महेन्द्रशिखरे चैव निमेषान्तरचारिणौ। जग्राह भरतश्रेष्ठ वानरावभितश्चरौ
And on the summit of Mahendra, O best of Bharatas, he seized two monkeys who moved in the blink of an eye, as they roamed about.
इरावत्यां महाभोजो वह्निसूर्यसमो बले। गोपतिस्तालकेतुश्च निहतौ शार्ङ्गधन्वना
On the Iravati, the mighty Gopati and Talaketu, whose strength was equal to fire and the sun, were slain by the wielder of Sharnga.
अक्षप्रपत्तने राजन्नवहेलनतत्परौ। उभौ तावपि कृष्णेन स्वराष्ट्रे विनिपातितौ
At the city of Akshaprapatana, O king, both those who were intent on disrespect were struck down by Krishna in Svarashtra.
दग्धा वाराणसी तात केशवेन महात्मना। पाण्ड्यं पौण्ड्रं च मात्स्यं च कलिङ्गं च जनार्दनः
Varanasi was burned, dear one, by the great-souled Keshava; Pandya, Paundra, Matsya, and Kalinga were all struck down by Janardana.
जघान सहितान्सर्वानङ्गराजं च माधवः
Madhava slew all of them together, including the king of Anga.
एष चैव शतं हत्वा रथेन क्षत्रपुङ्गवान्। गान्धारीमवहत्कृष्णो महिषीं यादवर्षभः
Having slain a hundred foremost Kshatras with his chariot, Krishna, the bull among the Yadus, brought Gandhari as his queen.
अथ गाण्डीवधन्वानं क्रीडार्थं मधुसूदनः। जिगाय भरतश्रेष्ठ कुन्त्याश्च प्रमुखे विभुः
Then Madhusudana, for sport, defeated the wielder of Gandiva, O best of Bharatas, in the presence of Kunti.
द्रौणिं कृपं च कर्णं च भीमसेनं सुयोधनम्। युद्धाय सहितान्त्राजञ्जिगाय भरतर्षभ
He overcame Drona's son, Kripa, Karna, Bhimasena, and Suyodhana, all assembled for battle, O bull among the Bharatas.
बभ्रोश्च प्रियमन्विच्छन्नेष चक्रगदाधरः। वेणुदारिवृतां भार्यां प्रममाथ युधिष्ठिर
Desiring to please Babhru, this wielder of discus and mace subdued in battle the wife surrounded by Venudari, O Yudhishthira.
पर्याप्तां पृथिवीं सर्वां साश्वां सरथकुञ्जराम्। वेणुदारिवशे युक्तां जिगाय मधुसूदनः
Madhusudana conquered the entire earth, with its horses, chariots, and elephants, all brought under the control of Venudari.
अवाप्य तपसा वीर्यं बलमोजश्च भारत। त्रासिताः सगणाः सर्वे बाणेन विबुधाधिपाः
Having attained strength, power, and energy through austerity, O Bharata, all the lords of the gods, with their retinues, were terrified by Bana.
वज्राशनिगदाबामैस्ताडयद्भिरनेकशः। तस्य नासीद्रणे मृत्युर्देवैरपि सवासवैः
Though struck repeatedly by thunderbolts, clubs, and maces, even the gods with Indra could not bring death to him in battle.
सोऽभिभूतश्च कृष्णेन न हतश्च मगात्मना। छित्वा बाहुसहस्रं तु गोविन्देन महात्मना
He was subdued by Krishna but not slain by the great-souled one; Govinda, the mighty one, cut off his thousand arms.
एषोऽपीडन्महाबाहुः कंसं च मधुसूदनः। अवाप्तं तपसा वीर्यं बलमोजश्च भारत। कैटभं चातिलोमानि निजघान जनार्दनः
This mighty-armed Madhusudana also slew Kamsa, and having obtained strength, power, and energy through austerity, O Bharata, Janardana killed Kaitabha and Atirakshasa.
जम्बुमैरावतं चैव विरूपं च महायशाः। घान भरतश्रेष्ठ शम्बरं चारिमर्दनम्
He, the illustrious one, slew Jambumairavata, Virupa, and Shambara, the crusher of enemies, O best of the Bharatas.
