तद्विघातार्थमारम्भो विधिवत्तस्य कश्यप
Therefore, O Kasyapa, this rite was properly begun for the purpose of obstructing him.
एवमस्त्विति तं चापि प्रत्यूचुः सत्यवादिनः। तान्कश्यप उवाचेदं सान्त्वपूर्वं प्रजापतिः
So be it, they replied truthfully; and Kasyapa, lord of creatures, addressed them with gentle words.
अयमिन्द्रस्त्रिभुवने नियोगाद्ब्रह्मणः कृतः। इन्द्रार्थे च भवन्तोऽपि यत्नवन्तस्तपोधनाः
This Indra was appointed over the three worlds by the command of Brahma; and you ascetics also exerted yourselves for Indra's sake.
न मिथ्या ब्रह्मणो वाक्यं कर्तुमर्हथ सत्तमाः। भवतां हि न मिथ्याऽयं संकल्पो वै चिकीर्षितः
O excellent ones, you should not act contrary to Brahma's word; for your intention, too, is never false.
भवत्वेष पतत्रीणामिन्द्रोऽतिबलसत्त्ववान्। प्रसादः क्रियतामस्य देवराजस्य याचतः
Let this one be the Indra of the birds, exceedingly strong and powerful; grant this favor to the king of the gods, who requests it.
एवमुक्ताः कश्यपेन वालखिल्यास्तपोधनाः। प्रत्यूचुरभिसंपूज्य मुनिश्रेष्ठं प्रजापतिम्
Thus addressed by Kaśyapa, the Vālakhilyas, rich in austerity, honored the best of sages, the lord of creatures, and replied:
इन्द्रार्थोऽयं समारम्भः सर्वेषां नः प्रजापते। अपत्यार्थं समारम्भो भवतश्चायमीप्सितः
This endeavor of ours, O lord of creatures, is for Indra’s sake; but your endeavor, which you desire, is for offspring.
तदिदं सफलं कर्म त्वयैव प्रतिगृह्यताम्। तथा चैवं विधत्स्वात्र यथा श्रेयोऽनुपश्यसि
Therefore, let this act bear fruit through your acceptance; and act here as you see best.
एतस्मिन्नेव काले तु देवी दाक्षायणी शुभा। विनता नाम कल्याणी पुत्रकामा यशस्विनी
At that very time, the auspicious daughter of Daksha, Vinatā by name, virtuous and renowned, desired a son.
तपस्तप्त्वा व्रतपरा स्नाता पुंसवने शुचिः। उपचक्राम भर्तारं तामुवाचाथ कश्यपः
Having performed austerities, devoted to vows, purified by bathing in the Puṃsavana rite, she approached her husband; then Kaśyapa spoke to her.
आरम्भः सफलो देवि भविता यस्त्वयेप्सितः। जनयिष्यसि पुत्रौ द्वौ वीरौ त्रिभुवनेश्वरौ
O lady, the endeavor you desire will bear fruit; you will give birth to two heroic sons, lords of the three worlds.
तपसा वालखिल्यानां मम संकल्पतस्तथा। भविष्यतो महाभागौ पुत्रौ त्रैलोक्यपूजितौ
By the austerity of the Vālakhilyas and through my resolve, two illustrious sons will be born, honored throughout the three worlds.
उवाच चैनां भगवान्कश्यपः पुनरेव ह। धार्यतामप्रमादेन गर्भोऽयं सुमहोदयः
The venerable Kaśyapa again said to her: 'Let this great and auspicious pregnancy be carried with utmost care.'
एकः सर्वपतत्रीणामिन्द्रत्वं कारयिष्यति। लोकसंभावितो वीरः कामरूपो विहङ्गमः
One of them will become Indra of all the birds, a hero esteemed in the world, able to assume any form at will.
शतक्रतुमथोवाच प्रीयमाणः प्रजापतिः। त्वत्सहायौ महावीर्यौ भ्रातरौ ते भविष्यतः
Then the lord of creatures, pleased, spoke to Śatakratu: 'Two mighty brothers will be your allies.'
