तद्धि रूपमुपेन्द्रस्य देवदानवमानवाः। दृष्ट्वा संमुमुहुः सर्वे विष्णुतेजोऽभिपीडिताः
Seeing that form of Upendra, all the gods, Asuras, and humans were bewildered, overwhelmed by Viṣṇu's radiance.
बलिर्बद्धोऽभिमानी च यज्ञवाटे महात्मना। विरोचनकुलं सर्वं पाताले विनिवेशितम्
Bali, proud, was bound at the sacrificial ground by the great soul; the entire lineage of Virocana was consigned to the netherworld.
एवंविधानि कर्माणि कृत्वा गरुडावाहनः। न विस्मयमुपागच्छत्पारमेष्ठ्येन तेजसा
Having performed such deeds, he who rides Garuḍa did not become amazed, endowed as he was with the supreme splendor of the Creator.
स सर्वमसुरैश्वर्यं सम्प्रदाय शचीपतेः। त्रैलोक्यं च ददौ शक्रे विष्णुर्दानवसूदनः
He handed over all the Asuric wealth to the lord of Śacī; Viṣṇu, slayer of the Dānavas, gave the three worlds to Śakra.
एष ते वामनो नाम प्रादुर्भावो महात्मनः। वेदविद्भिर्द्विजैरेतच्छ्रूयते वैष्णवं यशः। मानुषेषु ततो विष्णोः प्रादुर्भावांस्तथा शृणु
This is the incarnation of Vāmana, the great-souled one; this fame of Viṣṇu is heard from the learned twice-born who know the Vedas. Now hear further about the incarnations of Viṣṇu among men.
विष्णोः पुनर्महाभागः प्रादुर्भावो महात्मनः। दत्तात्रेय इति ख्यात ऋषिरासीन्महायशाः
Again, the most glorious incarnation of Viṣṇu, the great-souled one, was the sage renowned as Dattātreya.
तेन नष्टेषु वेदेषु क्रियासु च मखेषु च। चातुर्वर्ण्ये च सङ्कीर्णे धर्मे शिथिलतां गते
When the Vedas were lost, the rituals and sacrifices had ceased, and the fourfold order of society had become confused, and righteousness had weakened—
अभवर्धति चाधर्मे सत्ये नष्टे स्थितेऽनृते। प्रजासु क्षीयमाणासु धर्मे चामूलतां पते
Then unrighteousness increased, truth was lost and falsehood prevailed; as people diminished, righteousness was uprooted.
सयज्ञाः सक्रिया वेदाः प्रत्यानीता हि तेन वै। चातुर्वर्ण्यमसङ्कीर्णं कृतं तेन महात्मना
He restored the Vedas with their sacrifices and rituals; by him, the fourfold order was made pure again, O great one.
स एव वै यदा प्रादाद्धैहयाधिपतेर्वरम्। तं हैहयानामधिपस्त्वर्जुनोऽभिप्रसादयन्
It was he who granted a boon to the lord of the Haihayas, when Arjuna, the lord of the Haihayas, earnestly sought his favor.
वनं पर्यचरन्सम्यक्छुश्रूषुरनुसूयकः। निर्ममो निरहङ्कारो दीर्घकालमतोषयत्
Serving without envy, without possessiveness or pride, Arjuna wandered in the forest, attending well and pleasing him for a long time.
आराध्य दत्तात्रेयं हि अगृङ्णात्स वरानिमान्। आप्तादाप्ततरान्विप्राद्विद्वान्विद्वन्निषेवितात्
Having worshipped Dattātreya, he obtained these boons from the sage, who was honored by the wise and even more by the most learned.
ऋतेऽमरत्वं विप्रेण दत्तात्रेयेण धीमता। वरैश्चतुर्भिः प्रवृत इमान्वव्रे वरान्नृपः
Except for immortality, which the wise Dattātreya did not grant, the king chose these four boons.
श्रीमान्मनस्वी बलवान्सत्यवागनसूयकः। सहस्रबाहुर्भूयासमेषु मे प्रथमो वरः
May I be glorious, high-minded, strong, truthful, and free from envy; may I have a thousand arms—this is my first boon.
जरायुजाण्डजं सर्वं सर्वं चैव चराचरम्। शास्तुमिच्छामि धर्मेण द्वितीयस्त्वेष मे वरः
I wish to rule, in righteousness, over all beings born from womb, egg, and all that moves and does not move—this is my second boon.
