अश्नाम्याच्छादयामीति प्रपश्यन्हीनपौरुषः। नामर्षं कुरुते यस्तु पुरुषः सोऽधमः स्मृतः
He who, seeing himself eating and clothed, does not feel indignation at his own lack of manliness, is regarded as the lowest of men.
न मां प्रीणाति राजेन्द्र लक्ष्मीः साधारणी विभो। ज्वलितामेव कौन्येये श्रियं दृष्ट्वा च विव्यथे
O king of kings, that common prosperity does not please me, O mighty one; seeing the blazing wealth of Kauṇeya, I was distressed.
सर्वां च पृथिवीं चैव युधिष्ठिरवशानुगाम्। स्थिरोऽस्मि योऽहं जीवामि दुःखादेतद्ब्रवीमि ते
Though the entire earth is under Yudhishthira's command, I remain steadfast and alive; it is from this sorrow that I speak to you.
आवर्जिता इवाभान्ति नीपाश्चित्रककौकुराः। कारस्कारा लोहजङ्घा युधिष्ठिरनिवेशने
In Yudhishthira's palace, the Nipas, Citraka, Kakaukara, Karaskara, and Lohajangha trees appear as if they have been gathered together.
हिमवत्सागरानुपाः सर्वे रत्नाकरास्तथा। अन्त्याः सर्वे पर्युदस्ता युधिष्ठिरनिवेशने
All the treasures from the slopes of the Himalayas and the shores of the ocean, indeed all the greatest gems, have been brought together in Yudhishthira's palace.
ज्येष्ठोऽयमिति मां मत्वा श्रेष्ठश्चेति विशाम्पते। युधिष्ठिरेण सत्कृत्य युक्तो रत्नपरिग्रहे
Thinking, 'He is the eldest, and the best,' O lord of men, Yudhishthira honored me and entrusted me with the collection of gems.
उपस्थितानां रत्नानां श्रेष्ठानामर्घहारिणाम्। नादृश्यत परः पारो नापरस्तत्र भारत
Among the assembled gems, the best and most precious, no boundary was seen—neither farther nor nearer, O Bharata.
न मे हस्तः समभवद्वसु तत्प्रतिगृह्णतः। अतिष्ठन्त मयि श्रान्ते गृग्य दूराहृतं वसु
As I received that wealth, my hand could not contain it; O Gṛgya, the treasures brought from afar overflowed as I grew weary.
कृतां बिन्दुसरोरत्नैर्मयेन स्फाटिकच्छदाम्। अपश्यं नलिनीं पूर्णामुदकस्येव भारत
With the gems from the Bindusara lake, I saw a lotus pond with a crystal surface, filled as if with water, O Bharata.
वस्त्रमुत्कर्षति मयि प्राहसत्स वृकोदरः। शत्रोर्ऋद्धिविशेषेण विमूढ रत्तवर्जितम्
As I was lifting a garment, Bhimasena laughed at me, bewildered by the enemy's extraordinary prosperity, devoid of gems.
तत्र स्म यदि शक्तः स्यं पातयेऽहं वृकोदरम्। यदि कुर्यां समारम्भं भीमं हन्तुं नराधिप
There, if I had been able, I would have struck down Bhimasena; if I had made the attempt to kill Bhima, O king of men.
शिशुपाल इवास्माकं गतिः स्यान्नात्र संशयः। सपत्नेनावहासो मे स मां दहति भारत
Our fate would have been like that of Shishupala—of this there is no doubt; the mockery by my rival burns me, O Bharata.
पुनश्च तादृशीमेव वापीं जलजशालिनीम्। मत्वा शिलासमां तोये पतितोऽस्मि नराधिप
Again, thinking the same, I fell into a pond full of lotuses, believing the water to be solid stone, O king of men.
तत्र मां प्राहसत्कृष्णः पार्थेन सह सुस्वरम्। द्रौपदी च सह स्त्रीभिर्व्यथयन्ती मनो मम
There Krishna, together with Partha, laughed at me in a melodious voice; and Draupadi, along with the women, tormented my mind.
क्लिन्नवस्त्रस्य तु जले किङ्करा राजनोदिताः। ददुर्वासांसि मेऽन्यानि तच्च दुःखं परं मम
O King, when my clothes became wet in the water, the attendants ordered by the king gave me other garments, and that brought me great distress.
