स तं प्रदक्षिमं कृत्वा मलयं भरतर्षभ। लङ्घयित्वा तु माद्रेयस्ताम्रपणीं नदीं शुभाम्
He circumambulated Mount Malaya, O best of Bharatas, and the son of Madri crossed the beautiful Tamraparni river.
प्रसन्नसलिलां दिव्यां सुशीतां च मनोहराम्। समुद्रतीरमासाद्य न्यविशत्पाण्डुनन्दनः
He reached the seashore, where the waters were clear, divine, pleasantly cool, and enchanting, and there the son of Pandu rested.
सहदेवस्ततो राजा मन्त्रिभिः सह भारत। सम्प्रधार्य महाबाहुः सचिवैर्बुद्धिमत्तरैः
Then King Sahadeva, O descendant of Bharata, after consulting with his wise ministers, considered the matter with those intelligent counselors.
स विचार्य तदा राजन्सहदेवस्त्वरान्वितः। चिन्तयामास राजेन्द्र भ्रातुः पुत्रं घटोत्कचम्
Having deliberated, Sahadeva, swift in action, began to ponder upon Ghatotkacha, the son of his brother.
ततश्चिन्तितमात्रे तु राक्षसः प्रत्यदृश्यत। अतिदीर्घो महाबाहु सर्वाभरणभूषितः
And as soon as he was thought of, the Rakshasa appeared—immensely tall, with mighty arms, adorned with every ornament.
नीलजीमूतसङ्काशस्तप्तकाञ्चनकुण्डलः। विचित्रहारकेयूरः किङ्किणीमणिभूषितः
He resembled a dark raincloud, wore blazing golden earrings, a wondrous necklace and armlets, and was adorned with tinkling jeweled girdles.
हेममाली महादंष्ट्रः किरीटी कुक्षिबन्धनः। ताम्रकेशो हरिश्मश्रुर्भीमाङ्गः कटकाङ्गदः
He wore a garland of gold, had great fangs, a crown, a belt at his waist, coppery hair, tawny beard, a formidable frame, and armlets and bracelets.
रक्तचन्दनदिग्धाङ्गः सूक्ष्माम्बरधरो बली। बलेन स ययौ तत्र चालयन्निव मेदिनीम्
His body was smeared with red sandalwood, he wore fine garments, and was powerful; as he advanced, it seemed as if the earth itself trembled beneath his strength.
ततो दृष्ट्वा जना राजन्नायान्तं पर्वतोपमम्। भयाद्धि दुद्रुवुः सर्वे सिंहात्क्षुद्रमृगा यथा
Seeing him approaching, O King, like a mountain, all the people fled in fear, just as small creatures flee from a lion.
आससाद च माद्रेयं पुलस्त्यं रावणो यथा। अभिवाद्य ततो राजन्सहदेवं घटोत्कचः
He approached Sahadeva, son of Madri, as Ravana once approached Pulastya; then, after bowing, Ghatotkacha greeted Sahadeva.
प्रह्वः कृताञ्जलिस्तस्थौ किं कार्यमिति चाब्रवीत्। तं परिष्वज्य बाहुभ्यां मूर्ध्न्युपाघ्राय पाण्डवः
With hands joined in reverence, he stood humbly and asked, 'What is your command?' The Pandava embraced him with both arms and smelled his head.
तं मेरुशिखराकारमागतं पाण्डुनन्दनः। पूजयित्वा सहामात्यः प्रीतो वाक्यमुवाच ह
Honoring him, who resembled the peak of Mount Meru, the son of Pandu, pleased, addressed him with his ministers.
गच्छ लङ्कां पुरीं वत्स करार्थं मम शासनात्। ।। तत्र दृष्ट्वा महात्मानं राक्षसेन्द्रं बिभीषणम्
'Go, my child, to the city of Lanka at my command; there, upon seeing the great-souled king of the Rakshasas, Vibhishana—'
रत्नानि राजसूयार्थं विविधानि बहूनि च। उपादाय च सर्वाणि प्रत्यागच्छ महाबल
'—bring back all kinds of precious jewels for the Rajasuya sacrifice, and return with them, O mighty one.'
पाण्डवेनैवमुक्तस्तु मुदा युक्तो घटोत्कचः। तथेत्युक्त्वा महाराज प्रतस्ये दक्षिणां दिशम्
Thus addressed by the Pandava, Ghatotkacha, filled with joy, replied, 'So be it, O King,' and set out toward the southern direction.
