अजयच्चापि बीभत्सुर्देशं गुह्यकरक्षितम्। तत्र लेभे च राजेन्द्र सौवर्णान्मृगपक्षिणः
Bībhatsu also conquered the land guarded by the Guhyakas; there, O king, he obtained golden animals and birds.
अगृह्णाद्यज्ञभूत्यर्थं रमणीयान्मनोहरान्। अन्यांश्च लब्ध्वा रत्नानि पाण्डवोऽथ महाबलः
He took charming and delightful treasures for the purpose of sacrifice; and having acquired other gems, the mighty Pāṇḍava continued.
गन्धर्वरक्षितं देशमजयत्सगणं तदा। तत्र रत्नानि दिव्यानि लब्ध्वा राजन्नथार्जुनः
He conquered the land protected by Gandharvas and their hosts; there, O king, Arjuna obtained divine gems.
वर्षं हिरण्वतं नाम विवेशाथ महीपते। स तु देशेषु रम्येषु गन्तुं तत्रोपचक्रमे
He entered the land called Hiraṇvata, O ruler of the earth; and in those beautiful regions, he began to journey further.
मध्ये प्रासादवृन्देषु नक्षत्राणां शशी यथा। महापथेषु राजैन्द्र सर्वतो यान्तमर्जुनम्
In the midst of clusters of palaces, like the moon among stars, Arjuna was seen traveling everywhere along the great highways, O king of kings.
प्रासादवरशृङ्गस्थाः परया वीर्यशोभया। ददृशुस्तं स्रियः सर्वाः पार्थमात्मयशस्करम्
From the lofty peaks of splendid palaces, all the ladies, radiant in strength and glory, beheld Pārtha, the bringer of his own fame.
तं कलापधरं शूरं सरथं सधनुः करम्। सवर्मं सकिरीटं वै संनद्धं सपरिच्छदम्
They saw him, the heroic bearer of the bow, with his chariot, armor, crown, and attendants, fully equipped and adorned.
सुकुमारं महासत्वं तेजोराशिमनुत्तमम्। शक्रोपमममित्रघ्नं परवारणवारणम्
Delicate yet of great spirit, a peerless radiance, destroyer of foes, like Indra, the subduer of hostile elephants.
पश्यन्तः स्त्रीगणास्तत्र शक्तिपाणिं स्म मेनिरे। अयं स पुरुषव्याघ्रो रणेऽद्भुतपराक्रमः
The groups of women there, seeing him with his weapon in hand, thought: 'This is the tiger among men, wondrously valiant in battle.'
अस्य बाहुबलं प्राप्य न भवन्त्यसुहृद्गणाः। इति वाचो ब्रुवन्त्यस्ताः स्त्रियः प्रेम्णा धनञ्जयम्
They said, 'Those who gain the strength of his arms cannot remain enemies,' thus speaking words of affection for Dhanañjaya.
तुष्टुवुः पुष्पवृष्टिं च ससृजुस्तस्य मूर्धनि। दृष्ट्वा ते तु मुदा युक्ताः कौतूहलसमन्वितः
They praised him and showered flowers upon his head; seeing him, they were filled with joy and curiosity.
रत्नैर्विभूषणैश्चैव अभ्यवर्षंश्च पाण्डवम्। अथ जित्वा समस्तांस्तान्करे च विनिवेश्य च
They rained gems and ornaments upon the Pāṇḍava; and having conquered all those regions and brought them under tribute.
मणिहेमप्रबालानि शस्त्राण्याभरणानि च। एतानि लब्ध्वा पार्थोऽथ शृङ्गवन्तं गिरिं ययौ
Having obtained weapons and ornaments adorned with jewels and gold, Arjuna then proceeded to the mountain Śṛṅgavanta.
शृङ्गवन्तं च कौरव्यः समतिक्रम्य फल्गुनः। उत्तरं हरिवर्षं तु स समासाद्य पाण्डवः
Having crossed the mountain Śṛṅgavanta, Phālguna, the son of Kunti, reached the northern region called Harivarṣa.
विद्याधरगणांश्चैव यक्षेन्द्रांश्च विनिर्जयन्। तत्र लेभे महात्मा वै वासो दिव्यमनुत्तमम्
There, conquering hosts of Vidyādharas and lords of Yakṣas, the great-souled one obtained a divine and unsurpassed garment.
