विसृज्य द्रविडान्सर्वान्गमनायोपचक्रमे। न्यवर्तम ततो धीमान्सहदेवो नराधिपः
Dismissing all the Dravidas, he prepared to depart; then the wise king Sahadeva turned back.
एवं विजित्य तरसा सान्त्वेन विजयेन च। करदान्पार्थिवान्कृत्वा प्रत्यागच्छदरिन्दमः
Thus, having conquered with force, conciliation, and victory, he made the kings pay tribute and the subduer of enemies returned.
रत्नसालमुपादाय ययौ सहनिशाचरः। इन्द्रप्रस्थं विवेशाथ कम्पयन्निव मेदिनीम्
Taking the hall of jewels, the night-wanderer departed; he entered Indraprastha, as if shaking the earth.
दृष्ट्वा युधिष्ठिरं राजन्सहदेवः कृताञ्जलिः। प्रह्वोऽभिवाद्य तस्थौ स पूजितश्चापि तेन वै
Seeing Yudhishthira, Sahadeva, with joined palms, bowed low and stood before him, honored by the king.
लङ्काप्राप्तान्धनौघांश्च दृष्ट्वा तान्दुर्लभान्बहून्। प्रीतिमानभवद्राजा विस्मयं परमं ययौ
Beholding the wealth brought from Lanka, so many rare treasures, the king was delighted and filled with utmost wonder.
धर्मराजाय तत्सर्वं निवेद्य भरतर्षभ। कोटीसहस्रमधिकं हिरण्यस्य महात्मने
Reporting all this to Dharmaraja, O best of Bharatas, he presented to the great-souled one more than a crore thousand of gold.
विविधानि च रत्नानि गोजाविमहिषांस्तथा। कृतकर्मा सुखं राजन्नुवास जनमेजय
Various jewels, cows, sheep, and buffaloes as well; having accomplished his task, the king, O Janamejaya, lived happily.
नकुलस्य तु वक्ष्यामि कर्माणि विजयं तथा। वासुदेवजितामाशां यथाऽसावजयत्प्रभुः
Now I shall speak of Nakula's deeds and his victories, and how he conquered the western regions won by Vasudeva.
निर्याय खाण्डवप्रस्थात्प्रतीचीमभितो दिशम्। उद्दिश्य मतिमान्प्रायान्महत्या सेनया सह
Departing from Khandavaprastha, he set out toward the west, wise and accompanied by a great army.
सिंहनादेन महता योधानां गर्जितेन च। रथनेमिनिनादैश्च कम्पयन्वसुधामिमाम्
With mighty lion-roars and the thunder of warriors, and the sound of chariot wheels, he shook this earth.
ततो बहु धनं रम्यं गावाढ्यं धनधान्यवत्। कार्तिकेयस्य दयितं रोहीतकुपाद्रवत्
There he obtained much delightful wealth, rich in cattle, grain, and treasures, beloved of Kartikeya, at Rohitaka and Kupadra.
तत्र युद्धं महच्चासीच्छूरैर्मत्तमयूरकैः। मरुभूमिं स कार्त्स्न्येन तथैव बहुधान्यकम्
There was a great battle with heroes, intoxicated like peacocks; he conquered the desert region entirely, and also the land rich in grain.
शैरीषकं महेत्थं च वशे चक्रे महाद्युतिः। आक्रोशं चैव राजर्षि तेन युद्धमभून्महत्
The radiant one subdued Shairishaka and Mahettha; there was a great battle with the royal sage Akrosha.
तान्दशार्णान्स जित्वा च प्रतस्थे पाण्डुनन्दनः। शिबींस्त्रिगर्तानम्बष्ठान्मालवान्पञ्च कर्पटान्
Having defeated the Dasharnas, the son of Pandu advanced against the Shibis, Trigartas, Ambasthas, Malavas, and the five Karpatakas.
तथा मध्यमकेयांश्च वाटधानान्द्विजानथ। पुनश्च परिवृत्याथ पुष्करारण्यवासिनः
He also subdued the Madhyamakeyas, Vatadhanas, and twice-born ones; then, turning back, the dwellers of Pushkara forest.