प्रययौ दक्षिणं कृत्वा सहदेवं घटोत्कचः। लङ्कामभिमुको राजन्समुद्रं स व्यलोकयत्
Taking leave of Sahadeva, Ghatotkacha headed south, O King, and gazed upon the ocean as he made his way toward Lanka.
कूर्मग्राहझषाकीर्णं मीननक्रैस्तथाऽऽकुलम्। शुक्तिव्रातसमाकीर्णं शङ्कानां निचयाकुलम्
He saw the sea teeming with turtles, crocodiles, and great fish, crowded with shoals of oysters and heaps of conch shells.
स दृष्ट्वा रामसेतुं च चिन्तयन्रामविक्रमम्।। गत्वा पारं समुद्रस्य दक्षिणं स घटोत्कचः
He beheld the bridge of Rama and reflected on Rama's valor; then Ghatotkacha crossed to the southern shore of the ocean.
ददर्श लङ्कां राजेन्द्र नाकपृष्ठोपमां शुभाम्। प्राकारेणावृतां रम्यां शुभद्वारैश्च शोभिताम्
There he saw Lanka, O king of kings, splendid as the summit of heaven, encircled by ramparts and adorned with beautiful gates.
प्रासादैर्बहुसाहस्रैः श्वेतरक्तैश्च सङ्कुलाम्। दिव्यदुन्दुभिनिर्ह्रादामुद्यानवनशोभिताम्
It was crowded with thousands of white and red palaces, resounded with celestial drums, and was beautified with gardens and groves.
सर्वकालफलैर्वृक्षैः पुष्पितैरुपशोभिताम्। पुष्पगन्धैश्च सङ्कीर्णां रमणीयमहारथाम्
Adorned with trees bearing fruit in all seasons and blossoming with flowers, filled with the fragrance of blossoms, and splendid with magnificent chariots.
नानारत्नैश्च सम्पूर्णामिन्द्रस्येवामरावतीम्। विवेश स पुरीं लङ्कां राक्षसैश्च निषेविताम्
Abounding in various gems, like Amaravati of Indra, he entered that city of Lanka, inhabited by Rakshasas.
ददर्श स पुरीं लङ्कां राक्षसैश्च निषेविताम्।। नानावेषधरान्दक्षान्नारीश्च प्रियदर्शनाः
He beheld that city of Lanka, attended by Rakshasas, with skilled men in diverse attire and women of pleasing appearance.
दिव्यमाल्याम्बरधरा दिव्यभूषणभूषिताः। मदरक्तान्तनयनाः पीनश्रोणिपयोधराः
Clad in divine garlands and garments, adorned with celestial ornaments, their eyes reddened with intoxication, with full hips and swelling breasts.
भैमसेनिं ततो दृष्ट्वा हृष्टास्ते विस्मयं गताः। आससाद गृहं राज्ञ इन्द्रस्य सदनोपमम्
Then, seeing Bhimasena's son, they became delighted and amazed; he approached the king's mansion, resembling Indra's own abode.
bकुरूणामृष्टबो राजा पाण्डुर्नाम महाबलः।। aकनीयांस्तस्य दायादः सहदेव इति श्रुतः। bतेनाहं प्रेषितो दूतः करार्थं कौरवस्य च
The king of the Kurus, mighty Pandu by name, whose youngest heir is known as Sahadeva—by him I have been sent as a messenger for the sake of the Kaurava's hand.
द्रष्टुमिच्छामि राजेनद्रं त्वं क्षिप्रं मां निवेदय
I wish to see the king; announce me to him quickly.
तथेत्युक्त्वा विवेशाथ भवनं स निवेदकः। प्राञ्जलिः स्रवमाचष्ट स्रवां दूतगिरं तदा
Saying 'So be it,' the announcer entered the palace, and with joined palms, conveyed the messenger's words.
द्वारपालवचः श्रुत्वा राक्षसेन्द्रो विभीषणः। उवाच वाक्यं धर्मात्मा समीपं मे प्रवेश्यताम्
Hearing the doorkeeper's words, Vibhishana, the king of the Rakshasas, righteous in soul, said, 'Let him be brought near me.'
एवमुक्तस्तु राज्ञा स धर्मज्ञेन महात्मना। अथनिष्कम्य सम्भ्रान्तो द्वार्स्थोहैडिम्बमब्रवीत्
Thus addressed by the great and righteous king, the doorkeeper, departing in haste, spoke to Hidimba.
