इडाज्यहोमाहुतिभिर्मन्त्रशिक्षाविशारदैः। तस्मिन्हि ततृपुर्देवास्तते यज्ञे महर्षिभिः
In that sacrifice, the gods were gratified by the learned sages with offerings of clarified butter and oblations, accompanied by mantras.
यथा देवास्तथा विप्रा दक्षिणान्नमहाधनैः। ततृपुः सर्ववर्णाश्च तस्मिन्यज्ञे मुदाऽन्विताः
Just as the gods were satisfied, so too were the Brahmins, with gifts, food, and great wealth; all the social orders rejoiced in that sacrifice.
ततोऽभिषेचनीयेऽह्नि ब्राह्मणा राजभिः सह। अन्तर्वेदीं प्रविविशुः सत्कारार्हा महर्षयः
Then, on the day of the anointing, the Brahmins, together with the kings, entered the sacrificial enclosure; the great sages, worthy of honor, entered as well.
नारदप्रमुखास्तस्यामन्तर्वेद्यां महात्मनः। समासीनाः शुशुभिरे सहराजर्षिभिस्तदा
There, in that enclosure, the illustrious sages, led by Narada, sat together, shining among the royal sages.
समेता ब्रह्मभवने देवा देवर्षयस्तथा। कर्मान्तरमुपासन्तो जजल्पुरमितौजसः
Gathered in the hall of Brahma were the gods and the divine sages, observing the proceedings with great energy.
एवमेतन्न चाप्येवमेवं चैतन्न चान्यथा। इत्यूचुर्बहवस्तत्र वितण्डां वै परस्परम्
There, many engaged in debate, saying, 'It is so,' and 'It is not so,' and, 'It is thus,' and, 'It is otherwise.'
कृशानर्थांस्ततः केचिदकृशांस्तत्र कुर्वते। अकृशांश्च कृशांश्चक्रुर्हेतुभिः शास्त्रनिश्चयैः
Some made subtle points, others countered them; some refuted the unrefuted, and others established the refuted, using reasoning and scriptural conclusions.
तत्र मेधाविनः केचिदर्थमन्यैरुदीरितम्। विचिक्षिपुर्यथा श्येना नभोगतमिवामिषम्
There, some wise men disputed the meanings expressed by others, just as hawks snatch meat flying in the sky.
केचिद्धर्मार्थकुशलाः केचित्तत्र महाव्रताः। रेमिरे कथयन्तश्च सर्वभाष्यविदां वराः
Some were skilled in righteousness and wealth, some were great observers of vows; they delighted, conversing, being foremost among those learned in all commentaries.
सा वेदिर्वेदसम्पन्नैर्देवद्विजमहर्षिभिः। आबभासे समाकीर्णा नक्षत्रैर्द्यौरिवायता
That altar, filled with gods, Brahmins, and great sages learned in the Vedas, shone like the sky adorned with stars.
न तस्यां सन्निधौ शूद्रः कश्चिदासीन्न चाव्रती। अन्तर्वेद्यां तदा राजन्युधिष्ठिरनिवेशने
In that assembly, there was no Shudra nor anyone undisciplined; in that sacrificial enclosure of King Yudhishthira.
तां तु लक्ष्मीवतो लक्ष्मीं तदा यज्ञविधानजाम्। तुतोष नारदः पश्यन्धर्मराजस्य धीमतः
Beholding the splendor born of the ritual, Narada was pleased with the prosperity of the wise king of righteousness.
अथ चिन्तां समापेदे स मुनिर्मनुजाधिप। नारदस्तु तदा पश्यन्सर्वक्षत्रसमागमम्
Then that sage, Narada, seeing the gathering of all the Kshatriyas, entered into thought.
सस्मार च पुरावृत्तां कथां तां पुरुषर्षभ। अंशावतरणे याऽसौ ब्रह्मणो भवनेऽभवत्
He remembered that ancient story, O best of men, which had occurred in the house of Brahma at the time of the descent of the portions.
देवानां सङ्गमं तं तु विज्ञाय कुरुनन्दन। नारदः पुण्डरीकाक्षं सस्मार मनसा हरिम्
Recognizing that assembly of the gods, O descendant of Kuru, Narada remembered in his mind Hari, the lotus-eyed.
