सर्वेषामेव भूतानां विस्मयः समजायत। आसनानि च सर्वाणि गवाश्वं च धनादिकम्
Amazement arose among all beings; all seats, cattle, horses, and wealth,
सर्वं तदुपजहाते गुरवे रामकेशवौ। गदापरिघयुद्धे च सर्वास्त्रेषु च केशवः
All of that was offered to the teacher by Rama and Kesava; in the battle of maces and iron clubs, and in all weapons, Kesava
परमां मुख्यतां प्राप्तः सर्वलोकेषु विश्रुतः। कश्च नारायणादन्यः सर्वरत्नविभूषितम्
Attained the highest distinction, renowned among all worlds; who other than Narayana, adorned with all jewels,
रथमादित्यसङ्काशमातिष्ठेत शचीपतेः। कस्य चाप्रतिमो यन्ता वज्रपाणेः प्रियः सखा
Could stand upon a chariot shining like the sun, belonging to the lord of Shachi? Who else is an incomparable charioteer, the dear friend of the wielder of the thunderbolt?
मातलिः सङ्गृहीता स्यादन्यत्र पुरुषोत्तमात्। भोजराजात्मजो वापि कंसस्तात युधिष्ठिर
Matali would be chosen anywhere except by the Supreme Person; or the son of King Bhoja, or Kamsa, O Yudhishthira,
अस्त्रजाते बले वीर्ये कार्तवीर्यसमोऽभवत्। तस्य भोजपतेः पुत्राद्भोजराजन्यवर्धनात्
In weapons, strength, and valor, he became equal to Kartavirya; from the son of the Bhoja king, the enhancer of the Bhoja dynasty,
उद्विजन्ते स्म राजानः सुपर्णादिव पन्नगाः। चित्रकार्मुकनिस्त्रिंशविमलप्रासयोधिनः
The kings trembled like serpents before Garuda; those who fought with decorated bows, swords, and spotless spears,
शतं शतसहस्राणि पादातास्तस्य भारत। अष्टौ शतसहस्राणि शूराणामनिवर्तिनाम्
A hundred hundred-thousands of foot soldiers belonged to him, O Bharata; eight hundred-thousands of heroes who never turned back,
अभवन्भोजराजस्य जाम्बूनदमया ध्वजाः। रुक्मकाञ्चनकक्ष्यास्तु रथास्तस्य युधिष्ठि
The banners of the Bhoja king were made of gold; his chariots, O Yudhishthira, had golden and gold-plated sides,
अभवन्भोजपुत्रस्य द्विपास्तावद्धि तद्बलम्। चित्रकार्मुकनिस्त्रिंशविमलप्रासयोधिनाम्
The elephants of the Bhoja prince were as many as his army; those who fought with decorated bows, swords, and spotless spears,
षोडशाश्वसहस्राणि किंशुकाभानि तस्य वै। अपरस्तु महाव्यूहः किशोरणां युधिष्ठिर
Sixteen thousand horses, resembling the kimshuka flower, belonged to him; another great formation of young warriors, O Yudhishthira,
आरोहवरसम्पन्नो दुर्धर्षः केनचिद्बलान्। स च षोडशसाहस्रः कंसभ्रातृपुरः सरः
Endowed with excellent riders, invincible by any force; and those sixteen thousand, led by Kamsa's brothers,
सुनामा सर्वतस्त्वेनं स कंसं पर्यपालयत्। सगणो मिश्रको नाम षष्टिमसाहस्र उच्यते
Sunama guarded Kamsa from all sides; his group called Mishraka is said to number sixty thousand,
कंसरोषमहावेगां वैवस्वतवशानुगाम्।। मत्तद्विपमहाग्राहां वैवस्वतवशानुगाम्
With the great speed of Kamsa's wrath, subject to the will of Vaivasvata; with intoxicated elephants and mighty leaders, subject to the will of Vaivasvata,
शस्रजालमहाफेनां सादिवेगमहाजलाम्। गदापरिघपाठीनां नानाकवचशैवलाम्
With nets of weapons and great foam, like a mighty river; with mace and iron club wielders, armored in various ways,
रथनागमहावर्तां नानारुधिरकर्दमाम्। चित्रकार्मुककल्लोलां रथाश्वकलिलह्रदाम्
With great whirlpools of chariots and elephants, muddy with various kinds of blood; with waves of decorated bows, and lakes crowded with chariots and horses,
महामृधनदीं घोरां योधावर्तननिस्वनाम्। कोऽन्यो नारायणादेत्य कंसहन्ता युधिष्ठिर
O Yudhishthira, who else but Narayana, the slayer of Kamsa, could have entered that dreadful river of battle, resounding with the tumult of warriors?
