from among all the assembled Kshatriyas, so too did Bibhatsu, at some time, set out alone on a journey of conquest.
अथोलूपीं शुभां तात नागराजसतां तदा। नागेष्वाप वराग्र्येषु प्रार्थितोऽथ यथा तथा
Then, O dear one, he was sought after by the foremost of the Nagas for the noble Ulupi, and so he took her among the best of the serpent maidens, as requested.
ततो गोदावरीं कृष्णां कावेरीं चावगाहत। तत्र पाण्ड्यं समासाद्य तस्य कन्यामवाप सः
Afterwards, he bathed in the Godavari, Krishna, and Kaveri rivers; there, meeting the king of the Pandyas, he obtained his daughter.
लब्ध्वा जिष्णुर्मुदं तत्र ततो याम्यां दिशं ययौ
Having gained joy there, Jishnu then proceeded toward the southern direction.
स दक्षिणं समुद्रान्तं गत्वा चाप्सरसां च वै। कुमारतीर्थमासाद्य मोक्षयामास चार्जुनः
He reached the southern ocean's end and the sacred place of the Apsaras; at Kumara-tirtha, Arjuna granted them release.
ग्राहरूपाश्च ताः पञ्च अतिशौर्येण वै बलात्। कन्यातीर्थं समभ्येत्य ततो द्वारवतीं ययौ
Those five, taking the form of crocodiles, by his great valor and force, approached Kanyatirtha; then he went to Dvaravati.
तत्र कृष्णनिदेशात्स सुभद्रां प्राप्य फल्गुनः। तामारोप्य रथोपस्थे प्रययौ स्वपुरीं प्रति
There, by Krishna's command, Phalguna obtained Subhadra; placing her on his chariot, he set out for his own city.
अथादाय गते पार्थे ते श्रुत्वा सर्वयादवाः। तमभ्यधावन्त्सङ्क्रुद्धाः सिंहव्याघ्रगणा इव
When Partha had departed with her, all the Yadavas, hearing of it, rushed upon him in great anger, like bands of lions and tigers.
प्रद्युम्नः कृतवर्मा च गदः सारणसात्यकी। आहुकश्चैव साम्बश्च चारुदेष्णो विदूरथः
Pradyumna, Kritavarma, Gada, Sarana, Satyaki, Ahuka, Samba, Charudeshna, and Viduratha,
अन्ये च यादवाः सर्वे बलदेवपुरोगमाः। एकमेव परे कृष्णं गजवाजिरथैर्युताः
And all the other Yadavas, led by Baladeva, with elephants, horses, and chariots, surrounded Krishna alone.
अथासाद्य वने यान्तं परिवार्य धनञ्जयम्। चक्रुर्युद्धं सुसङ्क्रुद्धा बहुकोट्यश्च यादवाः
Then, encountering Dhananjaya as he went through the forest, the many millions of Yadavas, greatly enraged, surrounded him and engaged in battle.
एक एव तु पार्थस्तैर्युद्धं चक्रे सुदारुणम्। तेन तेषां समं युद्धं मुहूर्तं प्रबभूव ह
But Partha alone fought a fierce battle with them; for a time, the fight between him and them was evenly matched.
ततः पार्थो रणे सर्वान्वारयित्वा शितैः शरैः। बलाद्विजित्य राजेन्द्र वीरस्तान्सर्वयादवान्। तां सुभद्रामथादाय शक्रप्रस्थं विवेश ह
Then, O king, Partha, the hero, repelled them all in battle with sharp arrows; overpowering all the Yadavas by force, he took Subhadra and entered Indraprastha.
भूयः शृणु महाराज फल्गुनस्य च साहसम्। ददौ स वह्नेर्बिभत्सुः प्रार्थितं खाण्डवं वनम्
Now hear again, O great king, of Phalguna's daring deed: Bibhatsu granted the Khandava forest, as requested, to Agni.
लब्धमात्रे तु तेनाथ भगवान्हव्यवाहनः। भक्षितुं खाण्डवं राजंस्तत्रस्थानुपचक्रमे
As soon as he obtained it, the divine Havyavahana began to consume the Khandava forest, O king, along with those who dwelled there.
