क्वचित्सुपुष्पितैर्वृक्षैः क्वचित्सौगन्धिकोत्पलैः। कह्लारकुमुदोत्फुल्लैः कमलैरुपशोभिताम्
In some places, it was adorned with fully blossomed trees, in others with fragrant blue lotuses, kahlāra, kumuda, and blooming lotuses.
कावेरीं तादृशीं दृष्ट्वा प्रीतिमान्पाण्डवस्तदा। अस्मद्राष्ट्रे यथा गङ्गा कावेरी च तथा शुभा
Seeing such a Kāverī, the Pāṇḍava was delighted; just as the Gaṅgā is in our land, so too is the auspicious Kāverī.
सहदेवस्तु तां तीर्त्वा नदीमनुचरैः सह। दक्षिणं तीरभासाद्य गमनायोपचक्रमे
But Sahadeva, having crossed that river with his followers, set out for the southern shore.
आगतं पाण्डवं तत्र श्रुत्वा विषयवासिनः। दर्शनार्थं ययुस्ते तु कौतूहलसमन्विताः
Hearing that the Pāṇḍava had arrived, the inhabitants of the region, filled with curiosity, came forth to see him.
द्रमिडाः पुरुषा राजन्स्रियचश्च प्रियदर्शनाः। गत्वा पाण्डुसुतं तत्र ददृशुस्ते मुदाऽन्विताः
O King, the Dravidian men, splendid and pleasing to behold, went to the son of Pandu and saw him there, filled with joy.
सुकुमारं विशालाक्षं व्रजन्तं त्रिदशोपमम्। दर्शनीयतमं लोके नेत्रैरनिमिषैरिव
They saw him, delicate, with wide eyes, walking like a celestial, the most attractive in the world, as if their eyes could not blink.
आश्चर्यभूतं ददृशुर्द्रमिडास्ते समागताः। महासेनोपमं दृष्ट्वा पूजां चक्रुश्च तस्य वै
Those assembled Dravidians beheld him as a marvel, and seeing him like a great commander, they offered him worship.
रत्नैश्च विविधैरिष्टैर्भोगैरन्यैश्च संमतैः। गतिमङ्गलयुक्तार्भिः स्तुवन्तो नकुलानुजम्
With various desired jewels and other esteemed enjoyments, accompanied by auspicious offerings, they praised Nakula's younger brother.
सहदेवस्तु तान्दृष्ट्वा द्रमिलानागतान्मुदा। विसृज्य तान्महाबाहुः प्रस्थितो दक्षिणां दिशम्
But Sahadeva, seeing those Dravidians who had come, rejoiced, and the mighty-armed one, after greeting them, set out toward the southern direction.
दूतेन तरसा चोलं विजित्य द्रमिडेश्वरम्। ततो रत्नान्युपादाय पाण्डस्य विषयं ययौ
With a swift envoy, he conquered Chola and the Dravidian king; then, taking their jewels, he went to the territory of Pandu.
दर्शने सहदेवस्य न च तृप्ता नराः परे। गच्छन्तमनुगच्छन्तः प्राप्ताः कौतूहलान्विताः
Even after seeing Sahadeva, other men were not satisfied; following him as he departed, they arrived, filled with curiosity.
ततो माद्रीसुतों राजन्मृगसङ्घान्विलोकयन्। गजान्वनचरानन्यान्व्याघ्रान्कुष्णमृगान्बहून्
Then, O King, the son of Madri, observing herds of deer, elephants, other forest-dwellers, tigers, and many spotted deer,
शुकान्मयूरान्दृष्ट्वा तु गृध्रानारण्यकुक्कुटान्। ततो देशं समासाद्य श्वशुरस्य महीपतेः
He saw parrots, peacocks, vultures, and wild jungle fowl; then, reaching the land of his father-in-law, the king,
प्रेषयामास माद्रेयो दूतान्पाण्ड्याय वै तदा। प्रतिजग्राह तस्याज्ञां सम्प्रीत्या मलयध्वजः
At that time, the son of Madri sent envoys to Pandya; Malayadhvaja gladly accepted his command.
भार्या रूपवती जिष्णोः पाण्ड्यस्य तनया शुभा। चित्राङ्गदेति विख्याता द्रमिडी योषितां वरा
The beautiful wife of Jishnu, the illustrious daughter of Pandya, renowned as Citrangada, was the foremost among Dravidian women.
