तथाहि रत्नन्यादाय विविधानि नृपा नृपम्। उपातिष्ठन्त कौन्येयं वैश्या इव करप्रदाः
Thus, bringing various jewels, the kings attended the son of Kunti like merchants paying tribute to a king.
श्रियं तथागतं दृष्ट्वा ज्वलन्तीमिव पाण्डवे। अमर्षवशमापन्नो दह्यामि न तथोचितः
Seeing that prosperity come to the Pandava, blazing as it were, I am overcome by envy and burn, which is not fitting.
वह्निमेव प्रवेक्ष्यामि भक्षयिष्यामि वा विषम्। अपो वापि प्रवेक्ष्यामिन हि शक्ष्यामि जीवितुम्
I will enter fire, or I will take poison, or I will enter water—for I cannot endure to live.
को हि नाम पुमांल्लोके मर्षयिष्यति सत्ववान्। सपत्नानृद्ध्यतो दृष्ट्वा हीनमात्मानमेव च
For what man of spirit in the world could bear to see his rivals prosper while he himself is diminished?
सोऽहं न स्त्री न चाप्यस्त्री न पुमान्नापुमानपि। योऽहं तां मर्षयाम्यद्य तादृशीं श्रियमागताम्
So I am neither woman nor not-woman, neither man nor not-man, who today endures such prosperity coming to them.
ईश्वरत्वं पृथिव्याश्च वसुमत्तां च तादृशीम्। यज्ञं च तादृशं दृष्ट्वा मादृशः को न संञ्ज्वरेत्
Seeing their lordship over the earth, such wealth, and such a sacrifice—who like me would not be inflamed?
अशक्तश्चैक एवाहं तामाहर्तुं नृपश्रियम्। सहायांश्च न पश्यामि तेन मृत्युं विचिन्तये
Alone, I am unable to seize that royal fortune, nor do I see any allies; therefore, I contemplate death.
दैवमेव परं मन्ये पौरुषं च निरर्थकम्। दृष्ट्वा कुन्तीसुते शुद्धां श्रियं तामहतां तथा
I consider fate supreme and effort useless, seeing the pure, unassailable prosperity of Kunti's son.
कृतो यत्नो मया पूर्वं विनाशे तस्य सौबल। तच्च सर्वमतिक्रम्य संवृद्धोऽप्स्विव पङ्गजम्
I made every effort before for his destruction, son of Subala, but all that was surpassed, and he has grown like a lotus in water.
न दैवं परं मन्ये पौरुषं च निरर्थकम्। धार्तराष्ट्राश्च हीयन्ते पार्था वर्धन्ति नित्यशः। कृष्णस्तु सुमनास्तेषां विवर्धयति सम्पदः
I do not consider fate supreme, nor effort useless; the sons of Dhritarashtra decline, while the Parthas ever prosper, and Krishna gladly increases their wealth.
सोऽहं श्रियं च तां दृष्ट्वा सभां तां च तथाविधाम्। रक्षिभिश्चावहासं तं परितप्ये यथाऽग्निना
Having seen that prosperity and such a splendid assembly, and the ridicule of the guards, I am tormented as if by fire.
अमर्षं च समाविष्टं धृतराष्ट्रे निवेदय
Report to Dhritarashtra that I am overcome with indignation.
दुर्योधन न तेऽमर्षः कार्यः प्रति युधिष्ठिरम्। भागधेयानि हि स्वानि पाण्डवा भुञ्जते सदा
Duryodhana, you should not harbor resentment against Yudhishthira; for the Pandavas always enjoy their rightful share.
विधानं विविधाकारं परं तेषां विधानतः। अनेकैरभ्युपायैश्च त्वया न शकिताः पुरा
Their arrangements are of many kinds, and by various means you have never been able to overcome them.
आरब्धा हि महाराज पुनः पुनररिन्दम। विमुक्ताश्च नरव्याघ्रा भगधेयपुरस्कृताः। `उत्साहवन्तः पुरुषा नावसीदन्ति कर्मसु
Indeed, O king, they have repeatedly begun undertakings and, freed by their destiny, those tiger-like men do not falter in their actions.
