Indeed, this is the unwavering energy and resolve of Hari, the mighty-armed one; it is Hari himself who now sets his mind to reclaim it.
By this, O tiger among Kurus, the king of Cedi, like a tiger, roars exceedingly, this man of evil mind, disregarding all of us.
Then the king of Cedi could not endure Bhishma's words at that time; enraged, he spoke again to Bhishma in reply.
Let this power of Kesava, O Bhishma, be for our enemies, since you are always rising like a bard to sing his praises.
If, Bhishma, you delight in praising others, then praise this king, abandoning Janardana.
Praise Darada, praise this king of the Bahlika, the foremost among rulers, by whom the earth was torn at his birth.
Praise Karna, O Bhishma, the overseer of the Vanga and Anga lands, equal in strength to thousand-eyed Indra, the great bowman.
He whose these divine earrings are, innate and fashioned by the gods, and whose armor, O mighty-armed one, shines like the rising sun.
By whom Jarasandha, nearly invincible and equal to Indra, was conquered in hand-to-hand combat and brought to the point of death.
Praise Drona and Drona's son, the father and son, great chariot-warriors; both are always worthy of praise, O Bhishma, foremost among twice-born.
Of these two, O Bhishma, if either becomes enraged, I believe he could make this entire world of moving and unmoving beings devoid of life.
For in battle I see no king equal to Drona, nor to Ashvatthama, O Bhishma, yet you do not wish to praise them.
Who on this earth, bounded by the sea, could be his equal? Yet you overlook King Duryodhana, the mighty-armed ruler.
And Jayadratha, the king, skilled in weapons and firm in valor; Druma, the teacher of the Kimpurushas, renowned for his prowess—passing over these men of great might, why do you praise Kesava?
And the aged teacher of the Bharatas, as well as Kripa, son of Sharadvat, both of great valor—passing over them, why do you praise Kesava?
And Rukmi, the foremost among bowmen, the best of men—passing over him, of great might, why do you praise Kesava?
And Bhishmaka, of great valor, and Dantavakra, the king; Bhagadatta, Yupa-ketu, and Jayatsena, the king of Magadha.
And both Virata and Drupada, and Shakuni of great strength; Vindya and Anuvindya of Avanti, Pandya, Shveta, and Uttama.
The illustrious Shankha, the proud Vriṣasena, the valiant Ekalavya, and the great chariot-warrior Kāliṅga—
Surpassing these mighty heroes, why do you praise Keśava? And why do you not extol kings like Śalya and the others? If your mind is set on praising, Bhīṣma, then praise the kings of the earth.
What can I do, O king, if you, though aged, have not heard the words of the righteous spoken in times past?
Self-reproach and self-praise, disparaging others and praising others—such conduct is not practiced by the noble; surely, Bhīṣma, you have not heard this.
Whatever is to be praised, you always, out of delusion and devotion, praise Keśava; but, Bhīṣma, no one approves of this.
How do you, out of mere desire, attribute everything to the cowherd of the Bhojas, that evil-minded man?
But if your understanding does not return to its nature, O Bhārata, I have already spoken of this before, like the kuliṅga bird.
There is a bird called kuliṅga, dwelling near the slopes of the Himalayas; its words are always heard, full of fear and lacking in sense.
It constantly cries out, 'Do not act rashly,' yet, acting rashly itself, it does not realize its own behavior.
Indeed, Bhīṣma, that bird, with little sense, snatches the flesh stuck between the teeth of a lion as it eats.
While the lion is alive and watching, Bhīṣma, it does this without doubt; just so, you, unrighteous one, always speak such words.
While the kings of the earth are alive and watching, Bhīṣma, you live without doubt; in deeds hated by the world, there is no one equal to you.