गणानुत्सवसङ्केतान्व्यजयत्पुरुषर्षभः। सिन्धुकूलाश्रिता ये च ग्रामणीया महाबलाः
The bull among men conquered the festival groups and assemblies, and the mighty chiefs dwelling on the banks of the Sindhu.
शूराऽऽभीरगणाश्चैव ये चाश्रित्य सरस्वतीम्। वर्तयन्ति च ये मत्स्यैर्ये च पर्वतवासिनः
He subdued the brave Abhira clans, those dwelling by the Sarasvati, those living by fishing, and those who reside in the mountains.
कत्स्नं पञ्चनन्दं चैव तथैवामरपर्वतम्। उत्तरज्योतिषं चैव तथा दिव्यकटं पुरम्
He conquered all of Panchananda, and likewise Amaraparvata, the northern Jyotisha, and the city of Divyakaṭa.
द्वारपालं च तरसा वशे चक्रे महाद्युतिः। रामठान्हारहूणांश्च प्रतीच्याश्चैव ये नृपाः
With force, the radiant one subdued the gatekeeper; he also conquered the Ramathas, Harahunas, and the kings of the western lands.
तान्सर्वान्स वशे चक्रे शासनादेव पाण्डवः। तत्रस्थः प्रेषयामास वासुदेवाय भारत
The Pandava subdued them all by command; and stationed there, he sent word to Vasudeva, O Bharata.
स चास्य गतभी राजन्प्रतिजग्राह शासनम्। ततः शाकलमभ्येत्य मद्राणां पुटभेदनम्
And he, O King, having lost his fear, accepted the command; then, arriving at Shakala, he subdued the Madras and the Puṭabhedanas.
मातुलं प्रीतिपूर्वेण शल्यं चक्रे वशे बली। स तेन सत्कृतो राज्ञा सत्कारार्हो विशाम्पते
With affection, he brought his powerful maternal uncle Shalya under his sway; and that king, worthy of honor, was duly honored by him.
रत्नानि भूरीण्यादाय सम्प्रतस्थे युधां पतिः। ततः सागरकुक्षिस्थान्म्लेच्छान्परमदारुणान्
The lord of battles, having received abundant jewels, set forth; then from the lands by the ocean's gulf, he subdued the fierce mlecchas.
पह्लवान्वर्बरांश्चैव किरातान्यवनाञ्शकान्। ततो रत्नान्यपादाय वशे कृत्वा च पार्थिवान्। न्यवर्तत कुरुश्रेष्ठो नकुलश्चित्रमार्गवित्
He brought the Pahlavas, Varbaras, Kiratas, Yavanas, and Shakas under his control, taking their jewels; then Nakula, best of Kurus and knower of many paths, returned.
करमाणां सहस्राणि कोशं तस्य महात्मनः। ऊहर्दश महाराज कृच्छ्रादिव महाधनम्
He brought thousands of tributes, O great king, and immense wealth, as if drawn from hardships, to the treasury of that high-souled one.
इन्द्रप्रस्थगतं वीरमभ्येत्य स युधिष्ठिरम्। ततो माद्रीसुतः श्रीमान्धनं तस्मै न्यवेदयत्
Coming to Indraprastha, he approached Yudhishthira, and the illustrious son of Madri presented that wealth to him.
एवं विजित्य नकुलो दिशं वरुणपालिताम्। प्रतीचीं वासुदेवेन निर्जितां भरतर्षभ
Thus Nakula conquered the region guarded by Varuna, O bull among Bharatas, the western quarter, already subdued by Vasudeva.
रक्षणाद्धर्मराजस्य सत्यस्य परिपालनात्। शत्रूणां क्षपणाच्चैव स्वकर्मनिरताः प्रजाः
Because of the protection of the king of dharma, the upholding of truth, and the destruction of enemies, the people devoted themselves to their own duties.
बलीनां सम्यगादानाद्धर्मतश्चानुशासनात्। निकामवर्षी पर्जन्यः स्फीतो जनपदोऽभवत्
Because of proper collection from the strong and righteous governance, the rain fell abundantly, and the land became prosperous.
सर्वारम्भाः सुप्रवृत्ता गोरक्षा कर्षणं वणिक्। विशेषात्सर्वमेवैतत्सञ्जज्ञे राजकर्मणः
All undertakings flourished—cattle-keeping, ploughing, and trade; all this arose especially due to the king’s actions.
