यानक्षान्मन्यसे मूढ गान्धाराणां यशोहर। नैते ह्यक्षाः शिता वाणास्त्वयैते समरे धृताः
You fool, who think these dice are the glory of the Gandharas—these are not dice, but sharp arrows you hold in battle.
यथा चैवोक्तवान्भीमस्त्वामुद्दिश्य सबान्धवम्। कर्ताऽहं कर्मणा चास्य कुरुकार्याणि सर्वशः। यदि स्थस्यासि सङ्ग्रामे क्षत्रधर्मेण सौबल
Just as Bhima has declared, addressing you and your kin, so too shall I act, accomplishing all the deeds of the Kurus, if you stand in battle by the warrior's code, O son of Subala.
सहदेववचः श्रुत्वा नकुलोऽपि विशाम्पते। दर्शनीयतमो नॄणामिदं वचनमब्रवीत्
Hearing Sahadeva's words, Nakula, most handsome among men, also spoke these words:
सुतेयं यज्ञसेनस्य द्यूतेऽस्मिन्धृतराष्ट्रजैः। यैर्वाचः श्राविता रूक्षा धूर्तैर्दुर्योधनप्रियैः
This daughter of Yajnasena was staked in this game by the sons of Dhritarashtra, whose harsh words were uttered by cunning men devoted to Duryodhana.
धार्तराष्ट्रान्सुदुर्वृत्तान्मुमूर्षून्कालचोदितान्। दर्शयिष्यामि भूयिष्ठमहं वैवस्वतक्षयम्
I shall show the wicked sons of Dhritarashtra, who are ill-behaved and doomed by Time, the destruction of Yama in great measure.
उलूकं च दुरात्मानं सौबलस्य प्रियं सुतम्। हन्ताऽहमस्मि समरे मम शत्रुं नराधमम्
And Uluka, the evil-minded beloved son of Subala, my enemy and the lowest of men—I shall slay him in battle.
निदेशाद्धर्मराजस्य द्रौपद्याः पदवीं चरन्। नर्धार्तराष्टां पृथिवीं कर्तास्मि नचिरादिवा
By the command of the righteous king and following the path of Draupadi, I shall soon make the earth, oppressed by the sons of Dhritarashtra, resound.
यस्माच्चोरुं दर्शयसे यस्माच्चोरुं निरीक्षसे। तस्मात्तव ह्यधर्मिष्ठ ऊरौ मृत्युर्भविष्यति
Because you display and gaze upon your thighs so arrogantly, therefore, O most unrighteous one, death will come to your thighs.
यस्माच्चैवं क्लेशयति भ्राता ते मां दुरात्मवान्। तस्मादुधिरमेवास्य पास्यते वै वृकोदरः
And because your wicked brother torments me in this way, therefore Bhima will surely drink his blood.
इमं च पापिष्ठमतिं कर्णं समुतबान्धवम्। सामात्यं सपरीवारं हनिष्यति धनञ्जयः
This Karna, of most sinful mind, along with his kin, his ministers, and his retinue, will be slain by Dhananjaya.
क्षुद्रधर्मं नैकृतिकं शकुनिं पापचेतसम्। सहदेवो रणे क्रुद्धो हनिष्यति सबान्धवम्
Shakuni, of base conduct and wicked heart, will be slain in battle by the enraged Sahadeva, along with his kin.
एवमुक्ते तु वचने द्रौपद्या धर्मशीलया। ततोऽन्तरिक्षात्सुमहत्पुष्पवर्षमवापततम्
When these words were spoken by the righteous Draupadi, then from the sky a great shower of flowers fell.
तेषां तु वचनं श्रुत्वा नोचुस्तत्र सभासदः। अर्जुनस्य भयाद्राजन्नभून्निश्शब्दमत्र वै
Hearing their words, none of the assembly spoke, O King, and because of fear of Arjuna, there was silence there.
द्रौपद्या वचनं श्रुत्वा चुकोपाथ धनञ्जयः। स तदा क्रोधताम्राक्ष इदं वचनमब्रवीत्
Hearing Draupadi's words, Dhananjaya grew angry; his eyes reddened with rage, he spoke these words:
अयं तु मां वारयते धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः। इत्युक्त्वा क्रोधताम्राक्षो धनुरादाय वीर्यवान्
'It is Dharmaraja Yudhishthira who restrains me.' Having said this, his eyes red with anger, the mighty one took up his bow.
