पाण्ड्यांश्च द्रविडांश्चैव सहितांश्चोड्रकेरलैः। अन्ध्रांस्तावनांश्चैव कलिङ्गानुष्ट्रकर्णिकान्
He subdued the Pandyas and the Dravidas, together with the Odra-Keralas, the Andhras, the Tavanans, the Kalingas, and the Ushtrakarnikans.
आटवीं च पुरीं रम्यां यवनानां पुरं तथा। दूतैरेव वशे चक्रे करं चैनानदापयत्
He brought the beautiful city Atavi and the city of the Yavanas under his control through messengers, and made them pay tribute.
तात्रपर्णी ततो गत्वा कन्यातीर्थमतीत्य च। दक्षिणां च दिशं सर्वा विजित्य कुरुनन्दनः
Then, crossing the river Tatraparni and reaching the holy place Kanya, having conquered all the southern region, the son of Kuru proceeded.
उत्तरं तीरमासाद्य सागरस्योर्मिमालिनः। चिन्तयामास कौन्तेयो भ्रातुः पुत्रं घटोत्कचम्
Arriving at the northern shore of the ocean, adorned with waves, Kaunteya began to contemplate Ghatotkacha, the son of his brother.
ततश्चिन्तितमात्रस्तु राक्षसः प्रत्यदृश्यत। तं मेरुशिखराकारमागतं पाण्डुनन्दनः
Then, as soon as he was thought of, the rakshasa appeared; Pandu's son saw him arrive, resembling the peak of Meru.
भृगुकच्छात्ततो धीमान्साम्नैवामित्रकर्शनः। आगम्यतामिति प्राह धर्मराजस्य शसनाः
Then, from Bhṛgukaccha, the wise destroyer of foes, following the command of Dharmaraja, said, 'Let him come.'
स राक्षसपरीवारस्तं प्रणम्याशु संस्थितः। घटोत्कचं महात्मानं राक्षसं घोरदर्शनम्
He, surrounded by rākṣasas, quickly approached and bowed to the great-souled Ghaṭotkaca, the rākṣasa of terrifying appearance.
तत्रस्थः प्रेषयामास पौलस्त्याय महात्मने'। बिभीषणाय धर्मात्मा प्रीतिपूर्वमरिन्दमः
Standing there, the righteous subduer of enemies, with affection, sent a message to the illustrious Paulastya, the great-souled Bibhīṣaṇa.
स चास्य प्रतिजग्राह शासनं प्रीतिपूर्वकम्। तच्च कृष्णकृतं धीमानभ्यमन्यत स प्रभुः
He, the wise lord, gladly accepted that command, and regarded it as having been made by Kṛṣṇa.
ततः सम्प्रेषयामास रत्नानि विविधानि च। चन्दनागुरुकाष्ठानि दिव्यान्याभरणानि च
Then he sent various jewels, sandalwood, aloe wood, and divine ornaments.
इच्छाम्यागमनं श्रोतुं हैडिम्बस्य द्विजोत्तम। लङ्कायां च गतिं ब्रह्मन्पौलस्त्यस्य च दर्शनम्
O best of brāhmaṇas, I wish to hear of the coming of Haiḍimba, his journey to Laṅkā, and his meeting with Paulastya.
कावेरीदर्शनं चैव आनुपूर्व्या वदस्व मे
Tell me, in order, also of the sight of the Kāverī.
कालनद्वीपगांश्चैव तरसाऽजित्य चाहवे। दक्षिणां च दिशं जित्वा चोलस्य विषयं ययौ
Having swiftly conquered those dwelling on Kalanadvīpa in battle, and having subdued the southern direction, he entered the territory of the Chola.
ददर्श पुण्यतोयां वै कावेरीं सरितां वराम्। नाजापक्षिगणैर्जुष्टां तापसैरुपशोभिताम्
He beheld the holy river Kāverī, foremost of streams, not frequented by waterfowl, but adorned by ascetics.
साललोध्रार्जुनैल्वैर्जम्बूशाल्मलकिंशुकैः। कदम्बैः सप्तपर्णैश्च कश्मर्यामलकैर्वृताम्
It was surrounded by sāla, lodhra, arjuna, ilva, jambū, śālmalī, kiṃśuka, kadamba, saptaparṇa, kaśmarya, and āmalaka trees.