प्रलम्भं च शृणुष्वान्यद्वदतो मे नराधिप। अद्वारेण विनिर्गच्छन्द्वारसंस्थानरूपिणा। अभिहत्य शिलां भूयो ललाटेनास्मि विक्षतः
Hear also another hardship I endured, O ruler of men: as I was leaving by a side door, shaped like the main entrance, I struck my forehead against a stone and was wounded again.
तत्र मां यमजौ दूरादालोक्याभिहतं तदा। बाहुभिः परिगृह्णीतां शोचन्तौ सहितावुभौ
There, the twin sons of Yama saw me from afar, injured at that time, and both together, grieving, embraced me with their arms.
उवाच सहदेवस्तु तत्र मां विस्मयन्निव। इद द्वारं धार्तराष्ट्र मा गच्छेति पुनः पुनः
Then Sahadeva spoke to me there, as if in amazement: 'Do not go through this door, son of Dhritarashtra,' he said again and again.
भीमसेनेन तत्रोक्तो धृतराष्ट्रात्मजेति च। सम्बोध्य प्रहसित्वा च इतो द्वारं नराधिप
Bhimasena also addressed me there, calling me 'son of Dhritarashtra,' and, smiling after greeting me, said, 'This is the door, O ruler of men.'
नामधेयानि रत्नानां पुरस्तान्न श्रुतानि मे। यानि दृष्टानि मे तस्यां मनस्तपति तच्च मे
I had not heard before the names of the jewels that I saw there; my mind is troubled by what I saw in that place.
यन्मया पाण्डवोयानां दृष्टं तच्छृणु भारत। आहृतं भूमिपालैर्हि वसु मुख्यं ततस्ततः
Hear, O Bharata, what treasures of the Pandavas I saw: the foremost wealth brought there by kings from various lands.
नाविदं मूढमात्मानं दृष्ट्वाहं तदरेर्धनम्। फलतो भूमितो वाऽपि प्रतिपद्यस्व भारत
Seeing that wealth of the enemy, I did not consider myself ignorant or foolish; O Bharata, take what is gained from the fruit or from the earth.
और्णान्बैलान्वार्षदंशान् जातरूपपरिष्कृतान्। प्रावाराजिनमुख्यांश्च काम्भोजः प्रददौ बहून्
The king of the Kambojas gave many fine woolen blankets, those made from sheep and goats, adorned with gold, and excellent cloaks and skins.
अश्वांस्तित्तिरिकल्माषांस्त्रिशतं शुकनासिकान्। अष्ट्रवामीस्त्रिगर्ताश्च पुष्टाः पीलुशमीङ्गुदैः

गोपाः स्वीयेन सहितास्तदादाय चतुष्पदम्। वसातयोऽन्यद्द्रव्यं द्वारि तस्यावतस्थिरे
Cowherds, along with their own cattle, brought four-footed animals; other wealth and goods were stationed at his door.
कमण्डलूनुपादाय जातरूपमयञ्छिवान्। रत्नानि च हिरण्यं च सुवर्णं चैव केवलम्
Bringing water pots and auspicious items made of gold, as well as jewels, gold, and pure gold itself.
प्रीयमाणः प्रसन्नात्मा स्वयं स्वजनसंवृतः। त्रैखर्वो रथमुख्येशः पाण्डवाय न्यवेदयत्
Pleased and with a cheerful heart, surrounded by his own people, the lord of the foremost chariots, Traikharva, presented them to the Pandava himself.
यश्च स द्विजमुख्येन राज्ञः शङ्खो निवेदितः। प्रीत्या दत्तः कुविन्देन धर्मराजाय धीमते
And that conch, which was offered to the king by the foremost of Brahmins, was given with affection by Kuvinda to the wise Dharmaraja.
तं सर्वे भ्रातरो भ्रात्रे ददुः शङ्खं किरीटिने। तं प्रत्यगृह्णाद्बीभत्सुस्तोयजं हेममालिनम्
All the brothers gave that conch, belonging to their brother, to the diademed one; Arjuna accepted that water-born conch, adorned with gold.
चित्रं निष्कसहस्रेण भ्राजमानं स्वतेजसा। रुचिरं दर्शनीयं च पूजितं विश्वकर्मणा
Brilliant with its own radiance, adorned with a thousand gold coins, beautiful and pleasing to behold, it was crafted by Vishvakarman and honored.
