धर्मराजाय तत्पार्थो धनं सर्वं सवाहनम्। न्यवेदयदनुज्ञातस्तेन राज्ञा गृहान्ययौ
Then, having been permitted by the king, Partha presented all the wealth, along with the vehicles, to Dharmaraja, and went to his own quarters.
एतस्मिन्नेव काले तु भीमसेनोऽपि वीर्यवान्। धर्मराजमनुज्ञाप्य ययौ प्राचीं दिशं प्रति।। 5
At that very time, the mighty Bhimasena, having taken leave of Dharmaraja, set out toward the eastern direction.
महता बलचक्रेण परराष्ट्रावमर्दिना। हस्त्यश्वरथपूर्णेन दंशितेन प्रतापवान्
With a great army, subduing foreign realms, filled with elephants, horses, and chariots, splendid and formidable, he advanced.
वृतो भरतशार्दूलो द्विषच्छोकविवर्धनः। स गत्वा नरशार्दूलः पञ्चालानां पुरं महत्
Surrounded by warriors, the tiger among the Bharatas, an increaser of his enemies' sorrow, that tiger among men went to the great city of the Panchalas.
पञ्चालान्विविधोपायैः सान्त्वयामास पाण्डवः। `किञ्चित्करं समादाय विदेहानां पुरं ययौ'।। ततः स गण्डकाञ्शूरो विदेहान्भरतर्षभः
The Pandava, by various means, conciliated the Panchalas, and, having received a tribute, went to the city of the Videhas; then that hero of the Gandaka region, the bull among the Bharatas, proceeded to the Videhas.
विजित्याल्पेन कालेन दशार्णानजयत्प्रभुः। तत्र दाशार्णको राजा सुधर्मा रोमहर्षणम्। कृतवान्भीमसेनेम महद्युद्धं निरायुधम्
Having conquered them in a short time, the lord subdued the Dasharnas; there, the king of the Dasharnas, Sudharma, engaged in a great, weaponless contest with Bhimasena that thrilled the heart.
भीमसेनस्तु तद्दृष्ट्वा तस्य कर्म महात्मनः। अधिसेनापतिं चक्रे सुधर्माणं महाबलम्
Seeing the deed of that great-souled one, Bhimasena appointed Sudharma, of great strength, as his chief general.
ततः प्राचीं दिशं भीमो ययौ भीमपराक्रमः। सैन्येन महता राजन्कम्पयन्निव मेदिनीम्
Then Bhima, of terrible prowess, went eastward, O king, with a great army, as if shaking the earth.
सोऽश्वमेधेश्वरं राजन्रोचमानं सहानुगम्। जिगाय समरे वीरो बलेन बलिनां वरः
There, O king, the hero, best among the strong, defeated the illustrious ruler of Ashvamedha, along with his followers, in battle by his might.
स तं निर्जित्य कौन्तेयो नातितीव्रेण कर्मणा। पूर्वदेशं महावीर्यं विजिग्ये कुरनन्दनः
Having subdued him with not too severe an effort, the mighty son of Kunti conquered the eastern region, O joy of the Kurus.
ततो दक्षिणमागम्य पुलिन्दनगरं महत्। सुकुमारं वशे चक्रे सुमित्रं च नराधिपम्
Then, coming south to the great city of the Pulindas, he brought Sukumara and King Sumitra under his control.
ततस्तु धर्मराजस्य शासनाद्भरतर्षभः। शिशुपालं महावीर्यमभ्यगाज्जनमेजय
Then, at the command of Dharmaraja, the bull among the Bharatas approached the mighty Shishupala, O Janamejaya.
चेदिराजोऽपि तच्छ्रुत्वा पाण्डवस्य चिकीर्षितम्। उपनिष्कम्य नगरात्प्रत्यगृह्णात्परन्तप
Hearing of the Pandava's intention, the king of Chedi, destroyer of foes, came out from his city and received him.
तौ समेत्य महाराज कुरुचेदिवृषौ तदा। उभयोरात्मकुलयोः कौशलं पर्यपृच्छताम्
Then, O great king, those two bulls of the Kurus and Chedis met, and inquired after the welfare of each other's families.
ततो निवेद्य तद्राष्ट्रं चेदिराजो विशाम्पते। उवाच भीमं प्रहसन्किमिदं कुरुषेऽनघ
Then, having reported his kingdom, the king of Chedi, O lord of men, laughed and said to Bhima, 'What is this that you are doing, O sinless one?'
