Yudhishthira, intoxicated by the madness of dice, was defeated by Duryodhana, and so, Draupadi, I am to bring you to the house of Dhritarashtra; I am to take you, O Yajnaseni, for this task.
How can you say this, Pratikami? What prince would stake his wife at dice? The king, deluded and maddened by the game, did nothing else deceitful but this.
When he did nothing else deceitful, then the Pandava, Ajatashatru, lost; first he staked his brothers, then himself, and then, O princess, you.
Go to the gambler in the assembly and ask, O charioteer’s son: whom did you lose first—yourself or me?
After learning this, return and then take me, O charioteer’s son; once I know the king’s intention, I will go, though distressed.
He went to the assembly and spoke these words of Draupadi to Yudhishthira, who stood among the kings: 'Draupadi asks you this question.'
'To whom do we belong? Whom did you lose first—yourself or me?'—thus Draupadi asks you.
But Yudhishthira, his mind bewildered and spirit gone, did not answer the charioteer, neither with good words nor with bad.
Let Panchali herself come here and ask this question; let everyone here hear her words and his reply.
He went to the royal palace, obedient to Duryodhana, and spoke to Draupadi, the charioteer Pratikami, as if distressed.
The assembly summons you, princess; I think a grave doubt has arisen among the Kauravas. He who does not bring you to the hall, princess, does not truly protect our prosperity.
Surely, the Ordainer has arranged it so that both the old and the young are touched by this contact; yet, in the world, He declared only one supreme dharma—may He, though hidden, bring us peace.
Therefore, let this righteousness not be abandoned, O Kauravas. Go to the assembly and ask my righteous question. Let those virtuous, wise, and foremost men decide for me; whatever they declare, I shall do.
Hearing the words of Yājñasenī, the charioteer went to the assembly and spoke them there. But all sat with faces downcast and said nothing, understanding Duryodhana's insistence.
Hearing of Duryodhana's intention, Yudhiṣṭhira, the bull among the Bharatas, sent the messenger, as approved by Draupadī.
Clad in a single garment, with her lower cloth, weeping and in her season, Pāñcālī was to come into the assembly and stand before her father-in-law.
Then, when the royal daughter entered the assembly, all the members would reproach Dhṛtarāṣṭra's son in their hearts.
The messenger, swift and wise, went to Kṛṣṇā's chamber and conveyed the firm decision of the righteous king.
The great-souled Pāṇḍavas, afflicted and overwhelmed by sorrow, their bodies burning with truth, could not utter a word.
Then, seeing their faces, King Duryodhana joyfully spoke to the charioteer: 'Bring Pṛtikāmin here at once; let the Kurus speak to her directly.'
Then the charioteer, obedient to him but fearful of Drupada's daughter's wrath, set aside his pride and again said to Kṛṣṇā, 'What shall I say to the assembly?'
This son of a charioteer, Duhśāsana, is of little sense and fears Bhīma; seize Yājñasenī yourself and bring her. What can her helpless rivals do to you?
Then, rising up with bloodshot eyes at his brother's command, the royal prince entered the quarters of the great warriors and addressed Draupadī, the royal princess.
'Come, come, Pāñcālī, O princess! See Duryodhana, who is shameless. Join the Kurus, O wide-eyed one; you have been won in the assembly by righteousness.'
Then, deeply distressed, she rose, wiped her pale face with her hand, and, in agony, fled toward the women of the aged king, the foremost of the Kurus.
Then Duhśāsana, roaring in anger, rushed at her with speed and seized the queen by her long, dark, wavy hair.
Those who had been sprinkled with mantra-purified water at the royal sacrifice, disregarding the valor of the Pāṇḍavas, were forcibly humiliated by Dhṛtarāṣṭra's son.
Seizing her by her exceedingly long hair, Duhśāsana dragged Kṛṣṇā, who seemed protected yet was unprotected, into the midst of the assembly, like the wind drags a plaintive plantain tree.
Kṛṣṇā, her body bent in shame, softly said, 'I am in my season, and have but one garment, O fool. It is not right for you, O ignoble one, to bring me to the assembly.'
Then, seizing her forcibly by her dark hair, Duhśāsana spoke to Kṛṣṇā, while Yājñasenī cried out for Kṛṣṇa, Arjuna, Bhīma, and Dharma to save her.