एष भोगवतीं गत्वा वासुकिं भरतर्षभ। निर्जित्य पुण्डरीकाक्षो रौक्मिणेयममोचयत्
Having gone to Bhogavati, O bull among the Bharatas, the lotus-eyed one conquered Vasuki and freed Rukmini's son.
एवं बहूनि कर्माणि शिशुरेव जनार्दनः। कृतवान्पुण्डरीकाक्षः सङ्कर्षणसहायवान्
Thus, even as a child, Janardana, the lotus-eyed one, performed many such deeds, accompanied by Sankarshana.
एवमेषोऽसुराणां चसुराणामपि सर्वशः। भयामयकरः कृष्णः सर्वलोकेश्वरः प्रभुः
In this way, Krishna, the lord of all worlds, the master, became the cause of fear for all asuras and even for the devas.
एवमेव महाबाहुः शास्ता सर्वदुरात्मनाम्। कृत्वा देवार्थममितं स्वस्थानं प्राप्स्यते पुनः
In this very manner, the mighty-armed one, the chastiser of all evil-doers, after accomplishing countless acts for the sake of the gods, will return again to his own place.
एष भोगवतीं पुण्यां रविकान्तिं महायशाः। द्वारकामात्मसात्कृत्वा सागरं प्लावयिष्यति
He, of great fame, will make Dvaraka, the blessed city shining with the radiance of the sun, his own, and will cause the ocean to flood it.
सुरासुरमनुष्येषु नाभून्न भविता क्वचित्। यस्तामध्यवसद्राजा नान्यत्र मधुसूदनात्
Among gods, asuras, and humans, there has never been, nor will there ever be, any king who dwelt there, except for Madhusudana.
भ्राजमानास्तु वै सर्वे वृष्ण्यन्धकमहारथाः। तेजिष्ठं प्रतिपत्स्यन्ते नाकपृष्टं गतासवः
All the illustrious great warriors of the Vrishni and Andhaka clans, shining brightly, will attain the highest heaven after their lives depart.
एवमेव दशार्हाणां विधाय विधिना विधिम्। विष्णुर्नारायणः साक्षात्स्वस्थानं प्राप्स्यते ध्रुवम्
In this way, having fulfilled the destined purpose for the Dasharhas according to ordinance, Vishnu, Narayana himself, will surely return to his own eternal place.
अप्रमेयोऽनियोज्यश्च यत्र कामगमो वशी। मोदते भगवान्प्रीतो वालः क्रीडानकैरिव
He is immeasurable, unrestrained, moving as he wishes, self-controlled; the blessed Lord delights, pleased, like a boy with his playthings.
नैष गर्भत्वमापेदे न योन्यामावसत्प्रभुः। आत्मनस्तेजसा कृष्णः सर्वेषां कुरुते गतिम्
This Lord did not enter the womb nor dwell in a woman's body; by his own power, Krishna determines the course of all beings.
यथा बुद्बुद उत्थाय तत्रैव प्रविलीयते। चराचराणि भूतानि तथा नारायणे सदा
Just as a bubble arises and dissolves in the same place, so too do all moving and unmoving beings always merge in Narayana.
न प्रमातुं महाबाहुः शक्यो भारत केशवः। परं हि परतस्तस्माद्विश्वरूपान्न विद्यते
O Bharata, mighty-armed Keshava cannot be comprehended; there is nothing beyond him, the supreme of the supreme, of whom the universe is the form.
एवमुक्त्वा ततो भीष्णो विरराम महाबलः। व्याजहारोत्तरं तत्र सहदेवोऽर्थवद्वचः
Having spoken thus, the mighty Bhishma fell silent; then Sahadeva spoke fitting words in reply.
केशवं केशिहन्तारमप्रमेयपराक्रमम्। पूज्यमानं मया यो वः कृष्णं न सहते नृपाः
Any king among you who cannot endure Krishna, the slayer of Kesi, of immeasurable prowess, being honored by me—
सर्वेषां बलिनां मूर्ध्नि मयेदं निहितं पदम्। एवमुक्ते मया सम्यगुत्तरं प्रब्रवीतु सः
—on the head of all the mighty ones, I have placed this foot; if anyone has an answer to this, let him speak now.
