जमदग्निसुतो राजन्त्रामो नाम स वीर्यवान्। हेहयान्तकरो राजन्स रामो बलिनां वरः
Jamadagni's son, O king, was named Rama, mighty and valiant; he destroyed the Hehayas, O king, and was foremost among the powerful.
कार्तावीर्यो महावीर्यो बलेनाप्रतिमस्तदा। रामेण जामदग्न्येन हतो विषममाचरन्
Kartavirya, of great might and unmatched strength, was slain by Jamadagni's Rama, who acted with severity.
तं कार्तवीर्यं राजानं हेहयानामरिन्दमम्। रथस्थं पार्थिवं रामः पातयित्वाऽवधीद्रणे
That Kartavirya, king and destroyer of the Hehayas, seated in his chariot, was struck down and slain in battle by Rama.
जम्भस्य यज्ञं हत्वा स ऋत्विजश्चैव संस्तरे। जम्भस्य मूर्ध्नि भेत्ता च हन्ता च शतदुन्दुभेः
Having destroyed Jambha's sacrifice and the officiating priests at the altar, he broke the head of Jambha and slew Shatadundubhi.
स एष कृष्णो गोविन्दो जातो भृगुषु वीर्यवान्। सहस्रबाहुमुद्धर्तुं सहस्रजितमाहवे
This Krishna, Govinda, was born among the Bhrigus, mighty, to overthrow the thousand-armed one and defeat Sahasrajit in battle.
क्षत्रियाणां चतुष्पष्टिमयुतानि महायशाः। सरस्वत्यां समेतानि एष वै धनुषाऽजयत्
He, of great fame, conquered sixty-four thousand Kshatriyas assembled on the Sarasvati with his bow.
ब्रह्मद्विषां धे तस्मिन्महस्राणि चतुर्दश। पुनर्जघान शूराणामतिक्रूरो रथर्षभः
Among those who hated Brahmins, he slew fourteen thousand; again, the fierce chariot-warrior killed the valiant ones.
ततो राज्ञां सहस्रं स भङ्क्ता पूर्वमरिन्दमः। सहस्रं मुसलेनाहन्सहस्रमुदकृन्तत
Then, the destroyer of enemies broke a thousand kings before; he slew a thousand with a mace and cut down a thousand with a sword.
चतुर्दशसहस्राणि कृणदूममपाययत्। शिष्टान्ब्रह्मद्विषो जित्वा ततोऽस्नायत भार्गवः
He made fourteen thousand into dust and destroyed them; after conquering the remaining Brahmin-haters, Bhargava then bathed.
रामरामेत्यमिक्रुष्टो ब्राह्मणैः क्षत्रियार्दितैः। निघ्नञ्शतसहस्राणि रामः परशुनाभिभूः
Crying 'Rama, Rama!' the Brahmins, afflicted by the Kshatriyas, called out; Rama, wielding the axe, slew hundreds of thousands.
न ह्यमृष्यत तां वाचमार्तैर्भृशमुदीरिताम्। भृगो रामाभिधावेति यदाऽक्रन्दन्द्विजातयः
For the Brahmanas, greatly afflicted, could not endure that speech, as they cried out, 'Bhrigu! Rama!'
काश्मीरान्दरदान्कुन्तीन्क्षुद्रकान्मालवाञ्छवान्। चेदिकाशिकरूशांश्च ऋषिकान्क्रथकैशिकान्
The Kashmiris, Daradas, Kuntis, Kshudrakas, Malavas, Shavas, Cedis, Kasis, Karushas, Rishikas, and Krathakaishikas—
अङ्गान्वङ्गान्कलिङ्गांश्च मागधान्काशिकोसलान्। रात्रायणान्वीतिहोत्रान्किरातान्कार्तिकावतान्
The Angas, Vangas, Kalingas, Magadhas, Kasis, Kosalas, Ratrayanas, Vitihotras, Kiratas, and Kartikavatas—
एतानन्यांश्च राजन्यान्देशेदेशे सहस्रशः। निकृत्य निशितैर्बाणैः सम्प्रदाय विवस्वते
These and other kings, thousands in each land, he struck down with sharp arrows, offering them to the Sun.
कीर्णा क्षत्रियकोटीभिर्मेरुमन्दरभूषणा। त्रिः सप्तकृत्वः पृथिवी तेन निःक्षत्रिया कृता
Adorned with millions of Kshatriyas, Meru and Mandara were covered; thrice seven times did he make the earth devoid of Kshatriyas.