एष शक्ररथे तिष्ठंस्तान्यनीकानि भारत। व्यधमद्भोजपुत्रस्य महाभ्राणीव मारुतः
Standing upon Indra’s chariot, O Bharata, he scattered those armies of the son of Bhoja like a mighty wind dispersing great clouds.
तं सभास्थं सहामात्यं हत्वा कंसं सहान्वयम्। आनयामास मानार्हां देवकीं समुहृद्गणाम्
Having slain Kamsa, along with his ministers and kin, while he sat in the assembly, he brought Devaki, worthy of honor, together with her companions.
यशोदां रोहिणीं चैव अभिवाद्य पुनः पुनः। उग्रसेनं च राजानमभिषिच्य जनार्दनः
Again and again he respectfully greeted Yashoda and Rohini, and Janardana anointed King Ugrasena.
अर्चितो यदुमुख्यैश्च भगवान्वासवानुजः। ततः पार्थिवमायान्तं सहितं सर्वराजभिः। सरस्वत्यां जरासन्धमजयत्पुरुषोत्तमः
Honored by the foremost of the Yadus, the blessed younger brother of Indra then defeated Jarasandha, who had come with all the kings, on the Sarasvati, O best of men.
शूरसेनपुरं त्यक्त्वा ततो यादवनन्दनः। द्वारकां भगवान्कृष्णः प्रत्यपद्यत भारत
Then, O Bharata, the blessed Krishna, delight of the Yadavas, left the city of Shurasena and went to Dvaraka.
ततो महात्मा यानानि रत्नानि विविधानि च। यथार्हं पुण्डरीकाक्षो नैर्ऋतात्प्रत्यपद्यत
After that, the great-souled, lotus-eyed one received vehicles and various gems as was fitting, from the direction of the southwest.
तत्र विघ्नं चरन्ति स्म दैतेयाः सहदानवैः। ताञ्जघान महाबाहुर्वरमत्तान्महासुरान्
There, Daityas along with Danavas used to cause obstacles, but the mighty-armed one struck down those great, intoxicated asuras.
स विघ्नमकरोत्तत्र नरको नाम नैर्ऋतः। अदितिं धर्षयामास कुण्डलार्थं युधिष्ठिर
There, a Nairrita named Naraka created an obstacle; he violated Aditi for the sake of her earrings, O Yudhishthira.
न चासुरगणैः सर्वैः सहितैः कर्म तत्पुरा। कृतपूर्वं महाघोरं यदकार्षीन्महासुरः
Never before had any asura, even with all the asura hosts, performed such a terrible deed as that great asura did.
यं मही सुषुवे देवी यस्य प्राग्ज्योतिषं पुरम्। विषयान्तपालाश्चत्वारो यस्यासन्युद्धदुर्मदाः
The earth herself gave birth to him, and his city was Pragjyotisha; he had four guardians of his territory, all fierce and proud in battle.
आदेवयानमावृत्य पन्थानं पर्यवस्थिताः। त्रासनाः सुरसङ्घानां विरूपै राक्षसैः सह
They stood, blocking the path to the divine vehicle, together with hideous rakshasas, terrifying the hosts of gods.
हयग्रीवो निकुम्भश्च घोरः पञ्चजनस्तदा। मुरः पुत्रसहस्रैश्च वरमत्तो महासुरः
Hayagriva, Nikumbha, the dreadful Panchajana, and Mura—an intoxicated great asura with thousands of sons—were there.
तद्वधार्थं महाबाहुरेष चक्रगदासिभृत्। जातो वृष्णिषु देवक्यां वासुदेवो जनार्दनः
For the destruction of these, the mighty-armed Vasudeva Janardana, wielder of discus, mace, and sword, was born among the Vrishnis from Devaki.