नैताभ्यां भविता दोषः सकाशात्ते पुरंदर। व्येतु ते शक्र संतापस्त्वमेवेन्द्रो भविष्यसि
There will be no fault for you, O Purandara, because of them; let your anxiety cease, O Śakra, for you alone will remain Indra.
न चाप्येवं त्वया भूयः क्षेप्तव्या ब्रह्मवादिनः। न चावमान्या दर्पात्ते वाग्वज्रा भृशकोपनाः
Nor should you henceforth insult the speakers of Brahman, nor, out of pride, despise those whose words are like thunderbolts and who are easily angered.
एवमुक्तो जगामेन्द्रो निर्विशङ्कस्त्रिविष्टपम्। विनता चापि सिद्धार्था बभूव मुदिता तथा
Thus addressed, Indra departed without fear to heaven; and Vinatā, her purpose fulfilled, became joyful.
जनयामास पुत्रौ द्वावरुणं गरुडं तथा। विकलाङ्गोऽरुणस्तत्र भास्करस्य पुरःसरः
She gave birth to two sons, Aruṇa and Garuḍa; Aruṇa was deformed, the forerunner of the sun.
पतत्त्रीणां च गरुडमिन्द्रत्वेनाभ्यषिञ्चत। तस्यैतत्कर्म सुमहच्छ्रूयतां भृगुनन्दन
Garuḍa was anointed as Indra among the birds; hear now, O descendant of Bhṛgu, of his great deed.
ततस्तस्माद्गिरिवरात्समुदीर्णमहाबलः।' गरुडः पक्षिराट् तूर्णं संप्राप्तो विबुधान्प्रति
Then from that great mountain arose Garuḍa, king of birds, mighty and swift, who approached the gods.
तं दृष्ट्वातिबलं चैव प्राकम्पन्त सुरास्ततः। परस्परं च प्रत्यघ्नन्सर्वप्रहरणान्युत
Seeing him, exceedingly strong, the gods trembled; and, attacking each other, seized all their weapons.
तत्र चासीदमेयात्मा विद्युदग्निसमप्रभः। भौमनः सुमहावीर्यः सोमस्य परिरक्षिता
There was present there a being of immeasurable nature, radiant like lightning and fire, of great might, born of the earth, and the protector of Soma.
स तेन पतगेन्द्रेण पक्षतुण्डनखैः क्षतः। मुहूर्तमतुलं युद्धं कृत्वा विनिहतो युधि
He was wounded in battle by that lord of birds, struck by wings, beak, and claws; after fighting a fierce battle for a moment, he was slain in combat.
रजश्चोद्धूय सुमहत्पक्षवातेन खेचरः। कृत्वा लोकान्निरालोकांस्तेन देवानवाकिरत्
Then the bird, moving through the sky, raised a great cloud of dust with the wind of his wings, making the worlds dark and showering it upon the gods.
तेनावकीर्णा रजसा देवा मोहमुपागमन्। न चैवं ददृशुश्छन्ना रजसाऽमृतरक्षिणः
Covered by that dust, the gods fell into confusion; thus shrouded, they could not see the guardian of the nectar.
एवं संलोडयामास गरुडस्त्रिदिवालयम्। पक्षतुण्डप्रहारैस्तु देवान्स विददार ह
Thus Garuda shook the celestial realm, and with blows from his wings and beak, he tore the gods apart.
ततो देवः सहस्राक्षस्तूर्णं वायुमचोदयत्। विक्षिपेमां रजोवृष्टिं तवेदं कर्म मारुत
Then the thousand-eyed god swiftly urged Vayu: 'Dispel this shower of dust, O Wind; this is your task, Marut!'
अथ वायुरपोवाह तद्रजस्तरसा बली। ततो वितिमिरे जाते देवाः शकुनिमार्दयन्
Then Vayu, powerful and swift, carried away that dust with force; when the darkness was cleared, the gods attacked the bird.
ननादोच्चैः स बलवान्महामेघ इवाम्बरे। वध्यमानः सुरगणैः सर्वभूतानि भीषयन्
That mighty one roared loudly like a great cloud in the sky, terrifying all beings as he was struck by the hosts of gods.
