Then Bhishma, Drona, and Vidura spoke: 'Let this be forgiven; all is expected of you.'
Three are said to be without wealth: a servant, a son, and a woman without independence; the wife of a servant, and the wife of one without wealth, O noble lady, all possessions of the servant are lacking in authority.
Enter the king’s household and serve; your remaining duty will be instructed here. All the sons of Dhritarashtra are your masters, not the sons of Pandu.
Choose another husband quickly, O beautiful one, since you do not obtain servitude by fate; among husbands, desire is not to be spoken of, but servitude is always known to you.
Nakula, Bhimasena, Yudhishthira, Sahadeva, and Arjuna have been defeated; you, daughter of Yajnasena, have become a slave, and your husbands, being defeated, are no longer yours.
What purpose does birth serve if one does not value effort and manliness? In the midst of the assembly, who, in the dice game, staked this daughter of Drupada?
Hearing this, Bhimasena, deeply enraged, breathed heavily in distress; bound by the king and the cords of righteousness, he burned with anger, his gaze bloodshot.
I do not grow angry at the son of the charioteer, O king; this is indeed the established law of servitude. Why should my enemies speak thus of me? You are not a goddess if you act unrighteously, O king.
Hearing Bhimasena’s words, King Duryodhana then addressed Yudhishthira, who was silent and insensible.
Bhima, Arjuna, and the twins stand under your command, O king; ask Krishna a question if you consider her unconquered.
Having spoken thus, the son of Karna, intoxicated with wealth, smiling, removed his own garment and looked at Draupadi.
Her thigh, resembling a banana stem, endowed with all marks, like an elephant’s trunk in form, possessed the dignity of a thunderbolt.
Having mocked Karna, Bhima, as if provoking him, exposed his left thigh to Draupadi as she watched.
Bhimasena, seeing this, widened his bloodshot eyes and spoke in the midst of the assembly, as if making his words resound.
Let Vrikodara not go to the same realm as his ancestors, unless in the great battle I shatter this thigh of yours with my mace.
From all the pores of the enraged Bhima, flames burst forth like fire from the hollows of a burning tree.
See the great fear arising from Bhimasena, O kings of the Pratip lineage, understand this; surely, a calamity ordained by fate has appeared among the Bharatas.
This excessive gambling has been committed by the Dhartarashtras, for you quarrel over a woman in the assembly; your prosperity and security are being destroyed, for the Kurus plot evil schemes.
The Kurus, knowing this dharma, should quickly act; when dharma is ruined, the assembly becomes corrupted. If the gambler had lost before, he would have become powerless and defeated.
Just as wealth won in a dream is not real, so I think for one who gambles without authority. Hearing the words of the king of Gandhara, the Kurus should not abandon dharma.
I stand firm in the words of Bhima, Arjuna, and the twins; they declare Yudhishthira powerless, and then you will release Draupadi, O Yajnaseni.
Previously, our king was the son of Kunti, the great-souled Dharmaraja; now, who is the lord, when he is defeated? All you Kurus, know this.
Dushasana, heed these spoken words: why delay, O hero? Take the daughter of Drupada away; enjoy her as you wish in the manner of a slave, O joy of the Kurus.
Then Shakuni, son of the king of Gandhara, said: Well done, Karna, mighty-armed one; let it be done as you wish.
Then Dushasana quickly began to drag the daughter of Drupada by force to bring her in; that wicked man pulled her, and then Panchali, of splendid complexion, cried out.
Save me, O Bhishma, Drona, Ashvatthama, and Kripa; save me, O Vidura, righteous and devoted to dharma.
Dhritarashtra, great king, save your daughter-in-law; Gandhari, O blessed one, all-knowing and all-seeing, save me, fearful and afflicted by Suyodhana.
O noble mother of heroes, why do you look upon me, a Yadava woman, suffering at the hands of the ignoble? Do not save your own daughter-in-law.
If, while I cry out, no one says anything, alas, I am ruined, of weak spirit, fallen under the power of Suyodhana.
Neither the Pandu king, nor dharma, nor the king of the gods, nor life, nor the Ashvins save your daughter-in-law. Fie, how wretched, if I, of poor fortune and devoted to my husband, must live.