न्यग्रोधैश्च महाशाखैः प्लक्षैरौदुम्बरैरपि। शमीपलाशवृक्षैश्च अश्वत्थैः खदिरैर्वृताम्
It was also encircled by great-branching banyans, plakṣa, udumbara, śamī, palāśa, aśvattha, and khadira trees.
बदरीभिश्च सञ्छन्नामश्वकर्णैश्च शोभिताम्। चूतैः पुण्ड्रकपत्रैश्च कदलीवनसंवृताम्
It was covered with badarī trees and adorned with aśvakarṇa, mango, puṇḍra-patra, and groves of banana trees.
चक्रवाकगणैः कीर्णं प्लवैश्च जलवायसैः। समुद्रकाकैः क्रौञ्चैश्च नादितां जलकुक्कुटैः
It was filled with flocks of cakravāka birds, plava waterfowl, sea crows, krauñca cranes, and resounded with the cries of waterfowl.
एवं खगैश्च बहुभिः सङ्घुष्टां जलवासिभिः। आश्रमैर्बहुभिः सक्तां चैत्यवृक्षैश्च शोभिताम्
Thus, it was noisy with many birds dwelling in the water, adorned with many hermitages and sacred trees.
शोभितां ब्राह्मणैः शुभ्रैर्वेदवेदाङ्गपारगैः। क्वचित्तीररुहैर्वृक्षैर्मालाभिरिव शोभिताम्
It was graced by pure brāhmaṇas, learned in the Vedas and Vedāṅgas, and in places, beautified by riverside trees like garlands.
क्वचित्सुपुष्पितैर्वृक्षैः क्वचित्सौगन्धिकोत्पलैः। कह्लारकुमुदोत्फुल्लैः कमलैरुपशोभिताम्
In some places, it was adorned with fully blossomed trees, in others with fragrant blue lotuses, kahlāra, kumuda, and blooming lotuses.
कावेरीं तादृशीं दृष्ट्वा प्रीतिमान्पाण्डवस्तदा। अस्मद्राष्ट्रे यथा गङ्गा कावेरी च तथा शुभा
Seeing such a Kāverī, the Pāṇḍava was delighted; just as the Gaṅgā is in our land, so too is the auspicious Kāverī.
सहदेवस्तु तां तीर्त्वा नदीमनुचरैः सह। दक्षिणं तीरभासाद्य गमनायोपचक्रमे
But Sahadeva, having crossed that river with his followers, set out for the southern shore.
आगतं पाण्डवं तत्र श्रुत्वा विषयवासिनः। दर्शनार्थं ययुस्ते तु कौतूहलसमन्विताः
Hearing that the Pāṇḍava had arrived, the inhabitants of the region, filled with curiosity, came forth to see him.
द्रमिडाः पुरुषा राजन्स्रियचश्च प्रियदर्शनाः। गत्वा पाण्डुसुतं तत्र ददृशुस्ते मुदाऽन्विताः
O King, the Dravidian men, splendid and pleasing to behold, went to the son of Pandu and saw him there, filled with joy.
सुकुमारं विशालाक्षं व्रजन्तं त्रिदशोपमम्। दर्शनीयतमं लोके नेत्रैरनिमिषैरिव
They saw him, delicate, with wide eyes, walking like a celestial, the most attractive in the world, as if their eyes could not blink.
आश्चर्यभूतं ददृशुर्द्रमिडास्ते समागताः। महासेनोपमं दृष्ट्वा पूजां चक्रुश्च तस्य वै
Those assembled Dravidians beheld him as a marvel, and seeing him like a great commander, they offered him worship.
रत्नैश्च विविधैरिष्टैर्भोगैरन्यैश्च संमतैः। गतिमङ्गलयुक्तार्भिः स्तुवन्तो नकुलानुजम्
With various desired jewels and other esteemed enjoyments, accompanied by auspicious offerings, they praised Nakula's younger brother.
सहदेवस्तु तान्दृष्ट्वा द्रमिलानागतान्मुदा। विसृज्य तान्महाबाहुः प्रस्थितो दक्षिणां दिशम्
But Sahadeva, seeing those Dravidians who had come, rejoiced, and the mighty-armed one, after greeting them, set out toward the southern direction.
दूतेन तरसा चोलं विजित्य द्रमिडेश्वरम्। ततो रत्नान्युपादाय पाण्डस्य विषयं ययौ
With a swift envoy, he conquered Chola and the Dravidian king; then, taking their jewels, he went to the territory of Pandu.
