मम वित्तमसङ्ख्येयं यदहं वेद सौबल। अथ त्वं शकुने कस्माद्वित्तं समनुपृच्छसि
My wealth is immeasurable, as much as I know, O son of Subala. So why do you, Shakuni, ask me about my riches?
अयुतं प्रयुतं चैव शङ्कुं पद्मं तथार्बुदम्। खर्वं शङ्खं निखर्वं च महापद्मं च कोटयः
Ten thousand, one hundred thousand, a 'shanku', a 'padma', an 'arbuda', a 'kharva', a 'shankha', a 'nikharva', a 'mahapadma', and crores—
मध्यं चैव परार्धं च सपरं चात्र पण्यताम्। एतन्मम धनं राजंस्तेन दीव्याम्यहं त्वया
The middle, the 'parardha', and the 'sapara' are also counted here as stakes. This is my wealth, O King; with this I gamble with you.
एतच्छुत्वा व्यवसितो निकृतिं समुपाश्रितः। जितमित्येव शकुनिर्युधिष्ठिरमभाषत
Hearing this, resolved and embracing deceit, Shakuni declared to Yudhishthira, 'You are defeated.'
गवाश्वं बहुधेनूकमसङ्ख्येयमजाविकम्। यत्किञ्चिदनु पर्णाशां प्राक् सिन्धोरपि सौबल। एतन्मम धनं सर्वं तेन दीव्याम्यहं त्वया
Cows, horses, countless sheep and goats, whatever lies beyond the leaf-huts, even east of the Sindhu, O son of Subala—this is all my wealth; with this I gamble with you.
एतच्छुत्वा व्यवसितो निकृतिं समुपाश्रितः। जितमित्येव शकुनिर्युधिष्ठिरमभाषत
Hearing this, resolved and embracing deceit, Shakuni declared to Yudhishthira, 'You are defeated.'
पुरं जनपदो भूमिरब्राह्मणधनैः सह। अब्राह्मणाश्च पुरुषा राजञ्शिष्टं धनं मम। एतद्राजन्मम धनं तेन दीव्याम्यहं त्वया
The city, the land, the territory, along with wealth not belonging to Brahmins, and the non-Brahmin men, O King—this remaining wealth is mine. With this, O King, I gamble with you.
एतच्छ्रुत्वा व्यवसितो निकृतिं समुपाश्रितः। जितमित्येव शकुनिर्युधिष्ठिरमभाषत
Hearing this, resolved and embracing deceit, Shakuni declared to Yudhishthira, 'You are defeated.'
राजपुत्रा इमे राजञ्छोमन्ते यैर्विभूषिताः। कुम्डलानि च निष्काश्च सर्वं राजविभूषणम्। एतन्मम धनं राजंस्तेन दीव्याम्यहं त्वया
These princes, O King, adorned with ornaments, earrings, and necklaces, all royal adornments—this is my wealth, O King; with this I gamble with you.
एतच्छ्रुत्वा व्यवसितो निकृतिं समुपाश्रितः। जितमित्येव शकुनिर्युधिष्ठिरमभाषत
Hearing this, resolved and embracing deceit, Shakuni declared to Yudhishthira, 'You are defeated.'
श्यामो युवा लोहिताक्षः सिंहस्कन्धो महाभुजः। नकुलो ग्लह एवैकी विद्ध्येतन्मम तद्धनम्
Dark, youthful, red-eyed, broad-shouldered, mighty-armed—Nakula is the single stake in the game; know that this is my wealth.
प्रियस्ते नकुलो राजन्राजपुत्रो युधिष्ठिर। अस्माकं वशतां प्राप्तो भूयः केनेह दीव्यसे
Nakula, the prince, is dear to you, O King Yudhishthira. He has come under our control; why do you continue to gamble here?
एवमुक्त्वा तु तानक्षाञ्शकुनिः प्रत्यदीव्यत। जितमित्येव शकुनिर्युधिष्ठिरमभाषत
Having spoken thus about the dice, Shakuni played again; and declared to Yudhishthira, 'You are defeated.'
अयं धर्मान्सहदेवोऽनुशास्ति लोके ह्यस्मिन्पण्डिताख्यां गतश्च। अनर्हता राजपुत्रेण तेन दीव्याम्यहं चाप्रियवत्प्रियेण
This Sahadeva instructs in righteousness; in this world he is renowned as wise. With this prince, who is unworthy, I gamble, as with one dear and one not dear.
एतच्छ्रुत्वा व्यवसितो निकृतिं समुपाश्रितः। जितमित्येव शकुनिर्युधिष्ठिरमभाषत
Hearing this, resolved and embracing deceit, Shakuni declared to Yudhishthira, 'You are defeated.'
