चौण्डिकाश्चौदकाश्चैव साल्वाश्चैव विशम्पते। अङ्कवङ्काश्च यवना अनवद्या गयैः सह
The Cauṇḍikas, Audakas, and the Sālvas, O lord of men, the Aṅkas, Vaṅkas, Yavanas—faultless ones—together with the Gayas,
सुजातयः श्रेणिमन्तः श्रेयांसः शस्त्रधारिणः। आहार्षुः क्षत्रिया वित्तं शतशोऽजातशत्रवै
Noble-born, organized in guilds, excellent and armed with weapons, these Kṣatriyas brought wealth by the hundreds to Ajātaśatru.
वङ्काः कलिङ्गा मगधास्ताम्रलिप्ताः सपुण्ड्रकाः। दुकूलं कौशिकं चैव पत्रोर्णं चैव भारत
The Vaṅkas, Kaliṅgas, Magadhas, Tāmraliptas with the Puṇḍras, brought fine linen from Kauśika and cloth of leaves and wool, O Bhārata.
उपावृत्ता नृपास्तस्य ददुः प्रीतिं न चागमन्। उच्यन्ते तत्र हि द्वार्स्थैर्बलिमादाय विष्ठिताः
The kings who had arrived gave their respects but did not enter; those who stood at the gates with tribute are mentioned there.
ईषादन्तान्हेमकक्ष्यान्पद्मवर्णान्कुथावृतान्। शैलाभान्नित्यमत्तांश्चाप्यभितः काम्यकं सरः
With slightly curved tusks, golden chains, lotus-colored, covered with cloth, and always intoxicated, elephants surrounded the Kāmyaka lake.
क्षमावतः कुलीनांश्च कुञ्जरान्सपरिच्छदान्। दत्त्वैकैको दशशतान्द्वारेण प्रविशन्त्विति
Noble elephants with attendants, belonging to patient and high-born lords, each gave a hundred at the gate and were allowed to enter.
वैदेहकाश्च पुण्ड्राश्च गौलेयास्ताम्रलिप्तकाः। मरुकाः काशिका दर्दा भौमेया नटनाटकाः
The Vaidehas, Puṇḍras, Gauleyas, Tāmraliptakas, Marukas, Kāśikas, Dardas, Bhaumeyas, and dancers and actors,
कर्णाटाः कांस्यकुट्टाश्च पद्मजालाः सतीनराः। दाक्षिणात्याः पुलिन्दाश्च शवेरास्तङ्कणाः शषाः
The Karṇāṭas, workers in bronze, Padmajālas, virtuous men, southerners, Pulindas, Śaveras, Taṅkaṇas, and Śaṣas,
बर्बरा यवनाश्चैव गर्गराभीरकास्तथा। पल्लवाः शककारूशास्तुम्बकाः काशिकास्तदा
The Barbaras, Yavanas, Gargaras, Ābhīras, Pallavas, Śakas, Kārūṣas, Tumbakas, and Kāśikas at that time,
एते चान्ये च बहवो नानादिगभ्यः समागताः। अन्यैश्चोपहृतान्यत्र रत्नानि हि महात्मभिः
And many others from various directions gathered there, and other great souls brought jewels as gifts.
समुद्रसारवैडूर्यान्मुक्ताः शङ्खास्तथैव च। शुभावर्ताञ्छुभाञ्छुक्तीः सिंहलाः समुपाहरन्
Pearls, conch-shells, and beautiful mother-of-pearl from the ocean, and splendid bivalves, were brought by the people of Siṃhala.
सम्भृतान्मणिचीरैश्च श्यामांस्ताम्रान्तलोचनान्। राजा चित्ररथो नाम गन्धर्वो वासवानुगः। शतानि चत्वार्यददद्धयानां वातरंहसाम्
With dark horses, their eyes copper at the edges, covered in jeweled cloths, King Citraratha by name, the Gandharva, follower of Vāsava, gave four hundred swift steeds.
तुम्बुरुस्तु प्रमुदितो गन्धर्वो वाजिनां शतम्। आम्रपत्रसवर्णानामददद्धेममालिनाम्
Tumburu, the delighted Gandharva, gave a hundred swift horses, adorned with golden garlands and shining like mango leaves.
कृती राजा च कौरव्य शूकराणां विशाम्पते। अददद्गजरत्नानां शतानि सुबहून्यथ
O Kauravya, the accomplished king also gave many hundreds of excellent elephants among the boars, O lord of men.
विराटेन तु मत्स्येन बल्यर्थं हेममालिनाम्। कुञ्जराणां सहस्रे द्वे मत्तानां समुपाहृते
Virata, the king of the Matsyas, for the sake of tribute, brought two thousand intoxicated elephants adorned with gold garlands.
