भेर्यश्च मुरजाश्चैव मड्डुका गोमुखाश्च ये। शृङ्गवंशाम्बुजा वीणाः श्रूयन्ते स्म सहस्रशः
Thousands of drums, murajas, maddukas, gomukhas, horns, flutes, lotuses, and vinas were heard.
लोकेऽस्मिन्सर्वविप्राश्च वैश्याः शूद्रा नृपादयः। सर्वे म्लेच्छाः सर्वगणास्त्वादिमध्यान्तजास्तथा
In that place, all Brahmins, Vaishyas, Shudras, kings, and even all foreigners of every group—those born at the beginning, middle, and end—were present.
नानादेशसमुद्भूतैर्नानाजातिभिरागतैः। पर्याप्त इव लोकोऽयं युधिष्ठिरनिवेशने
With people from many regions and of many races gathered, it seemed as if the whole world was contained in Yudhishthira's residence.
भीष्मद्रोणादयः सर्वे कुरवः ससुयोधनाः। वृष्णयश्च समग्राश्च पाञ्चालाश्चापि सर्वशः
All the Kurus, including Bhishma, Drona, and Suyodhana, as well as all the Vrishnis and Panchalas, were present.
यज्ञेऽस्मिन्सर्वकर्माणि चक्रुर्दासा इव क्रतौ। एवं प्रवृत्तो यज्ञः स धर्मराजस्य धीमतः
In that sacrifice, all duties were performed as if by servants in a ritual; thus proceeded the sacrifice of the wise king of dharma.
शुशुभे च महाबाहो सोमस्येव क्रतुर्यथा। वस्त्राणि कम्बलांश्चैव प्रावारांश्चैव सर्वदा
It shone, O mighty-armed one, like the Soma sacrifice, with garments, blankets, and cloaks always present.
निष्कहेमजभाण्डानि भूषणानि च सर्वशः। प्रददौ तत्र विप्राणां धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः
There, King Yudhishthira, lord of dharma, gave to the Brahmins all kinds of gold, ornaments, and jewelry.
यानि तत्र महीपालैर्लब्धवान्भरतर्षभः। तानि सर्वाणि रत्नानि ब्राह्मणानां ददौ तदा
Whatever gems the bull among the Bharatas had received from the assembled kings, he gave all of them to the Brahmins at that time.
ततः स कुरुराजस्य सर्वकर्मसमृद्धिमान्। यज्ञः प्रीतिकरो राजन्संबभौ विपुलोत्सवः
Then that sacrifice of the Kuru king, accomplished in every detail, brought joy, O king, and was celebrated with great festivity.
शान्तविघ्नः सुखारम्भः प्रभूतधनधान्यवान्। अन्नवान्बहुभक्ष्यश्च केशवेन सुरक्षितः
Free from obstacles, beginning in happiness, abundant in wealth and grain, full of food and many delicacies, it was protected by Kesava.
समापयामास च तं राजसूयं महाक्रतुम्। `कोटिसहस्रं प्रददौ ब्राह्मणानां महात्मनाम्
He completed that royal sacrifice, the great rite, and gave a crore of gold coins to the noble Brahmins.
न करिष्यति तं लोके कश्चिदन्यो महीपतिः। याजकाः सर्वकामैश्च सततं ततृपुर्धनैः
No other king in the world will perform such a sacrifice; the officiants were always satisfied with every desired wealth.
ततश्चावभृथस्नातः स राजा पाण्डुनन्दनः। व्यासं धौम्यं वसिष्ठं च नारदं च महामुनिम्
Then, having bathed at the conclusion of the sacrifice, that king, son of Pandu, honored Vyasa, Dhaumya, Vasishtha, and the great sage Narada.
सुमन्तु जैमिनिं पैलं वैशम्पायनमेव च। याज्ञवल्क्यं च कपिलं कपालं कौशिकं तथा। सर्वांश्च ऋत्विक्प्रवरान्पूजयामास सत्कृतान्
He also honored Sumantu, Jaimini, Paila, Vaishampayana, Yajnavalkya, Kapila, Kapala, Kaushika, and all the foremost officiating priests, treating them with due respect.
युष्मत्प्रसादात्प्राप्तोऽयं राजसूयो महाक्रतुः। जनार्दनप्रसादाद्धि सम्पूर्णो मे मनोरथः
By your grace, this great Rajasuya sacrifice has been accomplished; indeed, by Janardana’s favor, my heart’s desire has been fulfilled.