सव्यसाची समुत्पत्य ताञ्छत्रून्समुदैक्षत। उद्यतं फल्गुनं तत्र ददृशुः सर्वपार्थिवाः
The left-handed archer sprang up and looked upon those enemies; all the kings there beheld Phalguna with his weapon raised.
युगान्ते सर्वलोकांस्तु दहन्तमिव पावकम्। वीक्षमाणं धनुष्पामिं हन्तुकामं मुहुर्मुहुः
He gazed, bow in hand, like fire consuming all worlds at the end of an age, intent again and again on destruction.
हन्तुकामं पशून्क्रुद्धं रुद्रं दक्षक्रतौ यथा। तथाभूतं नरं दृष्ट्वा विषेदुस्तत्र मानवाः
Seeing that man, fierce as Rudra enraged at Daksha’s sacrifice, eager to slay, the people there were seized with terror.
धनञ्जयस्यव वीर्यज्ञा निराशा जीविते तदा। मृतभूता भवन्सर्वे नेत्रैरनिमिषैरिव
Knowing Dhanañjaya’s valor, all lost hope for their lives, as if already dead, their eyes unblinking.
अर्जुनं धर्मपुत्रं च समुदैक्षन्त पार्थिवाः। क्रुद्धं तदाऽर्जुनं दृष्ट्वा पृथिवी च चचाल ह
The kings looked upon Arjuna and Yudhishthira together; and seeing Arjuna enraged, even the earth trembled.
खेचराणि च भूतानि वित्रेसुर्वै भयार्दिताः। नादित्यो विरराजाथ नापि वान्ति च मारुताः
The beings who move in the sky, struck with fear, were terrified; the sun did not shine, nor did the winds blow.
न चन्द्रो न च नक्षत्रं द्यौर्दिशोन न विभान्ति ह। सर्वमाविद्धमभवज्जगत्स्थावरजङ्गमम्
Neither moon nor stars, nor sky nor directions appeared; all the world, moving and unmoving, seemed enveloped in darkness.
उत्पतन्स वभौ पार्तो दिवाकर इवाम्बरे
As he leapt up, Pārtha shone like the sun rising in the sky.
पार्थं दृष्ट्वा क्रुद्धं कालान्तकयमोपमम्। भीमसेनो मुदा युक्तो युद्धायैव मनो दधे
Seeing Pārtha, furious and resembling Death at the end of time, Bhīmasena rejoiced and fixed his mind on battle.
पाञ्चाली च ददर्शाथ सुसङ्क्रुद्धं धनञ्जयम्। हन्तुकामं रिपून्मर्वान्सुपर्णमिव पन्नगान्
And Pāñcālī beheld Dhanañjaya, deeply enraged, eager to slay his foes like Garuda attacking serpents.
दुष्प्रेक्षः सोऽभवत्क्रुद्धो युगान्ताग्निरिव ज्वलन्। तं दृष्ट्वा तेजसा युक्तं विव्यधुः पुरवासिनः
In his wrath he became hard to look upon, blazing like the fire at the end of the age; seeing him radiant with energy, the city-dwellers were struck with fear.
उत्पतन्तं तु वेगेन ततो दृष्ट्वा धनञ्जयम्। जग्राह स तदा राजा पुरुहूतो यथा हरिम्
But as Dhanañjaya rushed forward with speed, the king restrained him, as Indra would restrain Hari.
उवाच स घृणी ज्येष्ठो धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः। मा पार्थ साहसं कार्षीर्मा विनाशं गमेद्यशः
Then the compassionate eldest, King Yudhishthira, spoke: 'Do not act rashly, Pārtha, do not bring ruin to your fame.'
अहमेतान्पापकृतो द्यूतज्ञान्दग्धुमुत्सहे। कन्त्त्वसत्यगतिं दृष्ट्वा क्रोधो नाशमुपैति मे
'I could endure burning these wicked gamblers,' he said, 'but seeing the path of falsehood, my anger is destroyed.'
त्वमिमं जगतोऽर्थे वै कोपं संयच्छ पाण्डव
'For the sake of this world, Pandava, restrain your wrath.'