ततस्तं भक्षयन्तं वै सव्यसाची विभावसुम्। रथा धन्वी शरान्गृह्य स कलापयुतः प्रभुः। पालयामास राजेन्द्र स्ववीर्येण महाबलः
Then Savyasachi, armed with bow and arrows and accompanied by his charioteer, protected blazing Vibhavasu as he devoured the forest, relying on his own great strength.
ततः श्रुत्वा महेनद्रस्तु मेघांस्तान्सन्दिदेश ह। तेनोक्ता मेघसङ्घास्ते ववर्षुरतिवृष्टिभिः
Hearing of this, the mighty Indra sent forth clouds; at his command, those masses of clouds poured down an excessive rain.
ततो मेघगाणान्पार्थः शरव्रातैः समान्ततः। खगमैर्वारयामास तदाश्चर्यमिवाभवत्
Then Arjuna repelled the masses of clouds on all sides with volleys of arrows; it was a marvel to behold.
वारितान्मेघसङ्घांश्च श्रुत्वा क्रुद्धः पुरन्दरः। पाण्डरं गजमास्थाय सर्वदेवगणैर्वृतः। ययौ पार्थेन संयोद्धुं रक्षार्थं खाण्डवस्य च
Hearing that the clouds had been dispersed, Indra became enraged; mounting his white elephant and surrounded by all the hosts of gods, he advanced to fight Arjuna and to protect Khandava.
रुद्राश्च मरुतश्चैव वसवश्चाश्विनौ तदा। आदित्याश्चैव साध्याश्च निश्वेदेवाश्च भारत। गन्धर्वाश्चैव सहिता अन्ये देवगणाश्च ये
At that time, Rudras, Maruts, Vasus, the Ashvins, Adityas, Sadhyas, celestial beings, Gandharvas, and other groups of gods, O Bharata, all assembled together.
ते सर्वे शस्त्रसम्पन्ना दीप्यमानाः स्वतेजसा। धनञ्जयं जिघांसन्तः प्रपेतुर्विबुधाधिपाः
All those gods, equipped with weapons and shining with their own brilliance, rushed forward, intent on slaying Dhananjaya, led by their lord.
युगान्ते यानि दृश्यन्ते निमित्तानि महान्त्यपि। सर्वाणि तत्र दृश्यन्ते निमित्तानि महीपते
All the great omens that are seen at the end of an age appeared there, O king, every portent manifesting.
ततो देवगमाः सर्वे पार्थं समभिदुद्रुवुः। असम्भ्रान्तस्तु तान्दृष्ट्वा स तां देवमयीं चमूम्
Then all the hosts of gods charged toward Arjuna; seeing that divine army, he remained unperturbed.
त्वरितः फल्गुनो गृह्य तीक्ष्णांस्तानाशुगांस्तदा। इन्द्रं देवांश्च सम्प्रेक्ष्य तस्थौ काल इवात्यये
Swiftly, Phalguna took up his sharp, swift arrows; gazing at Indra and the gods, he stood firm like Time at the hour of destruction.
ततो देवगणाः सर्वे बीभत्सुं सपुरन्दराः। अवाकिरञ्छरव्रातैर्मानुषं तं महीपते
Then all the gods, along with Indra, showered the human, O king, with volleys of arrows.
ततः पार्थो महातेजा गाण्डिवं गृह्य सत्वरः। वारयामास देवानां शरव्रातैः शरांस्तदा
Immediately, the mighty Arjuna, seizing Gandiva, quickly repelled the arrows of the gods with his own volleys.
पुनः क्रुद्धाः सुराः सर्वे मर्त्यं तं सुभहाबलाः। नानाशस्त्रैर्ववर्षुस्तं सव्यसाची महीपते
Again, all the enraged gods, possessing great strength, rained various weapons upon that mortal, O king, but Savyasachi stood firm.
तान्पार्थः शस्त्रवर्षान्वै विसृष्टान्विबुधैस्तदा। द्विधा त्रिधा स चिच्छेद स एव निशितैः शरैः
Arjuna then cut apart those showers of weapons released by the gods, splitting them in two and three with his sharp arrows.
पुनश्च पार्थः सङ्क्रुद्धो मण्डलीकृतकार्मुकः। देवसङ्घाञ्छरैस्तीक्ष्णैरर्पयन्वै समन्ततः
Again, Arjuna, now furious, with his bow drawn in a circle, sent sharp arrows all around at the groups of gods.