अथ यज्ञं समाप्यान्ते पूजयामास माधवम्। बलदेव च देवेशं भीष्माद्यांश्च कुरूद्वहान्
Then, at the end of the sacrifice, he worshipped Madhava, as well as Baladeva, the lord of gods, and the foremost of the Kurus, beginning with Bhishma.
ततस्त्ववभृथस्नातं धर्मात्मानं युधिष्ठिरम्। समस्तं पार्थिवं क्षत्रमुपगम्येदमब्रवीत्
Then, after Yudhishthira, righteous in soul, had bathed at the conclusion of the sacrifice, all the assembled kings approached him and spoke these words.
दिष्ट्या वर्धसि धर्मज्ञ साम्राज्यं प्राप्तवानसि। आजमीढाजमीढानां यशः संवर्धितं त्वया
By fortune you prosper, knower of dharma, and have attained imperial sovereignty; the fame of the Ajamidhas has been increased by you.
कर्मणैतेन राजेन्द्र धर्मश्च सुमहान्कृतः। आपृच्छामो नरव्याघ्र सर्वकामैः सूपूजिताः
By this act, O king of kings, you have performed a great deed of righteousness; O tiger among men, having been duly honored with all desires fulfilled, we take our leave.
स्वराष्ट्राणि गमिष्यामस्तदनुज्ञातुमर्हसि। श्रुत्वा तु वचनं राज्ञां धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः
We shall return to our own kingdoms; you should grant us permission. Hearing the words of the kings, King Yudhishthira, lord of dharma,
यथार्हं पूज्य नृपतीन्भ्रातॄन्सर्वानुवाच ह। राजानः सर्व एवैते प्रीत्याऽस्मान्प्तमुपागताः
Having duly honored the kings and all his brothers, spoke to them: 'All these kings have come to us with affection.'
प्रस्थिताः स्वानि राष्ट्राणि मामापृच्छय परन्तपाः। अनुव्रजत भद्रं वो विषयान्तं नृपोत्तमान्
'These scorcher of foes, having taken leave of me, have set out for their own kingdoms. Escort these foremost kings to the borders of their realms, with blessings.'
भ्रातुर्वचनमाज्ञाय पाण्डवा धर्मचारिणः। यथार्हं नृपतीन्सर्वानेकैकं समनुव्रजन्
Obeying their brother’s command, the righteous Pandavas escorted each of the kings, as was proper.
विरायटमन्वायात्तूर्णं धृष्टह्युम्नः प्रतापवान्। धनञ्जयो यज्ञसेनं महात्मानं महारथम्
The valiant Dhrishtadyumna quickly accompanied the mighty Yajnasena; Dhananjaya escorted the great-souled, great chariot-warrior Yajnasena.
भीष्मं च धृतराष्ट्रं च भीमसेनो महाबलः। द्रोणं तु ससुतं वीरं सहदेवो युधां पतिः
Bhimasena, of great strength, escorted Bhishma and Dhritarashtra; Sahadeva, lord of warriors, escorted the heroic Drona with his son.
नकुलः सुबलं राजन्सहपुत्रं समन्वयात्। द्रौपदेयाः ससौभद्राः पार्वतीयान्महारथान्
Nakula accompanied King Subala with his son; the sons of Draupadi, along with Saubhadra, escorted the great chariot-warriors from Parvati’s line.
अन्वगच्छंस्तथैवान्यान्क्षत्रियान्क्षत्रियर्षभाः। एवं सुपूजिताः सर्वे जग्मुर्विप्राः सहस्रशः
In the same way, the best of the Kshatriyas escorted other Kshatriyas. Thus, having been duly honored, all the Brahmanas departed by the thousands.
गतेषु पार्थिवेन्द्रेषु सर्वेषु ब्राह्मणेषु च। युधिष्ठिरमुवाचेदं वासुदेवः प्रतापवान्
When all the kings and Brahmanas had departed, the mighty Vasudeva spoke these words to Yudhishthira.
आपृच्छे त्वां गमिष्यामि द्वारकां कुरुनन्दन। राजसूयं क्रतुश्रेष्ठं दिष्ट्या त्वं प्राप्तवानसि
'I take my leave of you, son of Kuru; I shall go to Dvaraka. By fortune, you have attained the Rajasuya, the foremost of sacrifices.'
तमुवाचैवमुक्तस्तु धर्मराजो जनार्दनम्। तव प्रसादाद्गोविन्द प्राप्तः क्रतुवरो मया
Thus addressed, King Yudhishthira said to Janardana: 'By your grace, Govinda, I have accomplished this greatest of sacrifices.'