तस्य भीमस्तदाचख्यौ धर्मराजचिकीर्षितम्। स च तं प्रतिगृह्यैव तथा चक्रे नराधिपः
Bhima explained to him the purpose of Dharmaraja, and the king accepted it and acted accordingly.
ततो भीमस्तत्र राजन्निषित्वा त्रिदशाः क्षपाः। सत्कृतः शिशुपालेन ययौ सबलवाहनः
Then, O king, Bhima, having spent three nights there, honored by Shishupala, departed with his army and vehicles.
ततः कुमारविषये श्रेणिमन्तमथाजयत्। कोसलाधिपतिं चैव बृहद्बलमरिन्दमः
Then, in the territory of the princes, he conquered Shrenimant and, subduing the king of Kosala, Brihadbala, the subduer of foes.
अयोध्यायां तु धर्मज्ञं दीर्घयज्ञं महाबलम्। अजयत्णण्डवश्रेष्ठो नातितीव्रेण कर्मणा
In Ayodhya, the righteous and mighty Dīrghayajña, foremost among the Nandavas, was defeated by not too severe an effort.
ततो गोपालकक्षं च सोत्तरानपि कोसलान्। मल्लानामधिपं चैव पार्थिवं चाजयत्प्रभुः
Then the lord conquered Gopālakakṣa, the northern Kosalas, the chief of the wrestlers, and the king as well.
ततो हिमवतः पार्श्वं समभ्येत्य जलोद्भवम्। सर्वमल्पेन कालेन देशं चक्रे वशं बली
After that, approaching the region by the side of the Himalaya, born of water, the powerful one brought the land under his control in a short time.
एवं बहुविधान्देशान्विजिग्ये भरतर्षभः। भल्लाटमभितो जिग्ये शुक्तिमन्तं च पर्वतम्
In this way, the bull among the Bharatas conquered many kinds of lands; he subdued Bhallāta and the mountain called Śuktimān.
पाण्डवः सुमहावीर्यो बलेन बलिनां वरः। स काशिराजं समरे सुबाहुमनिवर्तिनम्
The exceedingly mighty Pāṇḍava, best among the strong, with his strength, overcame the king of Kāśi in battle, who was difficult to turn back.
वशे चक्रे महाबाहुर्भीमो भीमपराक्रमः। ततः सुपार्श्वमभितस्तथा राजपतिं क्रथम्
The great-armed Bhīma, of terrible prowess, brought him under his control, and then similarly subdued Supārśva and the king Kratha.
युध्यमानं बालत्सङ्ख्ये विजिग्ये पाण्डवर्षभः। ततो मत्स्यान्महातेजा मलदांश्च महाबलान्
The bull among the Pāṇḍavas defeated Bālatsaṅkhya in battle, and then the radiant one conquered the Matsyas and the mighty Maladas.
अनघानभयांश्चैव पशुभूमिं च सर्वशः। निवृत्य च महाबाहुर्मदधारं महीधरम्
He also overcame the blameless and fearless ones, and the entire land of cattle; then the great-armed one subdued Madadhāra, the mountain.
सोमधेयांश्च निर्जित्य प्रत्ययावुत्तरामुखः। वत्सभूमिं च कौन्तेयो विजिग्ये बलवान्बलात्
Having conquered the Somadheyas, he, facing north with confidence, forcefully subdued the land of the Vatsas, O son of Kunti.
भर्गाणामधिपं चैव निषादाधिपतिं तथा। विजिग्ये भूमिपालांश्च ममिमत्प्रमुखान्बहून्
He conquered the lord of the Bhargas, and also the chief of the Niṣādas; he subdued many kings, with Mamimat at their head.
ततो दक्षिणमल्लांश्च भोगवन्तं च पर्वतम्। तरसैवाजयद्भीमो नातितीव्रेण कर्मणा
Then Bhīma swiftly defeated the southern Mallās and the wealthy mountain, not by too severe an effort.
शर्मकान्वर्मकांश्चैव व्यजयत्सान्त्वपूर्वकम्। वैदेहकं च राजानं जनकं जगतीपतिम्
He overcame the Śarmakas and Varmakas with gentle persuasion, and also the king of Videha, Janaka, lord of the earth.