आगतं सहदेवं तु सा श्रुत्वाऽन्तः पुरे पितुः। प्रेषयामास सम्प्रीत्या पूजारत्नं च वै बहु
Hearing that Sahadeva had arrived within her father's city, she sent, with joy, abundant offerings and jewels.
पाण्ड्योऽपि बहुरत्नानि दूतैः सह मुमोच ह। मणिमुक्ताप्रवालानि सहदेवाय कीर्तिमान्
Pandya, famed, also sent many jewels with his envoys—gems, pearls, and coral—to Sahadeva.
तां दृष्ट्वाऽप्रतिमां पूजां पाण्डवोऽपि मुदा नृप। भ्रातुः पुत्रे बहून्रत्नान्दत्वा वै बभ्रूवाहने
Seeing that incomparable worship, the Pandava, delighted, gave many jewels to the son of his brother, Babhruvahana.
पाण्ड्यं द्रमिडराजानं श्वशुरं मलयध्वजम्। स दूतैस्तं वशे कृत्वा मणलूरेश्वरं तदा
He then brought Pandya, the Dravidian king, his father-in-law Malayadhvaja, and the king of Manalur under his sway through envoys.
ततो रत्नान्युपादाय द्रमिडैरावृतो ययौ। अगस्त्यस्यालयं दिव्यं देवलोकसमं गिरिम्
Then, taking the jewels, surrounded by Dravidians, he went to the divine abode of Agastya, a mountain equal to the realm of the gods.
स तं प्रदक्षिमं कृत्वा मलयं भरतर्षभ। लङ्घयित्वा तु माद्रेयस्ताम्रपणीं नदीं शुभाम्
He circumambulated Mount Malaya, O best of Bharatas, and the son of Madri crossed the beautiful Tamraparni river.
प्रसन्नसलिलां दिव्यां सुशीतां च मनोहराम्। समुद्रतीरमासाद्य न्यविशत्पाण्डुनन्दनः
He reached the seashore, where the waters were clear, divine, pleasantly cool, and enchanting, and there the son of Pandu rested.
सहदेवस्ततो राजा मन्त्रिभिः सह भारत। सम्प्रधार्य महाबाहुः सचिवैर्बुद्धिमत्तरैः
Then King Sahadeva, O descendant of Bharata, after consulting with his wise ministers, considered the matter with those intelligent counselors.
स विचार्य तदा राजन्सहदेवस्त्वरान्वितः। चिन्तयामास राजेन्द्र भ्रातुः पुत्रं घटोत्कचम्
Having deliberated, Sahadeva, swift in action, began to ponder upon Ghatotkacha, the son of his brother.
ततश्चिन्तितमात्रे तु राक्षसः प्रत्यदृश्यत। अतिदीर्घो महाबाहु सर्वाभरणभूषितः
And as soon as he was thought of, the Rakshasa appeared—immensely tall, with mighty arms, adorned with every ornament.
नीलजीमूतसङ्काशस्तप्तकाञ्चनकुण्डलः। विचित्रहारकेयूरः किङ्किणीमणिभूषितः
He resembled a dark raincloud, wore blazing golden earrings, a wondrous necklace and armlets, and was adorned with tinkling jeweled girdles.
हेममाली महादंष्ट्रः किरीटी कुक्षिबन्धनः। ताम्रकेशो हरिश्मश्रुर्भीमाङ्गः कटकाङ्गदः
He wore a garland of gold, had great fangs, a crown, a belt at his waist, coppery hair, tawny beard, a formidable frame, and armlets and bracelets.
रक्तचन्दनदिग्धाङ्गः सूक्ष्माम्बरधरो बली। बलेन स ययौ तत्र चालयन्निव मेदिनीम्
His body was smeared with red sandalwood, he wore fine garments, and was powerful; as he advanced, it seemed as if the earth itself trembled beneath his strength.
ततो दृष्ट्वा जना राजन्नायान्तं पर्वतोपमम्। भयाद्धि दुद्रुवुः सर्वे सिंहात्क्षुद्रमृगा यथा
Seeing him approaching, O King, like a mountain, all the people fled in fear, just as small creatures flee from a lion.
आससाद च माद्रेयं पुलस्त्यं रावणो यथा। अभिवाद्य ततो राजन्सहदेवं घटोत्कचः
He approached Sahadeva, son of Madri, as Ravana once approached Pulastya; then, after bowing, Ghatotkacha greeted Sahadeva.
