अर्चितो यदुमुख्यैश्च भगवान्वासवानुजः। ततः पार्थिवमायान्तं सहितं सर्वराजभिः। सरस्वत्यां जरासन्धमजयत्पुरुषोत्तमः
Honored by the foremost of the Yadus, the blessed younger brother of Indra then defeated Jarasandha, who had come with all the kings, on the Sarasvati, O best of men.
शूरसेनपुरं त्यक्त्वा ततो यादवनन्दनः। द्वारकां भगवान्कृष्णः प्रत्यपद्यत भारत
Then, O Bharata, the blessed Krishna, delight of the Yadavas, left the city of Shurasena and went to Dvaraka.
ततो महात्मा यानानि रत्नानि विविधानि च। यथार्हं पुण्डरीकाक्षो नैर्ऋतात्प्रत्यपद्यत
After that, the great-souled, lotus-eyed one received vehicles and various gems as was fitting, from the direction of the southwest.
तत्र विघ्नं चरन्ति स्म दैतेयाः सहदानवैः। ताञ्जघान महाबाहुर्वरमत्तान्महासुरान्
There, Daityas along with Danavas used to cause obstacles, but the mighty-armed one struck down those great, intoxicated asuras.
स विघ्नमकरोत्तत्र नरको नाम नैर्ऋतः। अदितिं धर्षयामास कुण्डलार्थं युधिष्ठिर
There, a Nairrita named Naraka created an obstacle; he violated Aditi for the sake of her earrings, O Yudhishthira.
न चासुरगणैः सर्वैः सहितैः कर्म तत्पुरा। कृतपूर्वं महाघोरं यदकार्षीन्महासुरः
Never before had any asura, even with all the asura hosts, performed such a terrible deed as that great asura did.
यं मही सुषुवे देवी यस्य प्राग्ज्योतिषं पुरम्। विषयान्तपालाश्चत्वारो यस्यासन्युद्धदुर्मदाः
The earth herself gave birth to him, and his city was Pragjyotisha; he had four guardians of his territory, all fierce and proud in battle.
आदेवयानमावृत्य पन्थानं पर्यवस्थिताः। त्रासनाः सुरसङ्घानां विरूपै राक्षसैः सह
They stood, blocking the path to the divine vehicle, together with hideous rakshasas, terrifying the hosts of gods.
हयग्रीवो निकुम्भश्च घोरः पञ्चजनस्तदा। मुरः पुत्रसहस्रैश्च वरमत्तो महासुरः
Hayagriva, Nikumbha, the dreadful Panchajana, and Mura—an intoxicated great asura with thousands of sons—were there.
तद्वधार्थं महाबाहुरेष चक्रगदासिभृत्। जातो वृष्णिषु देवक्यां वासुदेवो जनार्दनः
For the destruction of these, the mighty-armed Vasudeva Janardana, wielder of discus, mace, and sword, was born among the Vrishnis from Devaki.
तस्यास्य पुरुषेन्द्रस्यलोकप्रथिततेजसः। निवासो द्वारकायां तु विदितो वः प्रधानतः
The dwelling of this foremost of men, whose glory is renowned in the world, is well known to you all as Dvaraka.
अतीव हि पुरी रम्या द्वारका वासवक्षयात्। अतिवैराजमप्यद्धा प्रत्यक्षस्ते युधिष्ठिर
Indeed, Dvaraka is a most beautiful city, surpassing even the abode of Indra; you have seen it directly, O Yudhishthira.
तस्मिन्देवपुरप्रख्ये सा सभा वृष्ण्युपाश्रया। सुधर्मेति च विख्याता योजनायतविस्तृता
In that city, resembling a city of the gods, is the assembly hall of the Vrishnis, known as Sudharma, vast in length and breadth.
तत्र वृष्ण्यन्दकाः सर्वे रामकृष्णपुरोगमाः। लोकयात्रामिमां कृत्स्नां परिरक्षन्त आसते
There, all the Vrishnis and Andhakas, led by Rama and Krishna, sit protecting the entire course of the world.
तत्रासीनेषु सर्वेषु कदाचिद्भरतर्षभ। दिव्यगन्धा ववुर्वाताः कुसुमानां च वृष्टयः
There, as all were seated, O best of the Bharatas, at one time, divine-scented breezes blew, and showers of flowers fell.