साक्षात्स विबुधारिघ्नः क्षत्रे नारायणो विभुः। प्रतिज्ञां पालयंश्चेमां जातः परपुरञ्जयः
There, the slayer of the gods' enemies, Narayana himself, mighty among the Kshatriyas, was born, upholding this very vow, as the conqueror of enemy cities.
न्दिदेश पुरा योऽसौ विबुधान्भूतकृत्स्वयम्। न्योन्यमभिनिघ्नन्तः पुनर्लोकानवाप्स्यथ
He who once instructed the gods himself, who is the creator of beings, when they were destroying each other, again said: 'You shall attain the worlds.'
इति नारायणः शम्भुर्भगवान्भूतभावनः। आदिश्य विबुधान्सर्वानजायत यदुक्षये
Thus Nārāyaṇa, Śambhu, the blessed creator of beings, having directed all the gods, was born at the end of the Yadu line.
क्षितावन्धकवृष्णीनां वंशे वंशभृतां वरः। परया शुशुभे लक्ष्म्या नक्षत्राणामिवोडुराट्
On earth, in the lineage of the Andhakas and Vṛṣṇis, the best of those who uphold the line shone with supreme splendor, like the moon among the stars.
यस्य बाहुबलं सेन्द्राः सुराः सर्व उपासते। सोयं मानुषवन्नाम हरिरास्तेऽरिमर्दनः
He whose arm's strength is worshipped by all the gods, even Indra among them—he, Hari, the crusher of foes, now dwells among men by name.
अहो बत महद्भूतं स्वयम्भूर्यदिदं स्वयम्। आदास्यति पुनः क्षत्रमेवं बलसमन्वितम्
Ah, what a great wonder it is that the self-born Lord himself will once again assume the kṣatriya power, endowed with such might.
इत्येतां नारदश्चिन्तां चिन्तयामास सर्ववित्। हरिं नारायणं ज्ञात्वा यज्ञैरीज्यं तमीश्वरम्
Thus Nārada, the all-knowing, reflected on this thought, recognizing Hari Nārāyaṇa, the Lord who is worshipped through sacrifices.
तस्मिन्धर्मविदां श्रेष्ठो धर्मराजस्य धीमतः। महाध्वरे महाबुद्धिस्तस्थौ स बहुमानतः
There, at the great sacrifice of the wise king Dharmarāja, the best among those who know dharma stood with great respect.
ततः समुदिता मुख्यैर्गुणैर्गुणवतां वराः। बहवो भावितात्मानः पृथक्पृथगरिन्दमाः
Then many foremost among the virtuous, their souls purified, each distinguished by their own qualities, gathered together.
आत्मकृत्यमिति ज्ञात्वा पाञ्चालास्तत्र सर्वशः। समीयुर्वृष्णयश्चैव तदाऽनीकाग्रहारिणः
Knowing it to be their duty, all the Pāñcālas and the Vṛṣṇis, leaders of armies, assembled there at that time.
दाराः सजनामात्या वहन्तो रत्नसञ्चयान्। विकृष्टत्वाच्च देशस्य गुरुभारतया च ते
With their wives, relatives, and ministers, carrying heaps of jewels, they came, burdened by the distance and the weight of their treasures.
ययुः प्रमुदिताः पश्चाद्भगवन्तं समन्वयुः। बलशेषं समुदितं परिगृह्य समन्ततः
Joyful, they set out and followed the Blessed One, gathering the remaining forces all around.
अजश्चक्रायुधः शौरिरमित्रगणमर्दनः। बलाधिकारे निक्षिप्य संमान्यानकदुन्दुभिम्
Aja, wielder of the discus, destroyer of enemy hosts, entrusted the command of the army to Anakadundubhi with honor.
सम्प्रायाद्यादवश्रेष्ठो जयमाने युधिष्ठिरे। उच्चावचमुपादाय धर्मराजाय माधवः
Then the foremost of the Yādavas set out, as Yudhiṣṭhira triumphed, Mādhava bringing various gifts for King Dharma.
धनौघं पुरतः कृत्वा खाण्डवप्रस्थमाययौ। तत्र यज्ञगतान्पश्यंश्चैद्यवर्गसमागतान्
Bringing a great wealth of treasure before him, he arrived at Khāṇḍavaprastha, seeing those gathered for the sacrifice, including the assembly of the Caidyas.