पितृन्देवानृषीन्विप्रान्यजेयं विपुलैर्मखैः। अमित्रांश्च शितैर्बाणैस्तृतीयो व्रर एष मे
May I offer great sacrifices to the ancestors, gods, sages, and Brāhmaṇas; may I conquer my enemies with sharp arrows—this is my third boon.
यस्य नासीन्न भविता न चास्ति सदृशः पुमान्। इह वा दिवि वा लोके स मे हन्ता भवेदिति
May there be no man, here or in heaven, who has been or will be my equal; let only he who is my slayer be so.
सोऽर्जुनः कृतवीर्यस्य वरः पुत्रोऽभवद्युधि। स सहस्रं सहस्राणां माहिष्मत्यामवर्धत
Thus Arjuna, son of Kṛtavīrya, obtained the boon and became a son in battle; in Māhiṣmatī he grew to be a thousand among thousands.
स भूमिमखिलां जित्वा द्वीपांश्चापि समुद्रिणः। नभसीवाज्वलत्सूर्यः पुण्यैः कर्मभिर्जुनः
Having conquered the whole earth and the islands surrounded by the sea, Arjuna shone with meritorious deeds like the blazing sun in the sky.
इन्द्रद्वीपं कशेरुं च कामद्वीपं गभस्तितम्। गन्धर्ववरुणद्वीपं सौहृष्टममितप्रभः
He conquered Indradvīpa, Kaśeru, Kāmadvīpa, Gabhastimat, Gandharva, Varuṇadvīpa, and the joyful, immeasurably radiant lands.
पूर्वैरजितपूर्वांश्च द्वीपनजयदर्जुनः। इदं तु कार्तवीर्यस्य बभूवासदृशं जनैः
Arjuna, conqueror of islands never before subdued by the ancients, became renowned among people as Kārtavīrya.
न पूर्वे नापरे तस्य गमिष्यन्ति गतिं नृपाः। यदर्णवे प्रयातस्य वस्त्रं न परिषिच्यते
No kings before or after him will attain his path; when he entered the ocean, even his garments were not wetted.
सौवर्णं सर्वमप्यासीद्विमानवरमुत्तमम्। चतुर्धा व्यभजद्राष्ट्रं तद्विभज्यान्वपालयत्
The entire splendid palace was made of gold; he divided the kingdom into four parts and governed each after apportioning them.
एकांशेनाहरत्सेनामेकांशेनावसद्गृहान्। यस्तु तस्य तृतीयांशो राज्ञोऽभूज्जनसङ्ग्रहे
With one portion he maintained the army, with another he resided in his dwellings; the third portion was used by the king for gathering the people.
आप्तः परमकल्याणस्तेन यज्ञानकल्पयत्। ये दस्यवो ग्रामचरा अरम्ये च वसन्ति ये
Having attained great prosperity, he arranged sacrifices; those who were robbers dwelling in villages or in wild places—
चतुर्थेन तु सोंऽशेन तान्सर्वान्प्रत्यषेधयत्। द्वाराणि नापिधीयन्ते पुरेषु नगरेषु च
With the fourth portion, he restrained all of them; the gates were never closed in towns or cities.
स एव राष्ट्रपालोऽभूत्स्रीपालोऽभवदर्जुनः। स एवासीद्जापालः सः गोपालो विशाम्पते
He became the protector of the kingdom, Arjuna became the guardian of wealth; he was also the protector of sacrifices, and the guardian of cattle, O lord of the people.
शतं वर्षसहस्राणामनुशिष्यार्जुनो महीम्। दत्तात्रेयप्रसादेन एवं राज्यं चकार सः
For a hundred thousand years, Arjuna instructed the earth; by the grace of Dattatreya, he thus ruled the kingdom.
एवं बहूनि कर्माणि चक्रे लोकहिताय सः।। दत्तात्रेय इति ख्यातः प्रादुर्भावो ह्ययं हरेः। कथितो भरतश्रेष्ट शृणु भूयो महात्मनः
In this way, he performed many deeds for the welfare of the world; this manifestation known as Dattatreya is indeed an incarnation of Hari, O best of Bharatas, listen again to the deeds of the great soul.
तथा भृगुकुले जन्म यदर्थं च महात्मनः। जामदग्न्य इति ख्यातः प्रादुर्भावश्च वैष्णवः
Now hear of the birth in the lineage of Bhrigu, and the purpose of the great soul; this manifestation known as Jamadagni's son is indeed a Vaishnava incarnation.