ततः सूर्यसहस्राभस्तेजोराशिर्महाद्भुतः। मध्ये तु तेजसस्तस्य पाण्डरं गजमास्थितः
Then, a mass of radiance, wondrous and like a thousand suns, appeared in the midst of that brilliance, mounted upon a white elephant.
वृतो देवगणैः सर्वैर्वासवः प्रत्यदृश्यत।। रामकृष्णौ च राजा च वृष्ण्यन्धकगणैः सह
Surrounded by all the hosts of gods, Indra was seen; and Rama, Krishna, and the king were there with the Vṛṣṇi and Andhaka clans.
उत्पत्य सहसा देवे नमस्कारमकुर्वत।। सोऽवतीर्य गजात्तूर्णं परिष्वज्य जनार्दनम्
Suddenly rising up, the gods offered their salutations; and he, swiftly descending from the elephant, embraced Janardana.
सस्वजे बलदेवं च राजानं च तमाहुकम्।। वासुदेवोद्धवौ चैव विकद्रुं च महामतिम्
He embraced Baladeva as well, and that king, the son of Ahuka; also Vāsudeva, Uddhava, and the wise Vikadru.
प्रद्युम्नसाम्बनिशठाननिरुद्धं च सात्यकिम्।। गदं सारणमक्रूरं भानुझल्लिविडूरथान्
He embraced Pradyumna, Sāmba, Niśaṭha, Aniruddha, and Sātyaki; Gada, Sāraṇa, Akrūra, Bhānu, Jhallika, and Vidūratha.
तथैव कृतवर्णाणां चारुदेष्णं महाबलम्।। देवकल्पान्महाराज तान्दाशार्हपुरोगमान्
Likewise, the mighty Cārudeṣṇa among those of distinguished lineage; O king, those foremost among the Dāśārhas, who were like gods.
पिरिष्वज्य च दृष्ट्वा च भगवान्भूतभावनः।। वृष्ण्यन्धकमहामात्रान्परिष्वज्याथ वासवः
Having embraced and seen them, the blessed Lord, creator of beings, embraced the great ministers of the Vṛṣṇis and Andhakas, and then Indra—
प्रगृह्य पूजां तैर्दत्तां भगवान्पाकशासनः।। सोऽदितेर्वचनात्तात कुण्डलार्थे जनार्दनम्
Having accepted the worship offered by them, the blessed slayer of Vṛtra, at Aditi's command, O dear one, spoke to Janardana regarding the earrings:
निहत्य नरकं भौममाहरिष्यामि कुण्डले
I will slay Naraka, the son of Bhumi, and bring back the earrings.
एवमुक्त्वाऽथ गोविन्दो राममेवाभ्यभाषत।। प्रद्युम्नमनिरुद्धं च साम्बं चाप्रतिमं बले
Having spoken thus, Govinda then addressed Rama, Pradyumna, Aniruddha, and Sāmba, unrivaled in strength.
एतांश्चोच्त्का तथा तत्र वासुदेवो महायशाः।। अथारुह्य सुपर्णं वै शङ्खचक्रगदासिभृत्
Having thus spoken to them, the illustrious Vāsudeva mounted Garuḍa, bearer of conch, discus, mace, and sword.
ययौ तदा हृषीकेशो देवानां हितकाम्यया।। तं प्रयान्तममित्रघ्नं देवाः सहपुरन्दराः
Then Hṛṣīkeśa departed, desiring the welfare of the gods; and as he went, the gods together with Indra—
पृष्ठतोऽनुययुः प्रीत्या स्तुवन्तो विष्णुमच्युतम्। उग्रान्त्रक्षोगणान्हत्वा नरकस्य महासुरान्
Followed behind him with joy, praising Viṣṇu, the unwavering one; and having slain the fierce hosts of attendants and the great asuras of Naraka.
क्षुरान्तान्मौरवान्पाशान्षट्सहस्रं ददर्श सः।। स़ञ्छिद्य पाशाच्छस्त्रेण मुरं हत्वा सहान्वयम्
He saw six thousand nooses of Mura, ending in razors; cutting the nooses with his weapon, he slew Mura along with his sons.
शैलसङ्घानतिक्रम्य निशुम्भं च व्यपोथयत्
Surpassing the mountain ranges, he struck down Niśumbha as well.
