ततोऽब्रवीन्महातेजाः सर्वान्भ्रातॄन्युधिष्ठिरः। श्रुतं वै पुरुषव्याघ्रा यन्मां द्वैपायनोऽब्रवीत्
Then the high-souled Yudhishthira addressed all his brothers, saying: 'You have heard what Dvaipayana said to me.'
तदा तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा मरणे निश्चिता मतिः। सर्वक्षत्रस्य निधने यद्यहं हेतुरीप्सितः
Having heard those words, my mind is now resolved upon death; if I am the cause desired for the destruction of all Kshatriyas.
कालेन निर्मितस्तात को ममार्थोऽस्ति जीवतः। एवं ब्रुवन्तं राजानं फाल्गुनः प्रत्यभाषत
Father, fashioned by time, what purpose remains for me in living? As the king spoke thus, Phalguna replied to him.
मा राजन्कश्मलं घोरं प्रविशो बुद्धिनाशनम्। सम्प्रधार्य महाराज यत्क्षमं तत्समाचर
Do not, O king, enter into dreadful despair that destroys wisdom. Consider carefully, great king, and act as is proper.
ततोऽब्रवीत्सत्यधृतिर्भ्रातॄन्सर्वान्युधिष्ठिरः। द्वैपायनस्य वचनं तत्रैव समचिन्तयत्
Then Satyadhriti addressed all his brothers, and there Yudhishthira reflected upon the words of Dvaipayana.
अद्यप्रभृति भद्रं वः प्रतिज्ञां मे निबोधत। त्रयोदश समास्तात को ममार्थो ऽस्ति जीवतः
From this day forward, may good fortune be yours; hear my vow: For thirteen years, father, what purpose remains for me in living?
न प्रवक्ष्यामि परुषं भ्रातॄनन्यांश्च पार्थिवान्। स्थितो निदेशे ज्ञातीनां योक्ष्ये तत्सुमुदाहरन्
I shall not speak harshly to my brothers or other kings; abiding by the command of my kin, I shall act accordingly.
एवं मे वर्तमानस्य स्वसुतेऽष्वितरेषु च। भेदो न भविता लोके भेदमूलो हि विग्रहः
While I conduct myself thus, with my own son and others, there will be no division in the world, for conflict arises from discord.
विग्रहं दूरतो रक्षन्प्रियाण्येव समाचरन्। वाच्यतां न गमिष्यामि लोकेषु मनुजर्षभाः
By keeping conflict at a distance and acting only in what is dear, I shall not become a subject of reproach among men, O best of men.
भ्रातृर्ज्येष्ठस्य वचनं पाण्डवाः संनिशम्य तत। तमेव समवर्तन्त धर्मराजहिते रताः
Having heard the words of their eldest brother, the Pandavas then acted accordingly, devoted to the welfare of the king of righteousness.
संसत्सु समयं कृत्वा धर्मराड्भ्रातृभिः सह। पितॄंस्तर्प्य यथान्यायं देवताश्च विशाम्पते
Having made an agreement among themselves, the king of righteousness, together with his brothers, duly offered oblations to the ancestors and the gods, O lord of men.
कृतमङ्गलकल्यामो भ्रातृभिः पिरवारितः। गतेषु क्षत्रियेन्द्रेषु सर्वेषु भरतर्षभ
Having performed auspicious rites and blessed by his brothers, when all the kings had departed, O bull among the Bharatas,
युधिष्ठिरः सहामात्यः प्रविवेश पुरोत्तमम्। दुर्योधनो महाराज शकुनिश्चापि सौबलः। सभायां समणीयायां तत्रैवास्ते नराधिप
Yudhishthira, accompanied by his ministers, entered the foremost city; King Duryodhana and Shakuni, son of Subala, remained in the splendid assembly hall, O ruler of men.
वसन्दुर्योधनस्तस्यां सभायां पुरुषर्षभ। शनैर्ददर्श तां सर्वां सभां शकुनिना सह
Dwelling in that assembly, O best of men, Duryodhana slowly surveyed the entire hall together with Shakuni.
तस्यां दिव्यानभिप्रायान्ददर्श कुरुनन्दनः। न दृष्टपूर्वा ये तेन नगरे नागसाह्वये
There, O joy of the Kurus, he beheld wondrous marvels, never before seen by him in the city named Nāgasāhvaya.