पांसुराष्ट्राद्वमुदानो राजा षड्विंशतिं गजान्। अश्वानां चसहस्रे द्वे राजन्काञ्चनमालिनाम्
From Pāṃsuraṣṭra, King Vamudāna joyfully brought twenty-six elephants and two thousand horses, all adorned with golden garlands, O King.
जवसत्वोपपन्नानां वयस्थानां नराधिप। बलिं च कृत्स्नमादाय पाण्डवेभ्यो न्यवेदयत्
All these were young, swift, and strong, O lord of men; having collected the entire tribute, he presented it to the sons of Pāṇḍu.
यज्ञसेनेन दासीनां सहस्राणि चतुर्दश। दासानामयुतं चैव सदाराणां विशाम्पते
Yajñasena gave fourteen thousand maidservants and one hundred thousand male servants with their wives, O lord of men.
गजयुक्ता महाराज रथाः षड्विंशतिस्तथा। राज्यं च कृत्स्नं पार्थेभ्यो यज्ञार्थं वै निवेदितम्
O great king, twenty-six chariots yoked with elephants were also presented, as well as the entire kingdom, to the sons of Pāṇḍu for the sake of the sacrifice.
वासुदेवोऽपि वार्ष्णेयो मानं कुर्वन्किरीटिनः। अददद्गजमुख्यानां सहस्राणि चतुर्दश
Vāsudeva, the descendant of the Vṛṣṇis, honoring the wearer of the diadem, gave fourteen thousand foremost elephants.
आत्मा हि कृष्णः पार्थस्य कृष्णस्यात्मा धनञ्जयः। यद्ब्रूयादर्जुनः कृष्णं सर्वं कुर्यादसंशयम्
For Krishna is the very self of Pārtha, and Dhanañjaya is the self of Krishna; whatever Arjuna would ask of Krishna, he would surely do without doubt.
कृष्णो धनञ्जयस्यार्थे स्वर्गलोकमपि त्यजेत्। तथैव पार्थः कृष्णार्थे प्राणानपि परित्यजेत्
Krishna, for the sake of Dhanañjaya, would even abandon the heavenly worlds; likewise, Pārtha would give up his very life for Krishna's sake.
सुरभींश्चन्दनरसान्हेमकुम्भसमास्थितान्। मलयाद्दर्दुराच्चैव चन्दनागुरुसञ्चयान्
Sandalwood cows, sandalwood essence in golden vessels, and heaps of sandal and agaru from Malaya and Dardura were brought.
मणिरत्नानि भास्वन्ति काञ्चनं सूक्ष्मवस्त्रकम्। चोलपाण्ड्यावपि द्वारं न लेभाते ह्युपस्थितौ
Shining jewels and gems, gold, and fine cloth—yet even the gateways of Cola and Pāṇḍya could not obtain entry, though they had arrived.
समुद्रसारं वैदूर्यं मुक्तासङ्घांस्तथैव च। शतशश्च कुथांस्तत्र सिंहलाः समुपाहरन्
Pearls in clusters, cat's-eye gems from the ocean, and hundreds of caskets were brought there by the people of Siṃhala.
संवृता मणिचीरैस्तु श्यामास्ताम्रान्तलोचनाः। ता गृहीत्वा नरास्तत्र द्वारि तिष्ठन्ति वारिताः
Women with dark complexions and coppery eyes, covered with jeweled veils, stood at the gates, held back after bringing their gifts.
प्रीत्यर्थं ब्राह्मणश्चैव क्षत्रियाश्च विनिर्जिताः। उपाजह्रुर्विशश्चैव शूद्राः शुश्रूषवस्तथा
For the sake of honoring, Brahmins, conquered Kṣatriyas, Vaiśyas, and also devoted Śūdras brought offerings.
प्रीत्या च बहुमानाच्चाप्युपागच्छन्युधिष्ठिरम्। सर्वे म्लेच्छाः सर्ववर्णा आदिमध्यान्तजास्तथा
Out of affection and great respect, all the Mlecchas of every class, born at the beginning, middle, and end, came to Yudhiṣṭhira.
नानादेशसमुत्थैश्चन नानाजितिभिरेव च। पर्यस्त इव लोकोऽयं युधिष्ठिरनिवेशने
With people gathered from many regions and many conquerors, it seemed as if the whole world was assembled at Yudhiṣṭhira's residence.
उच्चावचानुपग्राहान्राजभिः प्रापितान्बहून्। शत्रूणां पश्यतो दुःखान्मुमूर्षा मे व्यजायत
Seeing the many attendants of various ranks brought by the kings, I was seized by a desire for death out of sorrow at the sight of our enemies.
