Vidura, holding his head, seemed to lose his spirit; he sat with face downcast, sighing like a serpent.
Bāhlīka, Somadatta, Sañjaya son of Pratīpa, Droṇa's son, Bhūriśravā, and Yuyutsu, son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, all sat with faces turned downward, sighing like serpents.
But Dhṛtarāṣṭra, delighted, kept asking again and again, 'What has been won? What has been won?' and did not restrain his expression.
Karna rejoiced greatly along with Duḥśāsana and the others; but from the eyes of the other members of the assembly, tears fell.
Saubala, intoxicated with pride, struck the dice and, before the others, declared them defeated, saying only, 'Won! Won!'
Come, steward, bring Draupadī here—dear wife, esteemed by the Pāṇḍavas; let her sweep the hall, let her come quickly, and let her be among the slave-women of evil conduct.
You speak words like this, but you do not understand, bound as you are by the noose; hanging over the precipice, you do not know, and you provoke tigers like a deer, far too much.
Poisonous serpents, full of wrath, are upon your head; do not enrage them, O foolish one, do not go to the abode of Yama.
Kṛṣṇā does not deserve to become a slave; for she was staked by the king while she was not his to wager—this is my view.
This son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, like a flute given to one who destroys himself, brings ruin; for gambling leads to enmity and great fear, but he does not understand, intoxicated, the end that approaches.
Let there be no slanderer, no speaker of cruelty, nor should the lowly take what is supreme; one whose words cause another to tremble should not speak such things, for she will fall to an evil world.
Harsh words rise up and, struck from the mouth, bring sorrow day and night; they do not strike at the vital spots of others—let the wise not release them upon others.
A goat, it is said, swallows a sword, and when the sword falls, its own head is cut off on the ground; do not, in the same way, create terrible enmity with the sons of Pāṇḍu.
The sons of Pāṇḍu do not speak thus—whether to a forest-dweller, a householder, or an ascetic full of knowledge; only base men, like dogs, always speak in this way.
The dreadful gate of hell stands open, yet the son of Dhritarashtra does not realize it; many among the Kurus follow him, together with Duhshasana, at the rise of this game.
Gourds sink while stones float, and boats on water are ever bewildered; the deluded son of Dhritarashtra, intoxicated by the game, does not heed my words, though they are for his good.
Surely, the end for the Kurus will come—an utterly dreadful destruction that consumes all; the wise words of friends, though beneficial, are not heard—only greed continues to grow.
Saying, 'Shame on the charioteer!' in his arrogance and intoxication, the son of Dhritarashtra looked at Pratikami in the assembly and spoke to him in the midst of the elders.
You, Pratikami, bring Draupadi here; you need not fear the Pandavas. This charioteer only argues out of fear and never truly wishes for our prosperity.
Thus addressed, Pratikami the charioteer quickly departed, having heard the king’s command, and entered, like a dog before a lion, to approach the queen of the Pandavas.
Yudhishthira, intoxicated by the madness of dice, was defeated by Duryodhana, and so, Draupadi, I am to bring you to the house of Dhritarashtra; I am to take you, O Yajnaseni, for this task.
How can you say this, Pratikami? What prince would stake his wife at dice? The king, deluded and maddened by the game, did nothing else deceitful but this.
When he did nothing else deceitful, then the Pandava, Ajatashatru, lost; first he staked his brothers, then himself, and then, O princess, you.
Go to the gambler in the assembly and ask, O charioteer’s son: whom did you lose first—yourself or me?
After learning this, return and then take me, O charioteer’s son; once I know the king’s intention, I will go, though distressed.
He went to the assembly and spoke these words of Draupadi to Yudhishthira, who stood among the kings: 'Draupadi asks you this question.'
'To whom do we belong? Whom did you lose first—yourself or me?'—thus Draupadi asks you.
But Yudhishthira, his mind bewildered and spirit gone, did not answer the charioteer, neither with good words nor with bad.
Let Panchali herself come here and ask this question; let everyone here hear her words and his reply.
He went to the royal palace, obedient to Duryodhana, and spoke to Draupadi, the charioteer Pratikami, as if distressed.