स कदाचित्सभामध्ये धार्तराष्ट्रो महीपतिः। स्फाटिकं स्थलमासाद्य जलमित्यभिशङ्कया
Once, in the midst of the assembly, King Duryodhana, son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, approached a crystal floor, mistaking it for water.
स्ववस्त्रोत्कर्षणं राजा कृतवान्बुद्धिमोहितः। दुर्मना विमुखश्चैव परिचक्राम तां सभाम्
Confused in mind, the king gathered up his garments, and, downcast and averting his face, walked about that hall.
ततः स्थले निपतितो दुर्मना व्रीडितो नृपः। निः श्वसन्विमुखश्चापि परिचक्राम तां सभाम्
Then, having fallen upon the solid ground, the king, distressed and ashamed, sighed and, turning away, wandered about that hall.
ततः स्फाटिकतोयां वै स्फाटिकाम्बुजशोभिताम्। वापीं मत्वा स्थलमिव सवासाः प्रापतञ्जले
Again, mistaking a crystal-clear pool, adorned with crystal lotuses, for solid ground, he, still clothed, fell into it with joined palms.
जले निपतितं दृष्ट्वा भीमसेनो महाबलः। जहास जहसुश्चैव किङ्कराश्च सुयोधनम्
Seeing Duryodhana fallen in the water, mighty Bhīmasena and the attendants laughed aloud at him.
वासांसि च शुभान्यस्मै प्रददू राजशासनात्। तथागतं तु तं दृष्ट्वा भीमसेनो महाबलः
By the king's command, fine garments were given to him; but seeing him thus, mighty Bhīmasena laughed again.
अर्जुनश्च यमौ चोभौ सर्वे ते प्राहसंस्तदा। नामर्षयत्ततस्तेषामवहासममर्षणः
Arjuna, the two sons of Mādri, and all the others also laughed then; but Duryodhana, unable to endure their mockery, was filled with anger.
आकारं रक्षमाणस्तु न स तान्समुदैक्षत। पुनर्वसनमुत्क्षिप्य प्रतिरिष्यन्निव स्थलम्
Maintaining his composure, he did not look at them; again lifting his garments, as if to cross the floor, he stood there.
आरुरोह ततः सर्वे जहसुश्च पुनर्जनाः। द्वारं तु पिहिताकारं स्फाटिकं प्रेक्ष्य भूमिपः। प्रविशन्नाहतो मूर्ध्नि व्याघूर्णित इव स्थितः
Then, as he climbed up, all the people laughed again; and when the king saw the crystal door appearing closed, entering, he struck his head and stood bewildered.
तादृशं च परं द्वारं स्फाटिकोरुकवाटकम्। विघट्टयन्कराभ्यां तु निष्क्रम्याग्रे पपात हा
And such was another wondrous door, with great crystal panels; as he tried to open it with his hands, he stumbled and fell forward.
द्वारं तु वितताकारं समापेदे पुनश्च सः। तद्वृत्तं चेति मन्वानो द्वारस्थानादुपारमत्
He then came to another door that seemed open, and, reflecting on what had happened, he turned away from the doorkeepers.
एवं प्रलम्भान्विविधान्प्राप्य तत्र विशाम्पते। पाण्डवेयाभ्यनुज्ञातस्ततो दुर्योधनो नृपः
Thus, encountering various illusions there, King Duryodhana, permitted by the sons of Pāṇḍu, departed.
अपहृष्टेन मनसा राजसूये महाक्रतौ। प्रेक्ष्य तामद्भुतामृद्धिं जगाम गजसाह्वयम्
With a heart far from joyful, having witnessed that wondrous prosperity at the great Rājasūya sacrifice, he returned to Hastināpura.
पाण्डवश्रीप्रतप्तस्य ध्यायमानस्य गच्छतः। दुर्योधनस्य नृपतेः पापा मतिरजायत
As King Duryodhana, scorched by the glory of the Pāṇḍavas, walked away, he fell into evil thoughts.
पार्थान्सुमनसो दृष्ट्वा पार्थिवांश्च वशानुगान्। कृत्स्नं चापि हितं लोकमाकुमारं कुरूद्वह
Seeing the Pāṇḍavas content, the kings obedient to them, and the whole world, including the princes, well-disposed, O joy of the Kurus,