माद्रीपुत्रौ प्रियौ राजंस्तवेमौ विजितौ मया। गरीयांसौ तु मन्ये भीमसेनधनञ्जयौ
These two sons of Madri, dear to you, O King, have been won by me; but I consider Bhimasena and Dhananjaya as greater.
अधर्मं चरसे नूनं यो नावेक्षसि वै नयम्। यो नः सुमनसां मूढ विभेदं कर्तुमिच्छसि
You surely act unrighteously, who do not consider the right path; you, fool, who wish to cause division among us who are of good mind.
गर्ते मत्तः प्रपतते प्रमत्तः स्थाणुमृच्छति। ज्येष्ठो राजन्व्ररिष्ठोऽसि नमस्ते भरतर्षभ
The intoxicated falls into a pit, the careless grasps a tree; you are the eldest, O King, the best among Bharatas; salutations to you.
स्वप्ने तानि न दृश्यन्ते जाग्रतो वा युधिष्ठिर। कितवा यानि दीव्यन्तः प्रलपन्त्युत्कटा इव
Those things are not seen in dreams, nor when awake, O Yudhishthira—those things which deceitful gamblers, raving like madmen, utter.
यो नः सङ्ख्ये नौरिव पारनेता जेता रिपूणां राजपुत्रस्तरस्वी। अनर्हता लोकवीरेण तेन दीव्याम्यहं शकुने फाल्गुनेन
He who, like a boatman in battle, leads us across, the swift prince who conquers our foes—by him, Phalguna, who is unworthy to be wagered, I gamble, O Shakuni.
एतच्छ्रुत्वा व्यवसितो निकृतिं समुपाश्रितः। जितमित्येव शकुनिर्युधिष्ठिरमभाषत
Hearing this, intent on deceit and resorting to trickery, Shakuni said to Yudhishthira, 'You have lost.'
अयं मया पाण्डवानां धनिर्धरः पराजितः पाण्डवः सव्यसाची। भीमेन राजन्दयितेन दीव्य यत्कैतवं पाण्डव तेऽवशिष्टम्
This wielder of wealth among the Pandavas, the left-handed archer, has been defeated by me, O Pandava. Whatever remains to you in this deceit, O Pandava, is Bhima, beloved of the king.
यो नो नेता यो युधि नः प्रणेता यथा वज्री दानवशत्रुरेकः। तिर्यक्प्रेक्षी सन्नतभ्रूर्महात्मा सिंहस्कन्धो यश्च सदाऽत्यमर्षी
He who is our leader, our commander in battle, like the wielder of the thunderbolt, the sole destroyer of the Danavas; he who glances sideways, with bent brows, great-souled, lion-shouldered, and ever unyielding—
बलेन तुल्यो यस्यप पुमान्न विद्यते गदाभृतामग्र्य इहारिमर्दनः। अनर्हता राजपुत्रेण तेन दीव्याम्यहं भीमसेनेन राजन्
There is no man equal to him in strength, the foremost among mace-wielders, crusher of enemies here. By him, the prince, who is unworthy to be wagered, I gamble, O king—by Bhimasena.
एतच्छ्रुत्वा व्यवसितो निकृतिं समुपाश्रितः। जितमित्येव शकुनिर्युधिष्ठिरमभाषत
Hearing this, intent on deceit and resorting to trickery, Shakuni said to Yudhishthira, 'You have lost.'
बहुवित्तं पराजैषीर्भ्रातॄंश्च सहयद्विपान्। आचक्ष्व वित्तं कौन्तेय यदि तेऽस्त्यपराजितम्
You have lost much wealth, your brothers, and your allied elephants. Declare, O son of Kunti, if you have any wealth left unbeaten.
अहं विशिष्टः सर्वेषां भ्रातॄणां दयितस्तथा। कुर्यामहं जितः कर्म स्वयमात्मन्युपल्पुते
I am the foremost and dearest of all the brothers. If I am defeated, I myself shall perform the act, considering myself lost.
एतच्छ्रुत्वा व्यवसितो निकृतिं समुपाश्रितः। जितमित्येव शकुनिर्युधिष्ठिरमभाषत
Hearing this, intent on deceit and resorting to trickery, Shakuni said to Yudhishthira, 'You have lost.'
एतत्पापिष्ठमकरोर्यदात्मानं पराजयेः। शिष्टे सति धने राजन्पाप आत्मपराजयः
This most wicked act you have done, in defeating yourself, while wealth still remained, O king—self-defeat is a sin.
एवमुक्त्वा मताक्षस्तान् ग्लहे सर्वानवस्थितान्। पराजयल्लोकवीरानुक्त्वा राज्ञां पृथक् पृथक्
Having thus spoken, the dice-player overcame all those renowned heroes in the game, one by one, without announcing to the kings.