किन्नरद्रुमपत्रांश्च तत्र कृष्णाजिनान्बहून्। याज्ञीयांस्तांस्तदा दिव्यांस्तत्र लेभे धनञ्जय
There, Dhanañjaya acquired many black antelope skins, sacred and divine, as well as leaves from Kinnara trees.
उत्तरं हरिवर्षं तु स समासाद्य पाण्डवः। इयेष जेतुं तं देशं पाकशासनन्दनः
Having reached the northern Harivarṣa, the son of Pāṇḍu, the son of Pākaśāsana, desired to conquer that region.
तत एनं महावीर्यं महाकाया महाबलाः। द्वारपालाः समासाद्य हृष्टा वचनमब्रुवन्
Then, mighty gatekeepers, great in strength and form, approached him and, delighted, spoke these words.
पार्थ नेदं त्वया शक्यं पुरं जेतुं कथञ्जन। उपावर्तस्व कल्याण पर्याप्तमिदमच्युत
"Pārtha, this city cannot be conquered by you in any way. Turn back, O fortunate one; this is enough, O sinless one."
इदं पुरं यः प्रविशेद्घ्रुवं न स भवेन्नरः। प्रीयामहे त्वया वीर पर्याप्तो विजयस्तवै
"Whoever enters this city surely ceases to be human. We are pleased with you, O hero; your victory is sufficient."
न चात्र किञ्चिज्जेतव्यमर्जुनात्र प्रदृश्यते। उत्तराः कुरुवो ह्येते नात्र युद्धं प्रवर्तते
"There is nothing here for you to conquer, Arjuna, that can be seen. These are the northern Kurus; here, no battle takes place."
प्रविष्टोऽपि हि कौन्तेय नेह द्रक्ष्यसि किञ्चन। न हि मानुषदेहेन शक्यमत्राभिवीक्षितुम्
"Even if you enter, son of Kunti, you will see nothing here, for with a human body it is not possible to perceive this place."
अथेह पुरुषव्याघ्र किञ्चिदन्यच्चिकीर्षसि। तत्प्रब्रूहि करिष्यामो वचनात्तव भारत
"But if, O tiger among men, you wish to accomplish something else here, tell us that, O Bhārata, and we will do it at your word."
ततस्तानब्रवीद्राजन्नर्जुनः प्रहसन्निव। पार्थिवत्वं चिकीर्षामि धर्मराजस्य धीमतः
Then Arjuna, as if smiling, spoke to them, "I seek the sovereignty for the wise king Yudhiṣṭhira."
न प्रवेक्ष्यामि वो देशं विरुद्धं यदि मानुषैः। युधिष्ठिराय यत्किञ्चित्करपण्यं प्रदीयताम्
"I will not enter your region if it is forbidden to humans. Let some tribute be given to Yudhiṣṭhira, whatever it may be."
नो चेत्कृष्णेन सहितो योधयिष्यामि सायकैः'। ततो दिव्यानि वस्त्राणि दिव्यान्याभरणानि च। क्षौमाजिनानि दिव्यानि तस्य ते प्रददुः करम्
"Otherwise, together with Kṛṣṇa, I will fight with arrows." Then they gave him divine garments, divine ornaments, and divine silken and antelope-skin garments as tribute.
एवं स पुरुषव्याघ्रो विजित्य दिशमुत्तराम्। सङ्ग्रामान्सुबहून्कृत्वा क्षत्रियैर्दस्युभिस्तथा
Thus, that tiger among men, having conquered the northern direction and fought many battles with both kṣatriyas and robbers,
स विनिर्जित्य राज्ञस्तान्करे च विनिवेश्य तु। धनान्यादाय सर्वेभ्यो रत्नानि विविधानि च
Having subdued those kings and received tribute, he took all their wealth and various kinds of jewels.
हयांस्तित्तिरिकल्माषाञ्शुकपत्रनिभानपि। मयूरसदृशान्यान्सर्वाननिलरंहसः
He took horses, some speckled, some dark, some shining like silk cloth, and others resembling peacocks, all swift as the wind.
वृतः सुमहता राजन्बलेन चतुरङ्गिणा। आजगाम पुनर्वीरः शक्रप्रस्थं पुरोत्तमम्
Surrounded by a great fourfold army, the heroic one returned again to the foremost city, Śakraprastha.