तैर्लब्धा द्रौपदी भार्या द्रुपदश्च सुतैः सह। सहायाः पृथिवीपाला वासुदेवश्च वीर्यवान्
By them, Draupadi was won as wife, Drupada along with his sons became allies, the kings of the earth are their supporters, and valiant Vasudeva as well.
लब्धश्चानभिभूतार्थैः पित्र्योंशः पृथिवीपते। विवृद्धस्तेजसा तेषां तत्र का परिदेवना
They have obtained their paternal share, O lord of the earth, with unconquerable wealth; their splendor has increased—what cause is there for lamentation?
धनञ्जयेन गाण्डीवमक्षय्यौ च महेषुधी। लब्धान्यस्त्राणि दिव्यानि तोषयित्वा हुताशनम्
By Dhananjaya, with the Gandiva bow and inexhaustible mighty arrows, divine weapons were obtained by pleasing the fire-god.
तेन कार्मुकमुख्येन बाहुवीर्येण चात्मनः। कृता वशे महीपालास्तत्र का परिदेवना
With that foremost bow and his own strength of arms, he subdued the kings; what cause is there for lamentation?
अग्निदाहान्मयं चापि मोक्षयित्वा स दानवम्। सभां तां कारयामास सव्यसाची परन्तपः
Having freed Maya from the fire, that destroyer of foes, Savyasachi, caused that assembly to be built.
तेन चैव मयेनोक्ताः किङ्करा नाम राक्षसाः। हन्ति तां सभां भीमास्तत्र का परिदेवना
And by Maya, those Rakshasas called attendants were appointed; they protect that wondrous hall—what cause is there for lamentation?
यच्चासहायतां राजन्नुक्तवानसि भारत। तन्मिथ्या भ्रातरो हीमे तव सर्वे वशानुगाः
O king, what you said about their lack of allies is false; all your brothers are obedient to you.
द्रोणस्तव महेष्वासः सह पुत्रेण वीर्यवान्। मूतपुत्रश्च राधेयो दृढधन्वा महारथः
Drona, your mighty archer, together with his valiant son, and Radheya, the son of a charioteer, steadfast and a great warrior.
स एकः समरे सर्वान्पाण्डवान्सहसोमकान्। विजेष्यति महाबाहो किं सहायैः करिष्यसि
He alone, O mighty-armed, will defeat all the Pandavas and the Somakas in battle; what will you accomplish with allies?
भीष्मश्च पुरुषव्याघ्रो गौतमश्च महारथः। जयद्रथश्च बलावान्सोमदत्तस्तथैव च
Bhishma, the tiger among men, Gautama the great chariot-warrior, Jayadratha the powerful, and likewise Somadatta.
अहं च सह सोदर्यैः सौमदत्तिश्च पार्थिवः। एतैस्त्वं सहितः सर्वैर्जय कृत्स्नं वसुन्दराम्
I, along with my brothers, and Saumadatti the king; with all these, conquer the entire earth.
त्वया च सहितो राजन्नेतैश्चान्यैर्महारथैः। एतानहं विजेष्यामि यदि त्वमनुमन्यसे
With you, O king, and these other great warriors, I will defeat them all, if you approve.
एतेषु विजितेष्वद्य भविष्यति मही मम। सर्वे च पृथिवीपालाः सभा सा च महाधना
When these are conquered today, the earth will be mine, along with all the kings and that assembly rich in wealth.
धनञ्जयो वासुदेवो भीमसेनो युधिष्ठिरः। नकुलः सहदेवश्च द्रुपदश्च सहात्मजैः
Dhanañjaya, Vāsudeva, Bhīmasena, Yudhiṣṭhira, Nakula, Sahadeva, and Drupada with his sons—
नैते युधि पराजेतुं शक्या देवगणैरपि। महारथा महेष्वासाः कृतास्त्रा युद्धदुर्मदाः
Even the hosts of gods could not defeat these in battle; they are great chariot-warriors, mighty archers, masters of weapons, and fierce in war.