कृत्वा निःक्षत्रियां चैव भार्गवः स महायशाः। इन्द्रगोपकवर्णस्य जीवञ्जीवनिभस्य च
Having made the earth free of Kshatriyas, that illustrious descendant of Bhrigu filled the rivers and lakes with blood the color of indragopa insects and living beings.
पूरयित्वा च सरितः क्षतजस्य सरांसि च। चकार तर्पणं वीरः पितॄणां तासु तेषु च
And having filled the rivers and pools with blood, the hero performed offerings of satisfaction to his ancestors in those very waters.
सर्वानष्टादश द्वीपान्वशमानीय भार्गवः। सोऽश्वमेधसहस्राणि नरमेधशतानि च
Bringing all the eighteen islands under his sway, Bhrigu's son performed thousands of horse sacrifices and hundreds of human sacrifices.
इष्ट्वा सागरपर्यन्तां काश्यपाय महीं ददौ। तस्याग्रेणानुपर्येति भूमिं कृत्वा विपांसुलाम्
Having performed sacrifices over the earth bounded by the ocean, he gave it to Kashyapa, making the land free of dust before him.
ततः कालकृतां सत्यां भार्गवाय महात्मने। गाधामप्यत्र गायन्ति ये पुराणविदो जनाः
Then, in truth, the story of Kalakrita is sung here about the great-souled Bhrigu, as recounted by those who know the ancient tales, including Gadhi.
वेदिमष्टादशोत्सेधां हिरण्यस्यातिपौरुषीम्। रामेण जामदग्न्येन प्रतिजग्राह काश्यपः
Kashyapa accepted from Rama, son of Jamadagni, an altar of gold, eighteen cubits high, of surpassing worth.
एवमिष्ट्वा महाबाहुः क्रतुभिर्भूरिदक्षिणैः। अन्यद्वर्षशतं रामः सौभे साल्वमयोधयत्
Having performed great sacrifices with abundant gifts, mighty-armed Rama waged war upon Salva in Saubha for another hundred years.
ततः स भृगुशार्दूलस्तं सौभं योधयन्प्रभुः। सुबन्धुरं रथं राजन्नास्थाय भरतर्षभ
Then that tiger among the Bhrigus, the lord, fought Saubha, O best of Bharatas, without mounting the well-yoked chariot.
नग्निकानां कुमारीणां गायन्तीनामुपाशृणोत्। रामराम महाबाहो भृगूणां कीर्तिवर्धन
He heard the maidens of the Nagnikas singing: 'Rama, Rama, mighty-armed one, enhancer of the Bhrigus' fame—'
त्यज शस्त्राणि सर्वाणि न त्वं सौभं वधिष्यसि। शङ्खचक्रगदापाणिर्देवानामभयङ्गरः
'Abandon all weapons; you will not slay Saubha. The one bearing conch, discus, and mace, the terror of the gods—'
युधि प्रद्युम्नसाम्बाभ्यां कृष्णः सौभं वधिष्यति। तच्छ्रुत्वा पुरुषव्याघ्रस्तत एव वनं ययौ
'Krishna, together with Pradyumna and Samba, will slay Saubha in battle.' Hearing this, that tiger among men went at once to the forest.
न्यस्य सर्वाणि शस्त्राणि कालकाङ्क्षी महायशाः। रथं सर्वायुधं चैव शरान्परशुमेव च
Laying aside all weapons, longing for the end, the illustrious one set down his chariot, all his arms, his arrows, and his axe.
धनूंष्यप्सु प्रतिष्ठाप्य रामस्तेपे परं तपः। ह्रियं प्रज्ञां श्रियं कीर्तिं लक्ष्मीं चामित्रकर्शनः
Placing his bows in the waters, Rama undertook supreme austerity, subduing shame, wisdom, prosperity, fame, and fortune, O subduer of foes.
पञ्चाधिष्ठाय धर्मात्मा तं रथं विससर्ज ह। आदिकाले प्रवृत्तं तु व्यभजत्करमीश्वरः
The righteous one, having established five supports, dispatched that chariot; the lord of deeds divided it at the beginning of its movement.
नाघ्नतं श्रद्धया सौभं न ह्यशक्तो महायशाः। जामदग्न्य इति ख्यातो यस्त्वयं भगवानुपिः
Neither of them destroyed Saubha with devotion, nor was the illustrious one incapable; he is renowned as Jāmadagnya, this revered sage.
